Newport Folk Festival

You've seen the uplifting YouTube videos of the school children from Staten Island, but to witness their contagious innocent joy in-person is even more of a must. It's almost as if each popular number that they cover, they are canonizing by allowing the listeners to hear the songs through the ears of a child. Their version of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" was a true goosebump moment. [Metro]
Staten Island's PS22 Chorus, who are known to cover bands like MGMT Ariel Pink, and Freelance Whales (who also played the festival), played day 1 (7/30) of the Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island this past weekend. . They covered songs by Adele, Lykke Li, John Lennon, Austra and others.

Pictures and videos from their set at Newport below...

The novelty has seriously worn out here. Please no more PS 22 vegan!

Wow, these kids at 11-13 yrs old probably have more talent than 1:37 ever will. Some posters truly have little or no soul left.

Thanks for posting BV, didn't make it early enough to catch these kids, but glad I can revisit it here.

This is 1:37 and I HAVE NO TALENT! Have never professed to I'm just over the whole cute (and very talented) little kids covering meaningless indie artists/songs that no one really cares about. Come on people Austra? Lykke Li? Pathetic!

I love the educational aspect of what these kids are doing but teach them about real songs with real meaning and lasting value.

That Austra song is simply terrible.

It's cool that they got Jack Johnson to sit in on guitar.

I agree wholeheartedly with 1:37 and 2:14....this is hipster grooming at its finest.

I love these kids. Yes, they are a bit overexposed and the Oscars thing was underwhelming, but the videos still make me tear up. The 'Rolling in the Deep' video is awesome. I do agree that a few folk songs would have been a nice touch.

Child exposure thumbs down

hahahha remember when they lip synched at the grammys? so talented.

you know people have no lives when they berate 10 year old kids. speaking of which, that was a killer cover of MGMT's "Kids." that drummer is insane! can't believe what he's doing at his age.

HOLY CRAP! THEY GOOD!!

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2011 9:31 PM

Austra? Lykke Li? pathetic is right when theres plenty of other musicians who have been around a lot longer with more substance. Yes that really is grooming and pushing mediocre music onto impressionable kids. It might even made more sense to have covered any number of Bjork songs whether of not all people are fans of hers.

some of you commenters are truly awful people. these kids are doing amazing things! if you don't like the artists they're covering then keep scrolling down the page instead of bringing your unnecessary negativity here. and even if you don't love Austra or Lykke Li, at least they're discovering music from non-mainstream artists. would you rather they cover justin bieber and katy perry?
