Gibson

"The Federal Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. has suggested that the use of wood from India that is not finished by Indian workers is illegal, not because of U.S. law, but because it is the Justice Department's interpretation of a law in India. (If the same wood from the same tree was finished by Indian workers, the material would be legal.) This action was taken without the support and consent of the government in India.

On August 24, 2011, around 8:45 a.m. CDT, agents for the federal government executed four search warrants on Gibson's facilities in Nashville and Memphis and seized several pallets of wood, electronic files and guitars. Gibson had to cease its manufacturing operations and send workers home for the day, while armed agents executed the search warrants. Gibson has fully cooperated with the execution of the search warrants." [Gibson]"

Gibson Guitar Chairman and CEO Henry Juszkiewicz is outraged at government. Listen to an audio interview with him below...

Why do I get the feeling that's going to be the most lucid comment in this thread

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 1:25 PM

"String" em up! They "Wood" do that! Something about this story strikes a "Chord" with me. But don't "fret" there are still other quality guitars out there. I'm going to stick out my 'neck" and nit"pick". Maybe with a better undertstanding we can build a "bridge" and understand the issues with India? Maybe then we will chang our "tune"?

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 1:28 PM

I will never vote for this jackass ever again. How about fixing the economy?!?!? Remember the economy?

Hope and change? Keep the change.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 1:32 PM

Vote Republican

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 1:33 PM

So, wood from India that is not finished by Indians that is brought to USA for commerce internationally is illegal, but Mexican that are living and working here illegally and availing themselves of American social services, not paying taxes, and bringing a drug war with them is OK?

I am sad and disgusted to live in what this president has made this country into.

Countdown to re-election manufactured domestic terrorism scare in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ....

To rant the obvious, this is incredibly stupid.

Posted by Chad | August 29, 2011 1:40 PM

I play and like Gibson guitars, but the best ones are the RI's which cost +$4k. Still I do not find any merit to this government harassment. I'll buy the best guitar, regardless of who touched the wood when it cam out of the mill.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 1:42 PM

I'm going to live long enough to take a nice healthy piss on Eric Holder's grave.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 1:43 PM

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 1:46 PM

people.... I doubt Obama had any personal hand in this. Save that shit for another thread.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 1:47 PM

Just like all the Republican TeaParty maniacs have been telling us - Barack Obama hates white people and their guitar music. Obviously amIright?

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 1:48 PM

Remember Obama dropped all charges against black panther thugs armed with clubs blocking polling places? That's okay, I'm sure their clubs were made with legally harvested wood.

Posted by Mustang | August 29, 2011 1:52 PM

Just hire some Indians to finish them.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 1:55 PM

1:47 - you need to buy a clue.

#1 Obama is a total micro-manager. He showed that with his intervention in a Cambridge police dispute with a racist professor and a cop. He had to commit out troops to a 3rd war, when he went around promising to get us out of the other 2 (which is kind of slow in coming, yeah?). Hell, he even had to have his photo op this very weekend, looking important doing nothing at the Hurricane Weather Blah-Blah Center. No, this idiot knows about all the Alinsky strong arm policies that his administration is responsible for.

#2 - even on the outside chance that he did not know about this (which he absolutely did), HE IS STILL RESPONSIBLE FOR IT! Remember all the shit that you crazy Liberal conspiracy fools have thrown at Reagan, Bush 43, Bush 43, Giuliani, Pataki, etc. etc. etc. from like THE BEGINNING OF TIME? Nah, clearly this is a man that does not accept responsibility but will feel it's crushing weight in November 2012. Then, and only then, will this bullying and skullduggery end and we can start to go about fixing all the damage.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 1:57 PM

It's fascinating that so many Flat Earthers read BV. I guess it's understandable - if Mommy and Daddy have the dirty old money and sign the checks, Baby should adopt their politics.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 1:57 PM

What is a Flat Earther?

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 1:59 PM

Now this I don't understand. Isn't it in the country's best interest to have American workers finishing the wood right here in the US?

