Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey, who initially announced that her "official live debut" would take place at NYC's The Box and LA's Hotel Cafe, has rescheduled both of those dates and added a number of European shows too. The new US dates haven't been announced yet but, according to a press release, they are set to take place in larger venues than the ones they were originally scheduled for. She also played a secret, unofficial warm up show at Glasslands in Brooklyn on September 14 under the name Queen of Coney Island. That's a picture from the much talked about show above.

Lana Del Rey is also continuing to stir up controversy about whether or not there's any authenticity to her music or image. Amy Klein (of Titus Andronicus) thinks the problem with Lana Del Rey isn't about sincerity, but that she's a representation of what's wrong with the American culture that her image evokes. In her blog, Amy writes:

Lana Del Ray is exactly as real as the past, for the past is exactly what she recalls. She takes the days when women wore floral skirts and orange lipstick and waited at home for their husbands to come home from work so they (the women) could bring them (the men) martinis with olives and makes them real again (the men, the women, the martinis, and the olives.)

Lana Del Ray is sitting at home waiting for you to come home so she can fix you dinner and a drink. Lana Del Ray is waiting for you to come home so she can watch you play video games on the couch and ignore her all day until it's time for bed. Lana Del Ray is waiting for you to come home so you can go to bed and act out all of your wildest fantasies which is exactly what she wants to do--what you want to do, that is. Lana Del Ray is waiting for you because she is your mirror.

So it doesn't matter if Lana Del Ray is entirely sarcastic when she belts out, "It's YOU, it's YOU, it's all for YOU." It doesn't matter that there is an edge to her voice that sounds something like rage and despair. Lana Del Ray has conquered America with plastic surgery, video games, a regression to nostalgia, and an appeal to the sex drive of every male music critic on the planet. It doesn't matter if she has anything real to sell because Lana Del Ray has made us think about the relationship between selling fantasy and selling lies.

Lana Del Ray is the lie we like to tell ourselves--that America has always been, and will always be, this gorgeous woman who can make all our dreams come true. So it doesn't matter if she loves you or hates you because she is going to take all of your money and you are going to let her get away with it. That's the reality of who she is.

We are narcissistic and self-obsessed and so is Lana Del Ray. We are a country in decadent, navel-gazing decline--fading, intoxicated, and longing for the past, but still so beautiful, staring straight into the lens and smiling as we shoot an American tragedy.

The full piece is on Amy's site. Info on Lana's new US shows will be announced next week. You can check out her European dates below.

Speaking of Amy Klein, she has shows coming up too. She and "the Blue Star Band" open for Vivian Girls at Knitting Factory on Tuesday (9/20) and play with Bird of Youth at Union Hall on 9/29. Her other project Hilly Eye play Bruar Falls on September 27 with Puta de Cava, Noon:30, and Mensch. They also play Bowery Ballroom on October 8 with Screaming Females, Underground Railroad to Candyland, and Shellshag and November 2 at Death by Audio with Nisennenmondai, Little Women, and Pet Bottle Ningen. Hilly Eye also recently joined facebook and they hint at a full length album being in the works.

Well, Amy seriously proves once again that she's a genius.

"controversial"?! This is some of the safest shit to be peddled by the P4k drones in a while.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 6:16 PM

lana del ray is a pretty girl who uses her looks to sell her music. it happens all the time, and sometimes the ratio of looks to talent can be depressing. but do we really have to be subjected to a freshman women's studies essay about it?

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 6:19 PM

genius? that's sarcasm, right?

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 6:21 PM

anyone know why ticketholders weren't automatically given tickets to the shows at the 'larger' venues? does this happen often? seems a bit crappy for her 'fans' ...

Posted by giselle | September 19, 2011 6:24 PM

I am totally fine with Lana Del Ray doing all of this..

"Lana Del Ray is sitting at home waiting for you to come home so she can fix you dinner and a drink. WOMAN, BRING ME HUMMUS

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 6:41 PM

Amy Klein, cool the fuck down.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 6:43 PM

Titus Andronicus is pretty much the worst band ever

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 6:43 PM

@6:43: real talk

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 6:45 PM

who gives a fuck about what the touring guitarist of Titus Andronicus, who didn't record shit on either of their records, has to say?

and what the hell did lana del rey do to Amy? stfu

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 6:50 PM

Controversial in that people think she's lame, but her PR firm is trying to convince us otherwise?

