Today is a Manhattanhenge

Ska-turned-prog rockers RX Bandits are currently on their last ever tour. According to an interview with Playmaker, RX Bandits are not breaking up, they're just doing their last tour. RX Bandits hit the scene in the mid-to-late '90s playing pretty standard poppy ska punk. By 2003's The Resignation, the Bandits showed signs of experimenting outside of the realm of the genre and have since released 2 more progressive albums and have shared significant members with far-out experimental rockers The Sound of Animals Fighting. Catch them in NYC tonight (7/12) and Wednesday (7/13) at Irving Plaza with Maps & Atlases. Check out the latter's recent video for "Solid Ground" below. - Andrew Sacher

Old 97s and Robert Ellis play The Stone Pony in Asbury Park tonight (7/12) and then arrive in Brooklyn for shows at The Bell House on July 13 and 14. The tenth person to email BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (subject: Old 97s) will win a pair of tickets to the Wednesday night show at The Bell House (7/13) and access to soundcheck. Include your first and last name in the email, and check our facebook for more chances to win the same prize (we're giving away 5 pairs total actually). Check out a video of the Old 97's performing "State of Texas" in Texas last month, below...

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2011 2:13 PM

I ask this in all seriousness, not as a BV meme.

Does anyone know set times for Animal Collective? is there an opening band? Will the Show actually start at, or close to, 6:30?

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2011 2:19 PM

I'm pretty sure there are 2 openers, one of them being Black Dice (!!!). But I don't know the set times yet. Hopefully BD is second and not first (I'm arriving a little late tonight).

Also, will alcohol be sold there? I know it said "no alcohol, blah, blah, blah....", but did that mean no BYOB?

"Celebrate Brooklyn tweeted: gates @ 530. DJ set @ 630 followed by Black Dice, Animal Collective and then Daft Punk @ 1030."

Gay.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2011 2:37 PM

Daft Punk wouldn't associate with you hippie hipsters an co crowd.

They're better than that.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2011 2:40 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2011 2:52 PM

In twist on the "play classic albums in their entirety" trend, tonight Animal Collective is going to put their unique spin on Sam Cooke's "Live at the Harlem Square Club".

You'll be twisting the night away with Panda Bear, for sure!

Posted by Señor | July 12, 2011 2:52 PM

I couldn't care less for RX Bandits or their last tour, but Maps & Atlases are legit - how did I miss this?

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2011 2:55 PM

Señor: Too bad the Apollo couldn't book them that one time. Nevertheless, this'll be a great night. I can't wait to twist!

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2011 2:57 PM

Just left Animal Collective show early, so bad...

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2011 10:06 PM

Played too much new stuff, right? You people are such idiots. Sorry it wasn't a jukebox full of your favorite hits.

Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2011 12:41 AM

Show was awesome, new album is going to be so oily. Only criticism is that Panda Bear had a very meek presence, but his song in the encore was a highlight of the set.

Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2011 1:50 AM

It was a $40 benefit concert with sloppy new songs. BULLSHIT. It was clear that Animal Collective was very comfortable with their older material. This new indy-quasi Grateful Dead stuff they were trying to pull was just poorly done and should have stayed on the shelf until they had rehearsed it more.

Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2011 2:03 AM

you should have gone to bill callahan instead

Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2011 2:05 AM

"Show was awesome, new album is going to be so oily. Only criticism is that Panda Bear had a very meek presence, but his song in the encore was a highlight of the set."

I think he probably wanted to step back a bit, since he did his solo show just recently.

Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2011 9:55 AM

The 2009 shows were definitely better (even though I kinda knew this going in - it'd be tough to top those 2). Last night's show wasn't bad though, but the new songs will need some time to sink in.

Nothing like making your Tuesday feel like a weekend!

Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2011 9:59 AM

new stuff sounded great. kinda glad they didn't do too much stuff from MPP

Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2011 10:18 AM

Hahahaha .... Animal Collective is shit music, and all y'all hipsters getting bummed out just made my morning. Better than finding a $20 on the ground. hahahahahahaha

Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2011 10:35 AM

I think it was pretty well-known that they were going to be doing new material, so you should have either stayed home or stop complaining.

Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2011 10:52 AM

This show was so much better than 2009

Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2011 1:01 PM

^^ and was awesome