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 2:00 PM

1:57

When you were writing that, how many times did you type "nigge" and then start furiously backspacing?

Take your douchey paranoia and race panic somewhere else, loon.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 2:02 PM

We shouldn't have any "reservations" about having Indians finishing the wood in America. lets "Sikh" them out. "Sari" I Couldn't resist!

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 2:03 PM

Gee, why am I not surprised that the way the Gibson people tell this story, the Feds look completely unreasonable?

Posted by Dorkus Maximus | August 29, 2011 2:04 PM

1:57, that's a classic liberal argument. Why is it bad to adopt your parent's beliefs? Isn't it usually the case that the older you get, the more experienced you become? So wouldn't it stand to reason that people who have been through far more would have a better understanding of the way the world works? What's the common saying? Born a liberal die a conservative? Maybe if those 40 and under listened a little closer, they could've seen this abomination of a presidency coming from a million miles away....

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 2:05 PM

2:02 - How dare you project your own racism and xenophobia onto me. No, you poor deluded fool, you will own your own shit. Mkay?

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 2:06 PM

2:06

You caught me! I defend Obama precisely BECAUSE I'm so racist. It really throws people off my scent! Not you, though, you little bloodhound.

You're just adorable.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 2:11 PM

whoa, rabid right-wing mouth-frothing on bv? who knew. there is no limit to the stupid on this site. i am consistently impressed by it.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 2:16 PM

You people are gettinged "amped"! This may turn out to be a really "whammy". I don't know what you "bass" your arguments on? Well I guess you have a good "case"

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 2:20 PM

if BV can't keep the tea-baggers (1:32, 1:33, 1:37, 1:39, 1:43, 1:46, 1:52, 1:57, 2:05, etc.) off this site, then it's best us normal people leave it in droves.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 2:21 PM

conservatives have always been and always will be the enemy of reason.

this site started going downhill around the time bv became fascinated by metal.

any good music blogs anyone?

Posted by Debbie Gibson | August 29, 2011 2:31 PM

Nice declarative, flame baiting comment 2:24. Keep telling yourself that you are reasonable and not a troll.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 2:31 PM

Actually, 2:11, that seems to be a sizable argument for why Obama was elected. White Guilt. The man wasn't really that qualified for the job, but because of his race, he was largely supported and touted to be great than he is.

And the problem is, no Republican can ever call him out because, like we saw when Rush Limbaugh said D McNab was overrated because he was black, the backlash is insane and unreasonable.

Truth is when choosing a president race SHOULDN'T be part of the equation, but with Obama it certainly was.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 2:37 PM

2:02 / 2:11 - you don't even see the hypocrisy of your argument. The white man making any questioning of your president's beliefs or actions as "racist" because you believe that it will intimidate your opponent into giving up. Sorry Charlie, "separate but equal" died a long time ago, and I'm sorry that your liberal teachers tricked you with their lies. You support the people that you fear, and in so doing your "enlightened, rational" actions are really whimpy and feckless. A true rational person would not see the color of the person but would judge his actions, his character, his beliefs. Shame on you for bringing race into this! You have proved yourself to be the racist after all.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 2:44 PM

besides the tea-baggers, apparently the racists (2:37) have infiltrated this "music" blog.

have you no shame, bv? why do you allow these types of comments? please don't give me that nonsense about freedom of speech.

i LONG for the day when we have a true socialist society - LIKE CUBA, yes CUBA - and there is only ONE newspaper.

that's a sure way to keep the right-wing conservative whack jobs out of the main stream.

of course, che DID have his firing squads too.
just sayin'.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 2:44 PM

AMEN 2:44. A true scholar.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 2:46 PM

How was 2:37's argument racist? He wasn't saying he thought any specific race shouldn't be respected, just that race shouldn't have any play considering a candidate.

That sounds like the antithesis of racism....

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 2:53 PM

Haha. You poor children want to be protected from the big bad conservatives?

Go find another music blog, I'm sure you'll notice conservatism popping up everywhere. It's not just BV.

