"The VMAs unite us as a people, a shitty, shitty people. #VMAs" - Dave Hill

Tyler's mom & Wavves @ the Video Music Awards (via Hipster Runoff)
Tyler

Bon Iver (Justin Vernon) has posted his thoughts on last night's VMAs. This is what he said:

"there are great moments in awards shows. bruno mars sounded really good doing 'valerie' for amy winehouse. i don't think anyone is bummed that adele is killing everything. her voice was real and focused when i went thru and watched highlights from tonight. kanye and jay z are always murdering. beyonce is pregnant. yes this is awesome as shit, culturally speaking. but can i just ask, the reader, us, we ... as non-rhetorically as possible: don't we seem dumb? didn't MTV lose the fight against themselves? Didn't Rock'n'Roll STOP? Why are the lights so bright? isn't our talent as artists enough? Why do we try SO hard? Does a moonman mean what it did back then? Should we feel pumped when we get one? Should our mom's cry? I am not even thinking about it that hard. I will close my eyes in 90 seconds and have total peace... But, seriously. Why are we waving around so much? Why do we NEED this shit so bad? Why don't we just have MUSIC? DO music? soul? I don't know. I don't mean to criticize. Anyone. Actually. Except for MTV. You might have had a very large opportunity to be stabilize your self as a global presence of culture and art about 15 years ago and you fucked the dog. Sorry. Im with my girls on this one. Its becoming increasingly clear as I think about it more and more, that the dollars, if they ARE apart of why you are doing something... they are apart of why you are doing something. that's fucked to me. that's the absence of spirit, glue, fabric of what makes us a person. it distracts us from what we could be doing: WORK. on EARTH. Better say this: Forget what I say. If you even read this, you'll probably say to yourself, who is this ass saying shit? It doesn't matter what i say. it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter. But this one last thought: What would Bill Hicks say?"
- JV
If you missed the show, or didn't read about it already, Odd Future's Tyler, The Creator won Best New Artist, Adele (as Justin points out) is a good singer, (so is) Beyonce (but more impotantly, she) is pregnant, Lady Gaga does a great Ralph Macchio, and Justin Bieber loves God and Jesus....

MTV is yet another symbol of the Boomer legacy.
Step 1. Get a neat idea that's ahead of its time
Step 2. Get real big, grandiose, and hooked on $$$.
Step 3. Do what it takes to keep those gold chains flowing.
Step 4. Become something you never imagined, for the worse.
Step 5. Whine.

Your legacy is comical.

Didn't know JV got cable in his cabin in the woods.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 6:15 PM

He's absolutely right.
The pompous spectacle is a parody of itself.
as is MTV.

Someone needs to tell JV how to differentiate between a part and apart.

When will Bon Iver be eligible for "Best New Artist?" On his fourth album? When he signs to a major?

That Tyler guys has to be the one of the least articulate people I have ever heard speak. I'm embarrassed for him. You can tell he's not really the sharpest tool in the shed.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 7:12 PM

lol bon who?

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 7:13 PM

Id be embarrased if I won a VMA. Tyler is actually perfect for this. Lame and LAME.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 7:41 PM

Bill Hicks would never guest on a Kanye west album, dude. And if you're so in love with Jay Z and Adele and Beyonce, what is is you dont like about MTV? Dont you realize these are all the same entities?

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 7:49 PM

little dude doesn't seem to know his religion very well. back in my day, god and jesus (and the holy spirit) were a three-in-one deal.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 7:55 PM

What the hell is he complaining about? MTV is shit? No fucking kidding, it has been for a long time.

This guy rips on MTV but he is Kanye $$$$ West's buddy. GET REAL.

I mean ultimately, all "indie" musicians ultimately have to ironically and snarkily dismiss the VMA's or any MTV related entity because the truth is they are already dismissed their own longed-for idealized glory on MTV as it is. C'mon. Any kid who had dreams of being a "rockstar" when they "grow up" fantasize about their moment kickin' ass on stage at an MTV Awards show with ostentatious fireworks/balloons/confetti/exploding watermelons cascading around us as a further reinforcement of our epic-ness and on stage persona prestige to an equally enthralled and intoxicated, delirious audience. We can shit on the current tenets of MTV all we want, but all of your "indie" rock gods were introduced to you on there once upon a "pre-internet" time - Curt, Eddie, Cornell, oh god, the whole 90's. It's a different age and moral standard now, or so we'd like to delude ourselves. WE have too much INTEGRITY for that sellout money making bullshit!!! Well, who the hell doesn't want to make money doing what they love? Who the hell doesn't want to perform for a potential new fanbase of millions of people who's lives you can change with your art. If you say you make music, pay to produce and album, try to get gigs to play just for "yourself", you're full of shit, or a moron with too much time and money you could give to me or some other charity. May as well just be indifferent to it all, because any aggressive opinion is just a vent for jealousy. And the only reason the proverbial authentic they won't be seen on MTV is because they won't be asked to be on MTV. It's not suppose to be fair or based on talent and who deserves what, it just is. "Live and let live"...

