Glasslands (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Glasslands

Williamsburg venue Glasslands Gallery was robbed earlier this month, but sort of kept it to themselves. Someone had mentioned it to me, but I didn't see anything online, so I thought maybe it was minor. Ends up it wasn't. Now taking a cue from Silent Barn which was robbed just a couple of weeks earlier, Glasslands is reaching out to the community for help.

They write:

HELP US TO REBUILD OUR STOLEN PA

The GlassLands Gallery was founded in 2006 by Rolyn Hu and Brooke Baxter as a true labor of love. Opening it's doors with very little start up and donated or recycled materials Glasslands quickly grew into a vital part of the Williamsburg community. Hosting live music, dance parties, special events, lectures, ongoing interactive art projects and even a free after school program that taught kids from local public schools dj'ing, screen printing and music lessons with the help of volunteers. A multi-functional art space, the converted warehouse became a fast home to a number of artists, musicians and any other type of friend or stranger who had a mind to contribute to it's ever evolving vision.

On Tuesday Aug 2nd at 2am GlassLands and practice spaces were robbed. Thousands of dollars worth of sound equipment was stolen and damaged, including but not limited to monitors, turntables, mixer, lighting equipment, etc. It breaks our hearts that after 5 years of being in the same space something like this would happen in our community. Under normal circumstances, we would be able to bounce back. Currently with the help of great friends that temporally donated equipment we are able to still keep our doors open. However as most of you know this comes on the heels of a massive renovation which included a full stage rebuild and finally central AC for our hot summer nights. If you would like to help or know someone who does, please consider donating to our PayPal. We are just looking to get back on our feet!

We would like to thank all the amazing volunteers, interns, bands and friends who have dedicated their hearts and time to GlassLands over the last 5 years. You know who you are! We have fought long and hard to keep our doors open and we are not going to let some lame/triflin fools slow us down.

-thanks so much
Everyone at the Glasslands and PopGun Booking

Paypal link is HERE. Saint Motel, Follower, Sea Monsters, and Freshkills play Glasslands tonight (8/23).

Shouldn't insurance cover loss by theft?

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 10:54 AM

Here we go again.....

Plan a) Get trust fund hipsters to donate so that we can use more drugs and live for free.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 10:57 AM

i'd be more likely to help if the people at glasslands weren't dicks every time i went there

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 10:58 AM

BURGLARIZED.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 10:59 AM

paypal link to NOT SHOW how much $$$ has been donated...

real smart move Glasslands!

can't tax you guys for $$$ you get....

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 10:59 AM

You mean "It was minor until Silent Barn raised $36,575 to replace their stolen PA."

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:00 AM

Sorry Glasslands, I already gave to Silent Barn and I want to keep the other donation money I have set aside for when 285 Kent or Death By Audio gets jacked

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:02 AM

nyc insurance for stores, bars and clubs does not cover theft.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:05 AM

what?! silent barn raised 36,575?! that's about half of what 70K kid makes!

can that kind of $$$ go to something more useful? like fighting off poverty around the world?

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:07 AM

um, insurance. they are a business. i'm sure they have to have insurance to be in business.i feel like these "robberies" are the biggest scams. probably inside jobs to get people to dole out money to them
such crap

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:07 AM

string of inside jobs maybe? Look among your own, hipsters. There may be a cat burglar on the order of the old man on that episode of the Simpsons in your midst.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:07 AM

Eh. Silent Barn was a genuine DIY spot run by volunteers, Glasslands is a for-profit 21+ bar/venue that frequently sells out. What's next, a Bowery Presents Kickstarter?

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:08 AM

glasslands, you are great. i am sure you will be back on your feet in no time. disregard the haterz.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:11 AM

"nyc insurance for stores, bars and clubs does not cover theft."

Not true. Like every insurance, you have to have additional contracts for items such as theft and (natural) flooding.

i am pretty curious as to how that much equipment can be stolen without anybody noticing...