Pop your head out of the bubble you live in for a few minutes and look around.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 2:57 PM

2:44 - do us all a favor and move to Cuba. Your dream will never come true ... not here, comrade. Go fuck off you scumbag.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 2:58 PM

lol someone still believes in socialism lol i think we should all hold hands and sing really loud and maybe we can stop this rain lol

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 2:59 PM

Glad to see so many conservatives on here. Are you guys recent converts or long-timers? Hoping some of you are recent. That bodes well for next year.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 3:01 PM

So 2:37... your argument is based on the opinion that John McCain/Sarah Palin would have been a better choice? And because Obama was black, Americans chose him instead?
yeah... that makes sense.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 3:02 PM

Honestly, 3:02, I think MOST people would've done a better job than the socialist Obama. He WANTS the economy to tank. Free economy goes down, Obama power goes up -- any 8th grade history student knows that.

When Obama gets more power, government expands, jobs go down, and more people go under the gvt's wing. Socialism ensues.

And that's a very bad thing. Forget about all the great scientific breakthroughs out there. Forget about technology, and forget about the great standard of life in the US.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 3:09 PM

This sounds a bit sketchy. It sounds like Gibson isn't telling the whole story.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 3:09 PM

If you still support Obama you obviously don't think for yourself.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 3:10 PM

"Why is it bad to adopt your parent's beliefs?"

It isn't, unless they're greedy, hateful, anti-science creeps.

I don't like "tone" this thread has taken. While I know "shredding" your fellow commenters can be fun, it would be much more productive if we could "pick up" where the "body" of the article left off and not resort to such blatant "distortion" of facts and figures.

You "knobs."

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 3:30 PM

India and Madagascar have issued export bans of unfinished rosewood 6mm or thicker, due to over-exploitation of the resource. Gibson worked to get around the ban by "mis"-labeling the wood as veneer, and by having the product shipped to a third party. A Bush administration amendment to the Lacey Act makes providing such false information a criminal offense. So, Gibson has been caught breaking the law, and is trying to get out of it by pulling a political stunt. Shame on them!

Posted by Rbee | August 29, 2011 3:31 PM

I love how Liberals run around singing about how they are so "inclusive", and yet the most minor disagreement with their dodgy philosophy and they get apoplectic and start throwing tantrums. Sit down and shut up, and learn how to live in the world with people you don't agree with. THEN you might learn how to really be inclusive.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 3:33 PM

Good rosewood is getting harder to find. What a shame, it is a beautiful tonewood.

"Obama the "socialist"?!?!?! hahahahahahahahaha.........."

Yeah. I guess now that it's hard to conceal what a spectacular imbecile he is, Newsweek will spare us any more "We're all socialists now" cover stories. That's what's great about leftists, their ideology has never failed, it just hasn't been properly implemented yet. The only "real" socialists are the theoretical ones.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 3:53 PM

Please tell me how "dodgy" my "philosophy" is while I "sit down and shut up" so you can tell me how "inclusive" you are. Assholes, all of you. And stupid, what's worse. This country is in sore shape and heading straight down the hole. BV or FOX Nation? Obama or Perry? Not much difference in the end, is there? We're surrounded by idiots and thoroughly fucked either way.

Disagreeing is one thing. There is room in here for disagreement. There is also room in society for those who wish to tear it down. And that space is either found on the discredited fringe where it belongs, or else they will be successful. Unfortunately, the destructive forces of ignorance and greed are simultaneously embraced and propagated by certain powerful interests even as they are embraced by those who would be steamrolled into the middle ages by them. The decline and fall of America has begun, the looting is in full swing. Vote Republican.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 5:02 PM

Watch out 4:50, talk like that and you will be accused of racism. Citrus fruits are great, but not superior to other races of fruit. Better to go with Obama vs. grape drink (sugar, water, purple).

