NY PressNY Press

"As has been rumored for weeks, Manhattan Media is shutting down the New York Press and reviving Our Town Downtown, starting September 1. The weekly publication-a magazine/community newspaper hybrid, according to the press release-will focus on news, politics, real estate and the arts in lower Manhattan. A 20,000 copy run will be circulated below 14th Street.

The New York Press will live on in name, sort of. The arts section of Our Town Downtown will be called New York Press, and nypress.com will be expanded in the fall to aggregate news and content from Manhattan Media's ten titles and other local news sources." [NY Observer]

New York Press was a pretty good paper for about 3 or 4 years, from '88 to '92. In the mid-90's it was a rag. The last 10-15 years, its been a joke. A sad joke.

no, the amy sohn years were awesome. actually the issue after sept 11 was really good too, calm, sober, intelligent, no hysteria.

This rag was fucking Clown Shit!

In the 90's the Press was way better that the Voice. Actually, I don't personally remember the VV ever being good, but I suppose it must have been at some time in the distant past. Kind of like CBGB on that way.

Путин не строгий вегетарианец. Больше бесплатно водку для эксплуатируемых масс.

Long live The L Magazine!

I liked the NYP a bunch of years ago and feel that it was stronger like many of the comments had already outlined. I began to lean to the Village Voice for the kind of content I was seeking from such a paper and online resources for the rest. It had a nice run so let's see how good or bad this new launch will be.

Frohawk thinks the NYPress oh wait no one gives a fuck.

Posted by Anonymous | August 20, 2011 11:32 AM

Let's hope the Village Voice is next. Good Riddance.

too bad. armond white is one of the few popular film critics who provides critical insight into contemporary filmmaking.

I'll miss MAAKIES.

Boring feature stories, mostly lame writing, weak supplements on music and visual art, endless blather by armond white on film, 2nd rate graphic art-- this paper has been DOA for the past 20 years. at least.

2:12- White is nothing but an educated troll. Contrarian just for contrarian's sake. Sad really. He has no thoughts of his own that aren't a response to others'.