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 6:58 PM

I love it when musicians say stuff they believe it's important. News flash, Amy: You're an entertainer. No one cares. If we like it, we'll buy it.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 6:58 PM

How ashamed do you guys feel that you all got burned so hard by the touring guitarist of Titus fucking Adronicus of all fucking things.

You guys got pegged!

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 7:02 PM

So Lana Del Ray is the next Oh Land?

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 7:04 PM

the main reason people listen to LDR's lame music isn't because it's good but because she's hot. the main reason people are reading Amy's lame essay isn't because it's good but because she's associated with a trendy band. so Lana should stop singing and Amy should stop writing, and then all will be right with the world.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 7:05 PM

I think BV commenters expressed their disdain more eloquently by mocking her collagen lips.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 7:11 PM

Amy who? This essay reeks of a jealous rant from an ugly troll

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 7:26 PM

the 2K11 version of Silverchair.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 7:27 PM

7:26 is Lizzie Grant.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 7:27 PM

What, the comments of BV are full of assholes? Crazy!

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 7:30 PM

titus andronicus were stinkola but lana del ray's song is one of the best of the year...jealous girl ranting..so sad....she should learn from a master...

Posted by michael | September 19, 2011 7:32 PM

you can't be "navel-gazing" and "staring straight into the lens" at the same time, actually, unless you have like 6 eyes.

anyone who thinks "Lana Del Ray has conquered America" should get out of the house once in a while. Beyonce is slightly more popular.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 7:34 PM

a master of what? collagen?

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 7:34 PM

After reading the rant I'll be making sure I won't go anywhere near anything that Amy Klein has a hand in. She sounds like a feminist Gallagher brother.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 7:41 PM

beauty is beauty. someone is jealous

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 7:58 PM

So you think it's impossible for one woman to make an observation that another woman is totally phony without it being about petty jealousy?

No wonder these assholes can make you guys buy anything they fucking sell.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 8:02 PM

duck face

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 8:03 PM

I hate this bitch.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 8:05 PM

jeez, i cant stand lana either, but c'mon, no-one on this planet even HEARD about her until two weeks ago! what is she basing this rant on? two music videos posted on pitchfork?

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 8:22 PM

"So you think it's impossible for one woman to make an observation that another woman is totally phony without it being about petty jealousy?"

I agree that Lana is phony but I find the essay cringingly bad.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 8:24 PM

Amy's piece is well-written.

Lana is the perfect example of a created image; she's the indie-rock Britney Spears: a perfect image of beauty and youth with little substance, and little individuality.

However, will she last as long as Britney? Spears marketed to the lowest-common-denominator: young girls. Lana is pandering to men, and leaving women untouched, a major mistake on her part. While men will have a fleeting interest in her, women will be the ones actually spending money on her. Her mistake is almost as big as her fake lips.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 8:29 PM

WHO?

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 8:31 PM

30 some comments in and no-one has mentioned the 5 string bass in that picture?

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 8:32 PM

Amy's piece is not well-written.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 8:35 PM

the problem with too much access (the internet) is that the naysayers quickly come out of the virtual woodwork to spout their bullshit as if they "know" who Lana is. this Amy girl doesnt know her, but she has no problem shucking her hipper than thou 2 cents into the discussion for a bit of attention herself. why dont you get off your keyboard and go write a song. ... or go walk your poodle in Brooklyn. Lame.

what Lana is doing (or has been doing for years) is creating clip style music videos. it's fucking ART you dipshit. ART. just as if you'll go pay $12 to go see a movie. it's merely ART. what? she doesnt pass the hipster smell test? who gives a shit. if you dont like it or her- then move on. no one cares, especially Lana

Posted by Henrie "Ballin" Rhalins | September 19, 2011 8:45 PM

ummmm no, it's definitely not art, dude. its entertainment and it's worlds apart.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 8:54 PM

am i the only one who seriously doesnt find her at all attractive? in fact, she - oh, hey, a five string bass!

