Glass Candy @ House of Vans
Glass Candy

Man Man brought their own big top into town last night (8/4) at House of Vans, complete with balloons, neon, kazoos, $40 long-underwear, and over the top outfits as part of a one-off with Glass Candy and Crystal Antlers. Man Man's live show, which pretty much hasn't changed for as far back as I can remember, is basically a schtick-y circus on stage. And just like a five-year old coming off a cotton candy sugar-high at the circus, I was bored almost instantaneously. All of the members of Man Man are highly capable musicians (especially drummer Pow Pow), but their vaudevillian polka-funk is hardly enough to stick in the brain longer than the moment you walk out of the venue doors.

Supporting acts fared much better. Glass Candy, despite a live show that consisted of vocalist Ida No doing an impression that I'd equate with Karen O in a Jazzercise class, were definitely more interesting. The sugar-y electro-pop jems were fun and though the House of Vans sound system can be unforgiving, sounded great. First band Crystal Antlers' psych-pop was also rewarding, with the band performing their organ-heavy space-jams to a relatively modest crowd. Glass Candy was my favorite of the three, mostly due to my incoming familiarity with Crystal Antlers.

Catch Crystal Antlers at Glasslands on Saturday night (8/6), with Gary War, Team Robespierre, and Balkans. Tickets are still available. Tickets are also now on sale for the show Crystal Antlers are playing with WU LYF at Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Hey...did this ever get to capacity? Going out for Tokyo Police Club/Against Me. Was curious as to around what time I should be there.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:03 PM

Crystal Antlers were great
Glass candy sounded like a rave
Man Man killed it like always.

Great show.

Can't wait for Converge. That show will be the best House of Vans show since hipsters won't be there.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:04 PM

Metal dudes did you check out the audience pics? They're called girls.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:08 PM

Frohawk was THERE!

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:08 PM

SOLD OUT!

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:09 PM

Man Man is queer bait, right? I mean, I'm not reading too far into these pictures, am I?

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:10 PM

@203pm. I always show up right after the opener goes on and there's never a line to get in. You should be fine.

Kids who show up at like 6pm or whatever are hipsters/kids with no responsibilities aka jobs.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:10 PM

I did see Frohawk there. Although I still don't get why he's so famous.....

can someone explain?

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:11 PM

Well at least the girls are hotter than they were for Fucked Up.....

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:11 PM

12:08 they got a picture of you! Congrats! http://www.brooklynvegan.com/img/music/manman/houseofvans/46.jpg

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:12 PM

I just walked by there and the line is around the block!

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:13 PM

Wow, looks like fun...yay. Bunch of 15 year olds. Yay.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:18 PM

If Frohwak is in the house you're at the right place.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:19 PM

Who's 12:08? I don't see a 12:08 commenting here.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:22 PM

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:22 PM

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:25 PM

aforementioned 12:08 = 2:08(a)

"August 5, 2011 2:08 PM" looked kind of like "12:08 PM" at first glance

did I spell everything correctly too? lol

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:27 PM

Bummed by that Karen O comment. I'm sure Karen saw Glass Candy play at least once before Yeah Yeah Yeahs were even a band

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:30 PM

^metal dudes are mad

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:31 PM

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:36 PM

This show needed more Darren Mabee

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:39 PM

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:44 PM

can we get a pit report?

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:45 PM

I got there at 10:02 and they didn't even check to see whether I RSVPed. It was kinda crowded but not packed by any means. Fun show!

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:47 PM

anybody who there have photographic evidence of the purported Frohawk sighting?

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:49 PM

^ sorry 2:49, I would have snapped a pic but I was too busy vomiting in the corner

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:52 PM

Williamsburg, WTF? It just gets worse and worse, doesn't it?

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:58 PM

luvd glass candy wish they'd tour more.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 2:59 PM

gangster grillz!

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 3:00 PM

Sexual Chocolate in Crystal Antlers is quite the stoned showman. This gig confirmed for me that he's a more necessary element of their live show than even their guitarist is (who was overpowered by the new kick ass female organist all night).

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 3:02 PM

Yeah, seriously, I like the yeah yeah yeahs, but glass candy were around and doing glam garage rock before them. But I guess a 24 year old "writer" wouldn't know that.

And what's with all this balloons and neon garbage? So fucking lame.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 3:05 PM

My pit is currently hairy, sweaty and a little musky.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 3:05 PM

2:27: You didn't put a comma after 12:08 (whoever that was). You also did not capitalize the first letter of the first word in your reponse (the 'did'). Also, it would have been next to impossible to confirm whether that person sitting in that mess was actually the 1st 2:08 commenting, which you were aiming your ad hominem towards.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 3:11 PM

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 3:13 PM

Wow! Welcome to LOSERVILLE, USA Population 1,000.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 3:34 PM

These fans are the equivalent of the girls who wear pink Yankees hats and go to the stadium to be seen and to cheer Jeter.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 3:42 PM

Thanks 3:11, I've got a question for you now. How do you keep a moron in suspense?

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 3:59 PM

^ Then they go get herpes from their steroid-infused BFs, right? lol

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 4:01 PM

ctrl+f "hummus" NOT FOUND??!?!!?!

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 4:11 PM

Why do dumb ass teenage hipsters think wearing neon warpaint is cool!?!

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 4:18 PM

They're just very respectful of Native American culture, that's why.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 5:07 PM

Wow, I'm pleasantly surprised to see all the positive comments RE: Glass Candy. I've been a huge fan of just about anything Johnny Jewel works on. I also thought they were the best of the night.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 5:10 PM

the review is worse than the music

and why do we need 100 photos of nerds, please explain

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 6:34 PM

2:39 did you know he actually lost a ton of weight and looks pretty fit now, good for him

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 6:35 PM

Glass Candy treated the evening appropriately; bring no merch, play short, load out while the shitty band after you is playing.
Glad to see them under any circumstances, though it goes without saying this was a terrible environment.

I guess thats one way to look at it.. or
..don't try to supplement your income by selling merchandise and don't try and socialize with any of the other bands instead load out while the band you are opening for are playing.. this is appropriate? No wonder this band has been around 10 years and and haven't gotten any more popular..

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 8:06 PM

free shows seem to attract a more obnoxious type than paid shows.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 8:41 PM

"ctrl+f "hummus" NOT FOUND??!?!!?!"

As it should be.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 8:44 PM

apparently drunk, puking underage kids are cool with the NYPD as long as they're attending a branded corporate playground party

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2011 9:41 PM

best thing about Glass Candy:

she's in her 40's

9:41 saw cops making two teenagers pour a ton of beer down the sewer and right write them summons on the line for Cro Mags last week.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2011 12:24 AM

You can gather ten times or even more people by organizing a free show as compared to the paid show.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2011 9:00 AM

The sound in there was terrible and they ran out of beer when Man Man started. Weak...

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2011 9:11 AM

there are more pictures of hipster doucebags pretending not care about being photographed then there are of the bands!

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2011 11:55 AM

11:55: Or maybe -- Just Maybe -- they're happy being out with friends, seeing bands and drinking alcohol. Like normal people.

Everyone's photographed doing everything nowadays -- they've probably just accepted that (perhaps troubling) fact and moved on. Unlike you.

What the fuck, the purpose of being a band is to increase your popularity?? Your relevance is determined by the size of your fan base? It's music, not a stock portfolio shitbrain.
I wouldn't/don't put effort into talking to people I don't give a fuck about either. (making an exception here, and am reminded why I generally follow that guideline anyway.)
