The War on Drugs @ Cameo Gallery
The War on Drugs

The War on Drugs played two NYC shows this past weekend that took place at Cameo Gallery on Friday (8/19) and Mercury Lounge on Saturday (8/20). The Cameo show was with the impressive lineup of both Caveman and Porcelain Raft, and the Mercury show was with Porcelain Raft and Arc in Round. We've got pictures and videos from the Brooklyn show (Cameo) in this post.

The War on Drugs released the Slave Ambient LP on Secretly Canadian last week (8/16). You can order the album in a number of different formats at the Secretly Canadian webstore. The video for album track "Baby Missiles" is below and a free download of the track is HERE. The band will tour this fall with Purling Hiss and Carter Tanton. No NYC date has been announced for that tour (yet?). It took a few years for The War on Drugs to work out their kinks, but the band has really come into their own now. If Bill is right, we won't be seeing War on Drugs in venues as small as Cameo for much longer. All dates are listed below.

Caveman is continuing to to tour with The War On Drugs for the next few weeks. After that Caveman will play their own Mercury Lounge show (9/15) with JPF.

More pictures and videos from the Cameo show and all dates below...

anyone else think the sound at mercury lounge sucked for war on drugs on sat?

also, their drummer is weak. they can really benefit from being tighter. the songs are there...the lead singer/guitarist has the chops...the rest of the band and the sound just lacked.

album is solid though.

Great show, really dug Caveman.

War on drugs were good at cameo but still not grrreat. They need to add another guitarist to flesh stuff out imho.

Caveman definitely stole the show. Do not sleep on those guys.

Agree with the basic points stated above...

WoD need a 2nd guitarist to add more depth and a drummer capable of not needing a machine to back him up. With a few tweaks, WoD could be such a great live act. New album RULES!!!!!!!!!!

the sound at mercury was fucking TITS, bud. no idea how you could even come close to reaching that conclusion.

Posted by Anonymous | August 22, 2011 2:55 PM

Vocals really got lost at Mercury Lounge. As for thinness to the music, they really just need Kurt Vile back.

"If Bill is right, we won't be seeing War on Drugs in venues as small as Cameo for much longer"

Has the Pitchfork review leaked? Are they hyping the new album?

Otherwise I can't see TWOD getting some sudden boost in popularity. The new album is great, but so was the debut album and the last EP. Nobody seem to care.

I heard this war on drugs band were more of a krautrock band.. just checked the live video and i dont hear it at all.. hmm

Posted by Anonymous | August 22, 2011 5:39 PM

Because anyone who labels a bands sound never knows what they are talking about. :)

Posted by Anonymous | August 22, 2011 5:41 PM

@ 5:39. "Your Love is Calling my Name" is the best track on the new album and there's a bit of a krautrock influence on that one. they're definatley not a krautrock band though

why do people keep playing at cameo… that venue is DEPRESSING and treats bands like shit

Posted by Anonymous | August 22, 2011 8:10 PM

@3:59 - The War on Drugs are deservedly getting a lot of new fans. I think the fact that they sold out Cameo and Mercury Lounge back to back is a great illustration of that. Their last time through as a headliner they played one night at Mercury Lounge and while crowded, I don't believe it was sold out. I hope this band breaks through. They are one of my favorites.

what does cameo do to the bands?

Posted by Anonymous | August 22, 2011 10:18 PM

Bands keep playing there because the DO treat bands well

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 3:15 AM

PITCHFORK SAID YESSSS! I knew it! I was right! This band is gon' be huge (well indie huge)!!

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2011 10:53 AM

This is great. They deserve it.
