Anna Calvi @ SPIN House (more by David Andrako)
Anna Calvi

We're throwing a BrooklynVegan Holiday Party at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Tuesday, December 13, 2011! What does that mean? Well, so far it means a set of music by Mercury Prize nominee Anna Calvi (she lost to PJ Harvey) and a low ticket price of $8.00 with $1.00 from every ticket going to to Toys For Tots! Stay tuned for more details, including lineup additions, but tickets go on sale next Friday, September 16th (which is one day before another BrooklynVegan event takes place). Tickets will be on ticketmaster, but you can also get them without a fee at the Mercury Lounge box office, or at the MHOW box office on Saturdays.

For Anna it's one of four North American dates in December. They're all listed below...

Hotness.

Her picture is a nice antidote to the Amy Winehouse one on the side.

this is awesome - good pick BV!

Great news, BV, but I can't help to think the promo for her has a been a bit disappointing. Having to cancel SXSW was a huge miss, as it would have set up her whole year. She really needed some festival slots but glad to see she's not retreated completely. Her debut was better than Let England Shake IMO.

remember to never compare a rookie with a seasoned professional.

you should have left pj harvey out of this. awkward for poor anna.

Posted by Anonymous | September 8, 2011 12:44 PM

Comparing ANY female singer/songwriter to PJ Harvey is a lost cause.

Posted by Anonymous | September 8, 2011 12:59 PM

Beth Gibbons > Mazzy Star > PJ Harvi > Anna calvi

Posted by Anonymous | September 8, 2011 1:21 PM

Bjork>PJ

Posted by Anonymous | September 8, 2011 1:23 PM

Katy B should've won that Mercury shiz. Fuck, I'm serious.

Posted by Anonymous | September 8, 2011 4:06 PM

OMFG PEOPLE STOP MENTIONING BJORK!!! ITS MAKING ME ANXIOUS

Posted by Anonymous | September 8, 2011 6:56 PM

Annie Lennox > PJ Harvey >>>>>> Bjork

Posted by Anonymous | September 8, 2011 7:47 PM

^PJ Harvey can't hold one candle to Bjork and I like em both and have seen them both in concert. PJ live shows fall flat to me...Bjorks first 3 albums are untouchable..sorry it is the truth

Posted by Anonymous | September 8, 2011 8:51 PM

this thread is boring

Posted by Anonymous | September 8, 2011 8:56 PM

Yeah, well nobody's holding a gun to your head and making you read it. So you can shut that mouth of yours and walk right out that door you came in, and we can both try to forget about the injustice of it all. Sound fair?

Posted by Anonymous | September 9, 2011 3:55 AM

8:51: To be fair, I haven't seen Bjork live, but I've seen PJ live (only on the most recent tour) and it was a decent show.

I've listened to a couple of Bjork's solo albums and although good, they don't captivate me like PJ Harvey's do.

Also, the persona of both is a big thing to me. Bjork always seemed to have a bad attitude along with trying WAY too hard to be weird/different (Tori Amos, are you listening?). PJ's persona comes off as more pleasant, introspective, and natural.

That's just what I think.

Posted by Anonymous | September 9, 2011 11:33 AM

^Yeah I can't speak interms of personality..PJ may have that down..not saying PJ is bad but Bjork seems like the more rounded backage...and in terms of Tori...she really hasn't done anything weird since the early days..her stuff is pretty mainstream (or at least not so odd) these days.

package I mean

Posted by Anonymous | September 9, 2011 11:55 AM

the whole lot of 'em are sippin.

Posted by Anonymous | September 9, 2011 12:08 PM

11:54: I hear ya. Kind of a shame that quality female singer/songwriters are hard to come by these days, but I'm hopeful.

Posted by Anonymous | September 9, 2011 1:13 PM

Wow! One of the girls from the Robert Palmer video actually started a band. "She's so fine there no tell'n where the money went. She used to look good to me, but now I find her. Simply Irresistible!"
