Cro-Mags

Cro-Mags headlined a hot, sweaty, and rain-drenched House of Vans with a supporting cast of Fucked Up, Screaming Females, and Pissed Jeans on Friday night (7/29). Doors to the venue opened at 7PM as the masses in line (the line touched the neighboring They Might Be Giants line down the block) were getting drenched in the downpour. Those entering were wringing out their shirts in the ultra-humid and wet warehouse.

Pissed Jeans opened the show with authority, pounding out favorites like "False Jesii pt 2" while the "moshing" crowd fell victim to the slick sheen of water on the venue floor; I saw my share of slips in mid-mosh. After a crew mopped the floors (seriously), Screaming Females followed with an energetic set that got the crowds back moving, though nothing comparable to what was to come.

There were a lot of discussion/rumors regarding who would be the headliner for the show, partially due to the crowd looking like they skewed on the Fucked Up side and partially due to the House of Vans site listing "Cro-Mags / Fucked Up" in the top billing spot. Ends up it was Fucked Up who supported. Damian & co riled up the sweat-drenched crowd indoors & outdoors, on stage & off, causing crowdsurfing and singalongs, though clearly confusing the security guards ("I'm OK, dont worry about it"). Excellent set.

Cro-Mags was the main event though, and the band covered material from their classic Age of Quarrel ("Show You No Mercy", 'We Gotta Know") in addition to covers by Bad Brains ("Attitude") while the crowd went apeshit. Stage dives off of the PA, crowdsurfing, floor-punching, and more were all in abundance, as the Cro-Mags gave an energetic set despite the barrier between the band and crowd (unfortunate for a Cro-Mags show in my opinion).

Great night. Poured like hell when most of us were waiting (I think 10% of the people on line actually had umbrellas), so I was soaked like a mofo.

Really enjoyed Fucked up and the Cro-Mags (who I'd never seen before). After Fucked up played, Damian was shaking hands and hugging the fans. I went up to him, shook his hand, told him he was the Canadian Billy Milano. He took it as a big compliment (he told me he even met in in Houston I think - where Billy lives) and thanked me. Very cool experience.

I wound up commuting home with a milk carton of water, forgetting how I wound up with it in the first place. Crazy night!

"There were a lot of discussion/rumors regarding who would be the headliner for the show."

Thankfully for Fucked Up, they played before Cro-Mags. They would have looked even weaker if they tried to follow the Cro-Mags. Crappy sound for FU.

Haters are just fools, because on this day in music Fucked Up OWNS NYC

Seriously, that scrawny security guard was lucky he didn't get punched in the face. You don't try to arm-lock someone who fell into the security barrier area after you failed to protect them from falling over (or as they were doing, punching crowdsurfers and pushing people to the floor). That guy was lucky he didn't get knocked out.

Btw thanks to all who helped me find my phone, I appreciate it.

Don't mean to be ignorant, but what exactly is floor punching, and why is it fun?

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2011 12:54 PM

I don't know this band "screaming females" but I had a serious screaming female situation the other night... Let me explain:
So I was down in TriBeCa at an art show gently stroking my beard and discussing things like negative space compositions and the proper usage of color tones when I noticed this fine looking girl sipping her Pinot noir by the hummus platter. I strolled on over to her And things were going really well as we used our fancy voices to speak about this art show. I was rather hungry, so I reached for a baby carrot and dipped it into the hummus. (it was a delicious blend with pine nuts and capers on top) but the carrot was rather large so I double dipped back into the platter. That's when the evening took a turn... That female started screaming!

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2011 12:58 PM

never double dip your carrot son. the moose out front should have told you that.

Cro-mags definitely had the largest crowd...

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2011 2:28 PM

Unlikely to happen, but I'd love to see VOD and Converge on the same bill for a HOV show. That would rule.

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2011 2:33 PM

Here 2:33, I fixed it for ya:

"Unlikely to happen, but I'd love to get VD from Converge on the same night as my HIV shows. That would rule."

You people dont deserve the Cro-Mags.They did you all a favor.

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2011 3:17 PM

""Here 2:33, this is my story:

"Likely to happen, I'd love to to the token AIDS strut for the fellow trendies who will get VOD'd and Converged in theys anusholes. That would rule.""

Interesting behavior 3:03, but it wouldn't be in good taste.

Cro-Mags showed Fucked Up how it's done. It takes more than a screaming fat guy without a shirt to be considered punk rock. They had more energy, better sound and overall better musicians.

Why did Fucked Up have three guitarists? Cro-Mags had one and sounded way better. The two guitarists on both ends were dead weight.
