THROWDOWN

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 4:34 PM

Why is this a big deal? The shows at Mercury Lounge are generally nothing to write home about, maybe 1 in every 10-15 shows are worth seeing. Any talent buyer can do this guys job.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 4:37 PM

I'm representing the baliff.

Posted by hobble court | September 15, 2011 4:38 PM

@ 4:37 "worth seeing" is your opinion. In this business it's more about moving tickets and selling drinks.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 4:40 PM

@ 4:37 especially since all you need to do to fill their calendar is pick up the next phone call and say confirmed

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 4:40 PM

PUSSY FIGHT!

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 4:42 PM

@4:37 Wanna come and book my club? You seem to know what you're talking about.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 4:42 PM

This is gonna be good. In one corner you have the ever growing and much maligned by BV commenters Bowery Presents, in the other corner you have the cloven hoofed beast of all mega-conglomerates, Live Nation. They should put this rumble on pay per view.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 4:42 PM

In a similar story... Ceders is suing Sabra over unfair chickpea mashing tactics. I wonder what side BV readers will take on this issue as well...

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 4:47 PM

independent music venues are fugging lame. wish they would just go away and let the grown ups handle the business.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 4:47 PM

Did Jay Belin get pouched from Bowery by Live Nation?

It would be better if booking agencies sued other booking agencies when they pouched bands from them. Or it would be a dream come true if booking agencies could sue Managers just for fun.

Posted by Commish Ray K | September 15, 2011 4:47 PM

WEEZER RULES!

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 4:49 PM

This isn't about ML vs. LN, or contrary opinions. If Jay Belin had a year left on his contract with ML, then he can be fucked for breach of contract. Poaching or not, it's his bad.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 4:49 PM

Pouched? Like a kangaroo?

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 5:02 PM

I hope livenation wins. Even Livenation is better than bowery presents.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 5:02 PM

4:37,

I think he booked for all of Bowery Presents, not just Mercury Lounge. I imagine Live Nation is pissed that their main flagship venues in NYC (Roseland, Irving Plaza, Gramercy) don't have as many shows and, when they do, usually cater to a younger audience (hence less alcohol sales). Just a theory though.

Whatever man, just get Frohawk to book Bowery Presents. He'll do it for free as long as he can get into any show as he wants. Only downside is that you'll have to start seeing him on stage a lot more.

"Part of Mercury’s success over the last few years can be attributed to Belin,..."

Puh-lease! Give me a break. The Mercury Lounge has been successful long before he even started working there.

this will be settled out of court for 6 figures

a member of Ariel Pink's band

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 5:16 PM

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 5:18 PM

Jay Belin was 15 years old when Mercury Lounge was booking Wilco in 1996.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 5:31 PM

It's cool to take anonymous pot shots at a guy on a message board. Pathetic.

O dear sweet benevolent Frohawk, please deliver us from this land of corporate clown shit. Take us from this places of children fighting over nickels and dimes and artists playing in front of Heineken billboards. Please show us the way to the light of a better world, where the hummus is plentiful and people still dance.

Fuck the Bowery and Fuck Live Nation

Boycott both of these douche ridden companies.

Posted by Anonymous | September 16, 2011 12:26 PM

Bowery Presents = usually have more shows that are likely to attract hipsters

I'll side with Live Nation, thank you.

Posted by Anonymous | September 16, 2011 1:08 PM

In the battle of Bowery -vs- Live Nation, the winner will clearly be Mamoun.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2011 1:44 AM

I am reading this thinking how much better it would be if you had to register to comment. Anonymous personal attacks are fucking cowardly.

Jay is a good dude, Johnny is a good dude and what ever shit is going on between the two companies they work for is just business.

Posted by Carlo | September 17, 2011 9:37 PM

what makes any of these people "good dudes"?

that they make jokes ion the office and drink beer?

NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

These fuckers have lowered the bar for taste and raised it for prices. FUCK THEM

Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2011 8:36 PM

booking the can't miss shows is easy; finding new bands, giving them a chance first as support and building them into headliners is what separates good and bad talent buyers. Jay was and is amazing at this, his track record speaks for it's self.

Posted by Anonymous | November 21, 2011 4:23 PM

These guys never found nor nurtured anyone. They just coopt the underground, comodify it, create scarcity, then overcharge for it. If both conpanies and all thier bookers disappeared from new york tomorrow, we would all benefit

Jay was a nitrous huffing screw up that had zero talent and couldn't return and email or phone call.. I've dealt with him directly many times, and I know 14 year olds that could have done his job better.. Talk about falling into a piel of shit.. This dude works for live nation now? WOW. wake up
