Last here for this year's popfest, Fan Modine (aka North Carolina resident Gordon Zacharias) is back in town this month for two performances of gorgeous orch-pop: there's a free show this Sunday (8/7) at the Ace Hotel with Sam Owens, and then Wednesday, August 17 at The Rock Shop with April March and Hotel Lights (the new band from Darren Jesse of Ben Folds Five).
At the top of this post you can download two tracks from Fan Modine's new album, Gratitude the Shipper, Zacharais' first in six years. If you like The Pernice Brothers, The Divine Comedy, The Left Banke, this album's for you. It's also got a slew of talent on it. Chris Stamey of the dB's produced, and features NC legend Mitch Easter, plus members of Polvo and the Essex Green.
Both NYC performances are full band shows, so hopefully much of Gratitude the Shipper's (and previous albums, like 2004's Homeland) lush arrangements will be represented live.

I've got another riddle for you .....

I used to be in a band. I got too obsessed in the scene. Was it alcholism, heroin use, or exhaustion- no one will ever know. I got too caught up in Chillwave- it overwhelmed me like a drug left me feeling good and powerless. I would wake up everymorning for brunchwave- I didn't know it then but I was slowly becoming addicted. I started off with chillwave, brunchwave, dark wave, withouse, and then my final straw was Orch Pop. I just couldn't handle it anymore. Pick any shitty song and read this to its tune.

Hotel Lights has been around for about 6 years, so its not Darren's "new" band.

I wanted to see exotic Vietnam... the crown jewel of Southeast Asia. I wanted to meet interesting and stimulating people of an ancient culture... and kill them.

gratitude for the shipper is a solid album. if you check this website to find good music versus using it to showcase mental and creative shortcomings, give it a listen. solid songwriting, nice arrangements that range from simple to complex and lovely melodies, you can tell it's produced and performed by experienced and talented musicians. won't be my favorite album of the year, but after several listens there are still pleasant surprises.
okay, back to the comments by people still living in the same bedroom they grew up in who obviously don't get enough attention from their parents.
