Arcade Fire @ ACL Live on Saturday (more by Tim Griffin)

"There's only going to be one outcome of the Polaris Music Prize gala on Monday night: either the Arcade Fire wins or the Arcade Fire loses. And Arcade Fire it is...If the acclaimed Montreal ensemble wins, it will be the first time in the award's six-year history that the Polaris grand jury's choice of victor lines up with mainstream tastes. The album for which the Arcade Fire is nominated this year, The Suburbs, hit No. 1 in a number of countries on both sides of the Atlantic when it was released in August of last year, including Canada, the U.S. and the U.K., and it's already got Album of the Year honours at the Grammy Awards and the Juno Awards to its credit. It represents one of those rare moments when critical acclaim, massive popularity and the approval of music-industry insiders are not mutually exclusive but have united in a perfect storm of near-universal acceptance.
If the Arcade Fire loses, expect Polaris foes to get their knives out again and accuse the award of being an exclusive, anti-populist, indier-than-thou club for arty obscurantists with little commercial appeal."
[Toronto Sun]
Other nominees this year were Austra, Destroyer, Timber Timbre, The Weeknd, and Braids who are co-headlining the BrooklynVegan official CMJ showcase at MHOW this year (tickets are on sale).

the toronto sun summed it up quite great actually. i known friends of mine that criticized the polaris prize to only cater to small and starting acts. it would be nice to see a more diverse selection of candidates for the shortlist that dont all fit inside the genre of alternative rock. good for arcade fire to win though.

They win Grammy & Polaris for their worst album!

Funeral was the funeral of indie
We have reached the end of western culture
There is no more hope that music can save us
Time to move to Bali and bang on a termite-hollowed log

In Rainbows was the funeral of indie...

"funeral was the funeral of indie"
Yes indeed it seems this shall be a mantra of all us hummus eaters worldwide... Indeed it may be time to simply bust out the food processor and let the gentle humming sound of an electric engine smashing chickpeas be the only music that gets my hips thrusting anymore.

Well deserved.

I personally would've liked to have seen the award go to Braids or Austra, but there's no doubting that Arcade Fire put down an incredibly worthy album of the prize. Congrats to them.

>In 10 years, you will all look back at Suburbs and cringe
I would like to hear you elaborate more eloquently on such a statement. Really, please, you have the floor. The album's writing conveys imagery of living in a subrban environment quite well, I think. I'm a moderate fan of the band, and while the album certainly isn't my favorite of the year, I think it did a brilliant job doing what a lot of albums these aren't able to accomplish ... and that's sound like one whole unit. An adventure. A journey. One epic piece meant to be listened to from front to back and not cherry-picked for tracks or hits.
So please, go on. Why will it be looked upon in shame ten years from now?

Remember when Loverboy swept awards and everyone wore Members Only jackets?
The same is the future of Arcade Fire.
Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 12:29 PM
@12:29pm - because they are average and the album is pretty musically repetitive and if you're into the whole reading the lyrics and pondering them - the lyrics are pretty prosaic. but none of that really matters. the music is VOID. why is it void? because bands like arcade fire have nothing to say. if i could proffer an explanation of why people write "in 10 years you will cringe" - they aren't really criticizing arcade fire or their mediocre album but probably more the state of indie and its meaningless mainstream-ism.
So I'll take the floor: there is one thing that stands out and that is your condescending, self-righteous attitude about knowing what is "epic" and what isn't. I wonder if one day people like you wake up ten years from now and cringe at yourself. If this album is an adventure... a journey for you... my god, get an addiction.