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:17 AM

Alot of williamsburg practice spaces have been getting broken into recently

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:19 AM

Damn shame. One of the better spots in the city.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:20 AM

Liability insurance is a must in case someone is injured. you'd be foolish not to have it. theft of goods not required but obviously a good idea. and fire insurance is a good idea too.

in the old days, 60's + 70's landlords would torch unprofitable buildings in the EV and S Bronx and collect insurance money.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:22 AM

"i am pretty curious as to how that much equipment can be stolen without anybody noticing..." they were closed! the space was broken into.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:25 AM

back in the day, you could get away with anything.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:25 AM

in time when many people are out of work they have the balls to ask for money. are they offering free shows?

Posted by lola | August 23, 2011 11:25 AM

did they get AC yet?

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:30 AM

The middle class is getting robbed every day.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:32 AM

total scam...

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:39 AM

LIVE NATION LOST LOTs OF MONEY. fundraiser?

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:43 AM

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:45 AM

On the night in question I saw 4 cretins load up their shitwagon w used audio equipment. one guy had dreads, another was wearing a doo-rag, and 2 other guys looked like they had no pants on, just boxers.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:45 AM

Good! Thats what they get for being a 21+ wanker club. I Hope they never recover the money they lost from the theft.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 11:46 AM

This funny, but probably true so I had to repost.

the hipster grifter strikes again!

Posted by annie momus | August 23, 2011 12:24 PM

I would donate, but I blew my entire trust fund on hummus.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 12:41 PM

All haters above are still mad they weren't on the list.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 12:52 PM

Bros jacking bros?

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 12:55 PM

I went their once and they were treating people like shit. 12:52 was right there was a list & half the line was on it - bouncer was acting like a dick.

The fact they are pretending to ask for support like a DIY venue when they act more like red rope club is infuriating. I'm heartened by all the other people here telling them to fuck off.

Hey glasslands! Fuck off. Close. Good riddance. Thanks!

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 12:59 PM

I come we hear venues breaking into in Brooklyn but nowhere else around the country....

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 1:23 PM

Those two girls running this place are fucking assholes. They make people wait outside to make it look like there's a giant crowd queuing for the show. Don't give these trust fund fucks shit.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 1:23 PM

New York Press: Are there any business models or venues you've looked to for guidance?

Rolyn Hu (Glasslands founder): Lee Iacocca. I read his book when I was really young and still have a copy of it sitting on my mantle.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 1:26 PM

I really hope that this place closes down for good.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 1:28 PM

wow, so much hate. where are all the people who go there on a regular basis? it's not like the place is ever empty.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 2:26 PM

silent barn stole the equipment

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 5:00 PM

how are you able to place an exact time to the break in? (2am and not 'between the hours of...') Was there a security camera? just curious.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 6:06 PM

"black guys did it"

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 7:13 PM

i'd be more likely to help if the people at glasslands weren't dicks every time i went there

Posted by Ajax | August 23, 2011 8:04 PM

i don't care wat y'all say. i played my first show there back in 2006 and saw usa is a monster kill it when they had nothing but shit beer and raw space. so the place isnt a squat hole for the under 21 set anymore. still a great venue in my mind

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 8:37 PM

hipster on hipster hate. get em' kids!

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 8:39 PM

Glasslands? I'd like the place better if it were called Electriclarryland. I'd help that place out if it was burgled.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 9:06 PM

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 9:37 PM

you club owner fuckers need to invest in some crazy ass pit bulls to roam the place when you're not around. thugs hate dogs, and you're shit will be safe. that is, if it's not just an inside-job scam .... seems like there's a lot of that going on around USA these days.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2011 9:59 AM

die yuppie scum

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2011 3:12 PM

Glasslands is most definitely one of my favourite spots in all of NYC. it's really terrible that this has happened to such a great place.. but they are packed so often and have such amazing musicians come through that i'm sure they will be just fine with a little help. more power to them for asking their community for help; many are happy to give! haters will be haters.. if they couldn't post anonymously on here i'm sure they wouldn't have the balls to say some of those things..