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 8:55 PM

^ Amen.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 8:55 PM

how many of these comments are from Amy and her handful of Brooklyn feminist friends?

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 8:57 PM

I guess this chick from Titus is not a fan of Mad Men.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 9:03 PM

There have to be worse offenders for Amy to aim her venom at. I only noticed Lana Del Rey like a week ago because of this stupid blog and her freakish lips.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 9:12 PM

@8:55. No, you're not the only one. I'm in your camp.

I don't think she's anything special to look at. She's your average suburban looking mallternative girl. And in order for Amy's argument to work, you have to believe that Lana Del Rey is "hot".

There really is no case here. And it's like no one who is buying into her press release has seen anyone who really does retro right.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 9:15 PM

Nothing Amy said is wrong, but I have to imagine LDR is self-aware enough to know that's what she's doing. Not to mention FUCK that grad school crap. As usual with academic nonsense, the actual person at the center of this, Lizzie, is completely lost in the fray. Only LDR exists, which is maybe how Lizzie wants it. Either way no such thing as good press.

NOT TO MENTION Titus Andronicus & LDR are both abominations. Titus = The Decemberists.

I hope everyone in both these bands is dead, and the The Decemberists too.

Posted by CFSB | September 19, 2011 9:21 PM

The greatest trick Lana Del Rey every pulled was convincing the world she didn't exist.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 9:38 PM

buncha Uwe Bolls up in this piece

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 9:56 PM

bitches be hatin

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 10:20 PM

as a feminist who loves pop music, I think Amy gets a little confused trying to understand it in her indie worldview. You can see that confusion when she uses "we" and "you" interchangeably, as if she isn't clear who she's even talking about.

pop is phony and that's what makes it pop: the Ronettes, the Shangri-Las, the New York Dolls, Blondie, Bowie, Britney, Beyonce. Katy Perry does LDR's schtick except she actually has hit records.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 10:22 PM

for some reason it didn't post my previous post (maybe b/c it had 'p age views' written in it.

anyway.. she gets press for the same reason odd future do. lots of people click on the articles and she has a big pr firm. simple as that. it's not 2004 anymore.. this is a big business now.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 10:50 PM

Lana is to Amy Klein as hummus is to clown shit. Brooklyn votes Lana.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 10:59 PM

Actually, I heard LDR is opening both Radiohead shows. Amy is pissed.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 11:08 PM

Amy is mad jealous. I heard Frohawk is Lana's gayance. They've been spotted brunching at various spots in Williamsburg. It's Camelot all over again....

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 11:16 PM

You're watching someone get marketed at all of us blatantly. They're even here in the comments. Hopefully she'll be laughed away, but there's probably too much money being pumped in for that to happen. I enjoyed reading Amy Klein's post & I'm happy BV framed their presentation of this corporate financed shell of an artist by linking to it.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 11:37 PM

i like skinny hoes

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2011 11:54 PM

I'd hit it.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 12:01 AM

She looks short. Short girls cannot be hot.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 12:11 AM

If you're looking for more of her music, I've found that you can download her old self-titled album (that she's tried to withdraw from the public) from her old label. http://is.gd/OOQHT8

Posted by SexySasquatch | September 20, 2011 12:57 AM

"30 some comments in and no-one has mentioned the 5 string bass in that picture?"

GOOD EYE.

As for AK and LDR...they get to do what they love for a living, unlike most people on Earth. Meanwhile...Dick Cheney still isn't in prison. Sigh.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 1:04 AM

I had never heard about this person, nor did I care about them. My only contribution is the chorus in one of her songs sounds a lot like that chris isaaks song wicked games. that song was funny.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 2:12 AM

So she's as authentic as Jack White. It's an act where she plays as someone from 50 years ago designed by a PR firm for the naive young crowd for maybe carson daily lemmings.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 3:53 AM

Believe it or not, there's not some huge conspiracy to get you to like artists you don't want to like. Sure LDR has pr, but you're not going to just straight up get brainwashed by it. None of us are that important, nor are the artists that important. Like them or don't. We're adults here, so lets make our own decisions and stop whining about it.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 3:53 AM

clown shit.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 4:59 AM

Mallternative.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 6:52 AM

Who the fuck is Lana Del Rey?