For the record, I would go with the grape drink as well (and I would give the points)

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2011 5:05 PM

5:02 - I know that all the colors and words and everything are really confusing, but if you look at the picture and then look at all of the words underneath the picture, there is a word that's blue and underlined (hang with me now, we're almost there), and if you use your mouse you can put your pointer thingy over that word and click it, and you'll get the source document referenced in all those words under the picture. Now don't get too scared at all the words and no pictures, but it you move the page down by using the sliding bar thingy on the far right of the window, you'll see that the guy in the picture is Henry E. Juszkiewicz, the CEO of Gibson. He makes a lot more money than you because he didn't get high and listen to bad music when he was in high school.

Feel free to stop by again if you have any other questions, OK?

Good think we have Obama who promised to get us out of Iraq and Afghanistan, get rid of Halliburton, and provide the most transparent presidency that America has ever known.

Oh, I'm sorry ... we are not just still in Iraq and Afghanistan but now in Libya too (who did nothing to us, whatsoever), Halliburton still has all the reconstruction and security contracts, and is not transparent, at all. All this while telling us what we should eat and drink, while he and Michelle have hamburgers and smoke Virginia Slims.

Nice try Liberal wankers. You had your chance, we'll take over from here. I'll think for myself, thank you very much.

Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2011 9:18 AM

That anyone at this point would actually defend Obama and his gang is totally beyond me. That Kool Aid must taste real nice. Glad someone is having a fun time these days, while the entire nation is about to grab pitchforks and torches and storm the castle.

Nice to see BVers getting all political and cranky over Gibson guitars. While admittedly classless to play the class card, who but dentists and lawyers can afford the guitars Gibson makes with these woods? They make nice instruments but b-schooled themselves out of relevance to working musicians. I'd rather have a boatload of hummus, but then I'm clown shit. Or something.

"9:35 you cannot be serious, can you? You are going to defend entering another war?"

I hate war. wouldn't it be lovely if we could all sit down and a have a cup of tea or a couple of beers and amicably solve all are problems?
but that's not the way the world works.

Cliches, but true: "live by the sword, etc", "reap what you so", "what comes around, etc", and 'payback's a bitch". Isn't it?

Here's your new learning for today: I never watch FOX News. But you clearly learned to mindlessly attach that label to anyone who disagrees with you somewhere. MSNBC, perhaps? Or was it some dopey leftist website. Free your mind!

You're entitled to your opinions, but not your facts. Republicans destroyed our economy and committed us to two land wars in Asia, and have done nothing but obstruct resolving these issues. It is insane that some people now believe all of our problems are Obama's fault. Time for the tea party backlash.

Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2011 1:12 PM

The dirty secret is Obama is a corporatist Republican tool of the oligarchy, and he has succeeded in moving the middle. Now a right-of-center, social-security-cutting corporate stooge is called the dirtiest of words, a liberal, or even worse, a socialist, marxist, fascist, maoist, a nazi even. Is his slow-motion dismantling of America, paying lip service to labor before signing away another million jobs in another "free trade" agreement, agreeing to every Republican demand as long as he can call it a victory, any better than the scorched earth of a full-blown Republican administration? Maybe it's worse, since the average Democratic voter may yet be hoodwinked into thinking he's on our side, while they steal everything. America will be left a hollow shell either way. Our owners wouldn't have it any other way. They'll take it all and retreat to their private islands. But sure, vote for Ron Paul. If that tickles your pickle.

Peyote gives me visions like that too. That's why I stick to bourbon and beer these days.

Used to be a time that one could have an intelligent discussion with another person, even if they had a different opinion, even about politics. Nowadays, all that is gone. I think that it's from a generation or two of people being raised to think that they are the center of the universe, and that they could not possibly be wrong in their own opinions.

Take this thread. Lots of pandering on both sides. False "facts". Name calling. Dismissive regurgitation on others' thoughts. You all ought to be ashamed of yourself, but you won't because that would imply that you might be wrong and you cannot handle that.

Oh yeah, 5:49, capitalism is bad. It just so happens that capitalism gave you the ability to type that sentence on the internet, on a blog about music. Hmmm....

I don't see a ton of great technology and culture coming out of Cuba now adays. Mostly what i see coming out are people fleeing in droves.

