"Any sort of mention of Wu Lyf has to explain their anti-publicity and DIY stance. Now, they are slowly revealing themselves. At Friday's show, Ellery Roberts introduced the band. Although his thick Northern England accent was hard to understand. They even did a Radio 1 session last week before they arrived in New York." [Music Snobbery]WU LYF, after making their US debut in NYC in April, returned and played two sold out shows this past weekend with Bass Drum of Death. The first was at Mercury Lounge on Friday (7/22) and then Knitting Factory on Saturday (7/23). The intense and shirtless headlining band showcased material from their recently released Go Tell Fire to the Mountain.
"The ballyhooed debut album from WU LYF (pronounced "woo life" and an acronym for World Unite! Lucifer Youth Foundation) was self-produced and recorded in an abandoned church and if this is already too "indie" of a narrative for you, let me just quickly re-iterate that the record is really, really good." [Potholes in My Blog]Pictures and videos from Mercury Lounge continue below....

awesome show.

I was at Mercury Lounge and hype or not, they backed it up, and put on a great show. I feel fortunate to have seen them in that type of venue, because they will be playing stadiums at some point regardless of what the cynics want to believe.
The flip side, is that they can probably stand to be a little more humble. They are not easy guys to root for given the marketing nonsense, and their stand-offish manner. They are the only band that I have seen at Mercury Lounge, who don't mingle with the fans and weren't even selling T-Shirts up front.

Saw them at Mercury Lounge. Ba-ba-boring. So god damned unoriginal. They should be paying royalties to all the bands they're biting off.

I agree with 11:09 that they make themselves hard to like. Such tools... I mean, you should at least be required to show visible perspiration prior to removing your shirt.
However, I do enjoy the album and I thought they put on a good show.

Saw them at Knitting Factory. That venue has the absolute worst sound... all I could hear were symbols the entire show.

Girly man.

Gimmick after gimmick after gimmick. They could prob get a good job in marketing though.

the hard to like/root for them comments are on point. i had a hard time with that at knitting factory. their music is really strong but also a little overblown/pretentious to begin with so while i try not to focus on image, arrogance of band, etc. it's hard not to have it effect my enjoying a band like this. i kinda felt they were phonies. still, i do think the album is one of the best of the year.

Believe it or don't shit like that does get in the way of the music.

11:33 play the symbols, reads Encyclopedia Brown, but has low SAT scores, and lives in Athens.

How anyone could give their album a good review is beyond me. It's easily one of the worst debuts of all time. Sub par music, and a horrendously godawful singer. All the songs sound the same, boring energy, no melody, no hooks, nothing memorable or standout. This album and this band will be forgotten in a few years. Maybe less.