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 8:12 AM

shes on stage singing not at home waiting. and titus looks back at the replacements pretty fuckinh hard too so keep your mouth shut. i guess all music must be autobiographical

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 8:35 AM

She seems like she wouldn't even make a good hummus platter. (Which is an automatic deal breaker)

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 9:26 AM

i dont know anythign about this. who is oh land?

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 9:29 AM

70 comments is too many for this.

Posted by AnonHUMMUS | September 20, 2011 11:03 AM

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 11:13 AM

Holy shit she is a genius.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 11:48 AM

whatever...it's the zit girl jealous at the cheerleader. how old are y'all?

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 11:56 AM

^jealous of*

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 11:57 AM

She's manipulating all of us. The whole authentic / not authentic back and forth. It's genius. Does a p4k interview and then shows up to her show with a random bro backing band and a bejewled iphone case. It's so she would get posts like this. I don't know if it's her or her management but damn they are good at making us talk about her, post about her, and look at her.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 12:04 PM

Ummm...welcome to manufactured nontroversy #48929284 to hit the indieblogosphere. More verbal diarrhea from the liberal arts crowd enlightened by 100 level philosophy and whatever the fuck.

@6:19 FTW - Nothing new is being said here. Also, this is terribly judgmental (INTERNET IS OMG!!!!1) but I'm guessing Amy is not attractive. So there's that, probably.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 12:10 PM

Somewhere midway between lana and amy is a really cool girl. They're both on odious ends of the spectrum.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 12:11 PM

why would anyone read amy's blog

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 12:16 PM

I found that essay so odd.

Lana Del Ray is just a man eater. That's the "problem" with this art. She's fucking Samantha Jones as a lounge singer.
Teaching women to chew em up and spit em out.

Here image is like Karen O - absolutely no concept of love.

She looks like the last person that knows anything about cooking.

The biggest problem with that essay is that it is completely fascist.
Art can never be subjugated to some set of rules - for better or worse - that's sort of the point of art.

So strange

Seems Amy is confused on the concept of sincerity herself.

Posted by Silence | September 20, 2011 12:33 PM

As Axl Rose once sang

Lost in the Garden of Eden
Now one's gonna believe me
But we're lost in the Garden of Eden

It seem this Amy Klein needs to realize her own hypocrisy here

I mean this essay could have been about Beyonce or Lady Gaga and it still wouldn't have made any real sense except show she is so wrapped up in social constructs that are all imaginary anyway.

Thinking is death.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 1:00 PM

I love Titus Andronicus, but this essay is pretty amateur hour.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 1:09 PM

where are the nsfw pics of her?

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 1:23 PM

If she can pull off a live act and her voice has that timbre and she's not a production mirage - I'd say give her a chance - but there is something distinctly un-artistic and cloying about her.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 2:08 PM

orange lipstick...definitely on my wife.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 2:26 PM

why does amy andronicus insert herself in the blogosphere all the time like she is a relevant person? youre one of 10 people who have played guitar in titus you know? you didnt just win gold at the olympics or something. calm down. no need to suck all the air out of the world.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 3:12 PM

She looka ruff brah! Woof!

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 3:24 PM

this reads like a college essay where someone's trying to expand a 30-word idea into a 500-word paper.

BRUNCHWAVE WINS AGAIN!

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 3:56 PM

Give the girl a break. She is passionate about music and has a sense of aesthetic and is brave enough to put herself out there.. good for her.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 5:16 PM

3:56 failed it

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 6:02 PM

@5:16 What is her aesthetic? NJ mallrat? She has no style. She looks like almost every suburban girl in America. Sorry.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 6:18 PM

about as controversial as Hellman's Mayonaise. Yup, that's mayonaise that I heated up and flicked with a spoon on the back of your neck while we were watching Lana Del Rey at Glasslands last week

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 6:27 PM

Hellman's? Puhleeze! Don't be so mayo! MIRACLE WHIP!

