Redman buying fireworks (as seen on the cover of the NYTimes)
fireworks

"The fireworks industry generated $952 million in sales in 2010, a record, according to the American Pyrotechnics Association, and all signs point to big numbers in 2011 as well. Sales to consumers account for roughly two-thirds of the total.

Only four states continue to ban firework sales: New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Delaware. Julie L. Heckman, executive director of the American Pyrotechnics Association, a trade group, said that a decade ago, sales were permitted in only about half the states. Several, including New Hampshire and Kentucky, have loosened restrictions to allow merchants to sell a wider variety, she said.

One of the main reasons bans are being lifted is that residents can simply drive to the next town, or state, to buy fireworks." [NY Times]

This is just so so sad. Remember when Sonic Youth played a free show? And the New Pornographers? Even Connor Oberst was better than NOTHING!

Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2011 2:13 AM

Come on, this ain't Christmas. Why aren't there any good shows?

Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2011 2:25 AM

That's a damn good point, 12:13...I noticed that the free shows this summer are a fraction of what they've been in summers past, but somehow didn't register that there used to always be a big free show on the 4th, whether it was something I cared about or not, and this year there ain't shit...I thought this was supposed to be the era of corporate-sponsored rock - c'mon, throw us desirable eyeballs a bone...

Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2011 3:14 AM

That's called.recession in english, kids...
Funny, forth of july free shows are not such an old new york tradition, had started just about five years ago with Stephen Malkmus. But the newbies are complaining already...

Here we are now, entertain us. Waaaaah!

Put some money in a fricken' jukebox and get hammered. That's what us kids used to do when there were no stinkin' cuatro de Julio freebie shows.

Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2011 11:25 AM

It's so annoying living in a chickenshit nanny state that makes it illegal to buy fireworks.

11:44 needs a solid ass kicking.
America is amazing... And although there are many reasons for this, I will stick to music because this is afterall a music blog.

1. We invented recorded music.
2. We invented Hip Hop.
3. We invented Blues.
4. We invented Jazz.
5. We invented Disco.
6. We invented Techno.
7. We invented Country.
8. We invented Punk.
9. We invented Bluegrass.
10. We invented ROCK AND ROLL!

11:44 is probably a Frenchman jealous that his small endowment doesn't measure up to his American counterparts.

Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2011 4:45 PM

4:39: It should help to discern that most of those really were invented by blacks.

Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2011 5:04 PM

"4:39: It should help to discern that most of those really were invented by blacks."

And blacks aren't really Americans or something. Fucktard.

Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2011 5:56 PM

British girls invented frumpiness!

Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2011 6:22 PM

The Brits invented Punk.

^you mean like vampire weekend and akron/famehly?

Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2011 9:29 PM

4:39: "We?"
Also, not to diminish American achievements in music, but just take it down a notch - every one of those things was built on the influence of something else that WASN'T invented here, like the drums and the guitar.

Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2011 10:05 PM

>> "like the drums and the guitar."

well, actually, i do like drum, guitar ... and bass! that's right, billyburgers. go check out the guitar, drum 'n' bass record from derek motherfucking bailey and dj ninj. it'll blow yo mind.

Either Iggy or Ramones invented punk, depending upon which authoritative source you ask.

Pistols and Clash were pretty killer, but fuck them imperial wankers. Here in 'Merica we don't need no stinkin' queen / king.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2011 7:46 AM

I always thought Johnny Cash invented punk.

This really shows how America really wants freedom.. This celebration is one of the highlights in the lives of an American. We really should celebrate this event.

Posted by Joe Lund | July 5, 2011 8:08 AM

OH! This is really great.. American people should follow this guy.. He is someone that America should be proud of.. Go America...

Posted by life insurance companies | July 5, 2011 8:28 AM

Aside from the great music WE created, America is great for all the stupid things we take for granted. Spend some time abroad, and you'll know what I mean. You don't have to be a gun-totin', God-fearin', red-state-livin' Conservative to love this country. Be proud of it, or just move the eff to Canada.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2011 9:51 AM

"And blacks aren't really Americans or something. Fucktard."

I'm saying most of those music groups (at least the blueprint of them) were mostly started by black artists. I was merely pointing out specifics. I don't think I implied that blacks couldn't be Americans. But hey, you live in your own world it seems.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2011 9:53 AM

Blacks did not invent hip hop. It's a fact.

Posted by mouthbreather77 | July 5, 2011 10:08 AM

mouthbreather77 did not invent halitosis either, but he did make it an artform

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2011 11:06 AM

> The Brits invented Punk.

LOL

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2011 11:24 AM

"Blacks did not invent hip hop. It's a fact."

You're right, the juggal- I mean Asians did.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2011 11:49 AM

11:44 here. the point is that we could have invented 10 times the amount of great music we did and it would still not even begin to offset the great atrocities we have committed to this world.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2011 9:07 PM

What great atrocities are you referring to? I personally can't think of any.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2011 9:33 PM

"11:44 here. the point is that we could have invented 10 times the amount of great music we did and it would still not even begin to offset the great atrocities we have committed to this world."

You truly are a fucking moron.