Congressman RuPal (R-TX) doesn't believe in evolution. Therefore, he is disqualified from running anything, including the country, a school and any other public institution.

Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2011 11:02 PM

Evolution isn't exactly relevant to running a country. Paul has a medical degree from Duke which puts him in a different stratosphere of scientific literacy than clowns like Al Gore, John Kerry and the drooling idiot in the White House at present.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2011 12:49 AM

12:49am should really just hang themselves. evolution isn't relative to running a country?

evolution is relative to the very existence of whoever 'runs' the country.

not surprising that the right wing neo-facist religious psychos don't believe in evolution...they haven't evolved from a more primitive existence.

keep bashing barry. you'll have another 4 years to keep practicing your artificial intelligence.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2011 11:09 AM

How does one complete medical school without encountering and understanding the theory of evolution? I had a chemistry teacher in high school who believed the earth was 6000 years old. Of course, he had to teach us that heavy elements were created by collapsing stars over billions of years since the big bang, he had to teach us about radioactive decay and carbon dating. There is intellectual dishonesty in people like this. Smart enough to know better, self-deluded enough to proclaim their ignorance proudly. There's a lot of that in evidence on this thread. Most libertarians are not idiots. But they prefer neat, simple declarations of the problem (government) and the solution (eliminate it). It's lazy, it's dishonest, it's denialism at its finest, but it helps them feel secure and smart and right.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2011 11:27 AM

11:27 - from the socialist who defined the true axis of evil - VERY well put.

Heh. 11:49 (me) is an atheist. I sort of look at people who go through contortions to reconcile their religious faith with the Earth's creation as being immensely different than the loopy Young Earth Creationists who are either profoundly stupid or grotesquely dishonest. Paul would have to elaborate to provide some indication of what separates him from anyone - Obama, long-time attender of a loopy church included - who expresses any religious faith at all.

Any kind of religious conviction is inherently anti-rational. Not unlike continual assertions that Obama is brilliant when this is neither demonstrable at present, in the recent past nor in the form of any paper trail. What could be more of a faith-based than that?

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2011 2:26 PM

Obama keeps this harassment shit up, and by Nov 2012 you will no longer be able to even number the mob with us.

So, by all means, keep it up! You hated Reagan's America? Wait until about Dec 2013.

Why is it that the other guitar makers that use this wood aren't being targeted???

Posted by Marie | September 5, 2011 8:51 PM

Why just target Gibson? Arent others as well doing this?

Posted by Tom | September 5, 2011 11:47 PM

Move stores to canada its easier that way.

Posted by mich | September 6, 2011 1:38 PM

8:51 and 11:47--- Gibson (Tn) and Peavy (MS) are the only US guitar mfg's that are not union shops.

Posted by Anonymous | September 7, 2011 10:52 PM

I love how so many people bashing Obama in these comments quickly forget that we would most likely have Sarah Palin as our president right now (John McCain wasn't exactly in the best of health to run this country with all the crap that has been going on in the world).

I'd take Obama over Palin any day. ;)

Gibson has gotten popped for shenanigans a few times. They are under the microscope, so they should have known better. I would suspect a former employee blew the whistle, they are rated as one of the worst companies to work for in the US.

Posted by eflamberson | September 8, 2011 12:37 PM

Why are conservatives posting on a music blog titled Brooklyn Vegan? There's nothing conservative about Brooklyn or Veganism and there's nothing conservative about the bands that this blog covers. Hop on over to a country music forum or better yet since you want to discuss politics, a fox news forum.

Posted by edward | September 9, 2011 3:18 AM

Haha, conservatives threatening social take over... that's laughable. Not even worth rebuking frankly. Maybe if you all were prominent in something other than country music you'd have a chance but most people don't find songs about god and blind patriotism appealing, sorry. How many want to be that this is either a troll or one person posting over and over again. Why would a conservative be here?

I wonder if Obama's new luxury busses have any illegal exotic wood it them. if so it should be ripped out and seized until this is resolved just to be fair across the board and inline with what they did with Gibson.