6:30 Santa built "the starts" in his magical workshop.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 8:16 PM

Even if MTV just represents vapid mindless frivolity, it would be fun for any musician to be on there and the focal point and stared at and appreciated by your peers at least once. We all know you won't receive anything redeeming on any intellectual level. Just for the bucket-list experience, not the "I"m finally respected as an artist level" - there is a difference, simultaneously being in on AND appreciating the joke. BLEEEEEEHHHHHHHH... Then go to VH1 for your behind the music episode.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 8:29 PM

The fact that you list Curt (sic) Cobain, Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell as 90s indie rock gods proves you either A) too young to know that MTV sucks now or B) know very little about music

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 8:29 PM

Justin Vernon went into a cabin and ate only cracker jacks, and came out a cracker jack performer.

Tyler went into the projects and ate only cracker jacks (and grape drink), and came out clown shit.

^- My opinion as well... Those artists were used as mega conglomerate "catch all" examples of musicians that on SOME level are respected, mass known, AND seen on MTV at a pivotal point in their careers... Yeah, there's too many good musicians too list, that was just the most accessible, broadest examples relevant to the channel at some point. No one cares about being on some artistic level with anyone being played on the channel now, it's just the act of being there and doing it... Like going to Amsterdam... you want to say you went there at some point in your life, but it doesn't mean you have to bang all of the prostitutes while you're and because you're there. Ugh, always someone with the "you're musically ignorant" cliche.... it's about another venue to perform and make new fans, nothing else. Any culturally, the ultimate "I made it as big as I can ever make it" watermark in your life. That's how it is, and will be for a long time.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 8:41 PM

I have a serious question. Do you think that Tyler the Creator calls his mom "nigger"? That would reveal if that shit is real or if he's just frontin'. 'Cause we all really need another frontin' black man rousing the rabble.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 8:49 PM

Vernon should try watching the Grammys, now that's a good award show where true artistry is recognized!

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 8:49 PM

lol people writing paragraphs about indie cred as if anyone actually cares about vma's lol lol

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 8:50 PM

ha some folk musician in the middle of his fifteen minutes is all butthurt because he has figured out that mtv programs to idiots. breaking news Donovan, TV content exists to sell advertising space and subscription services. It aims to bee right in the middle of the majority. It's not SUPPOSED to be good.

who got beyonce pregnant?

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 9:02 PM

The Wire was great.
Rescue Me is great.
Breaking Bad is great.
Deadwood was great.
Weeds has moments of greatness.
Mad Men is great.
Fringe is great.

TV can be great. I think you mean the "Reality TV" thing, including the sham of awards shows, are the foolishness.

Grr, people who write songs for a living should know to say "a part," and not "apart."

Posted by grammarnazi | August 30, 2011 1:32 AM

Does no one find it troubling that adults that they know actually sit down to watch the VMAs on a Sunday night. Like actually plan to watch it? And Justin Vernon did, too? What the fuck? Most of my friends live in New York City, and I presumed that they did so as to enjoy something that isn't total motherfucking BULLSHIT.

Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2011 8:58 AM

i don't know why everyone jumped to the conclusion that beyonce is pregnant. i think it's pretty clear she just ate twelve racks of ribs.

Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2011 9:09 AM

lol, "does a moonman mean what it did back then?" as a matter of fact yes it does mr. iver. it still means "thanks for being profitable."

Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2011 9:21 AM

An award from a TV channel that has "music" in it's name and plays none of.

Makes perfect sense. Welcome to Barry Obama's America. The 2 Minutes of Hate will begin at noon today. And remember .... Big Brother is watching you.

Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2011 9:41 AM

if i was invited to the vmas i would go. if i was 19 yrs old and won a vma id be pretty psyched. instead im commenting on bv from my midlevel corp job. i think tyler wins.

Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2011 10:03 AM

Do you think Wavves Delonte West'd her?

Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2011 10:19 AM

I love how everyone wants to keep Tyler stuck at 19 years old for eternity to somehow justify his CRAZY behavior. He's 21.

Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2011 10:48 AM

To quote the inexorable grammy-winner Win Butler, "MTV, what have you done to me?"

Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2011 10:55 AM

Says the dude currently posted all over the subways on a Bushmills ad.

Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2011 11:03 AM

Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2011 11:11 AM