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 8:01 PM

How is the woman in the picture above supposed to be like a woman from some bygone era? She just looks boring.
Who is this supposed to appeal to? Mall walkers?

Amy Rebecca Klein--blah, blah, blah yet another Internet Person speaking about someone she does not know and apparently hates them. Move on Internet, nothing to see here but another sad person.

Posted by dave press | September 21, 2011 8:06 AM

How many musicians create an image to go with their music? Why has Lana Del Rey's image created such a big stink? Also Amy Rebecca Klein's post is pretty arrogant considering the last Titus Andronicus' last album was a concept album about the civil war. How is that any less contrived... oh and women's situation was so much better then than in the 1950s.

Posted by Boscogn | September 23, 2011 4:15 PM

when can we start talking about liz phair?

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2011 12:53 AM

mone of the stuff shes saying matters. i like LDRs music because its catchy and she has a gorgeous voice. if she is just a creation of the music industry, than theyre finally doing it right. id rather listen to this than the same disney bubblegum shit.

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2011 5:08 PM

Amy, you're a cunt. Shut the f#ck up you untalented jealous be-ach.

Posted by Jesus | November 14, 2011 10:13 PM

Wow. This was obviously written by a man, or by someone who has not actually listened to the song. If you understand what she is saying, it had absolutley nothing to do with 50's housewives bullshit. At all. I don't believe her personal style conveys a desire to be a picture perfect wife and serve martini's and bend over like a whore all day. There is no woman alive who actually dreams about that, much less sings about that. Why is it that sunning, gorgeous women are always hated and spoken poorly about? She is so beautiful and has a voice that is quite lovely. She is rising to fame....everyone will know her name one day, and she will probably be pretty rich at some point. So I have to agree with someone a few comments above me...it's the zit girl and the cheerleader. Lana Del Rey thinks her music is important and whoever wrote this article thinks her assessment of Lana Del Rey is important. At least Lana is doing what she loves. The "writer" is just sitting at home writing about the lives of others.

Posted by Katherine | November 14, 2011 11:58 PM

well, this might not be relevant to any of you anymore and i realize that i am also just getting caught up in something that is not my business...but i just want to reiterate (@Henrie "Ballin" Rhalins) that ART is ART. not all art is going to function by virtue of the same subtleties. perhaps you are MISSING THE SUBTLETIES in this particular realm of art.

i would also like to say that PEOPLE CHANGE. especially CREATIVE PEOPLE a.k.a ARTISTS. would any of you complaining about this artist be totally cool with the world judging what you are doing NOW against what you did or looked like when you were 19? between 19 and 25, holy hell, there is a lot of opportunity for change there. if you disagree, you either achieved your final sense of self at a very early age or you were unproductive between 19 and 25. let her grow and become who she is. it's a shame she has to do it in front of the world, and i'm sure she's aware of the "consequences" of her "undeserved" fame (she's been working on this shit for 7 years, accept it).

i am a feminist and i am touched by the pathos with which this artist paints her experience of oppressive romance. she's not afraid to assume a case for the character that we avoid being identified with, accomplishing it with referential eloquence. and what's more, since when are women not allowed to push artistic boundaries while speaking the truth about their feelings? it's a position that comes with responsibility, yes, but i am truly shocked that anyone can say she is lacking in talent or poetic insight. i dont know what she feels or thinks when she writes, but i don't think she's being sarcastic or seductive exclusively, and i think she is definitely aware of the danger of the realm she is illustrating. i take these songs as WARNINGS, not suggestions. artists are mirrors for our darkest woundings.

I find it funny that people who apparently love bland, boring, pretentious crap like Bon Ivor and The Decemberists are panning LDR. At least her songs don't make me fall asleep.

Who do you think you are, telling people that their views on topics are wrong, bordering on telling them how to live their life?

Did it ever occur to you that she knows exactly what she's doing?

"i am touched by the pathos with which this artist paints her experience of oppressive romance."

I rather listen to LDR than reading your terrible writing.

It is clear that Amy Klein's original piece about Lana was driven by jealousy and lesbian hate. Wonderful to see Amy's musical career taking off, good job! Continue to keep trashing genuine talent, I am sure you will go far Amy!!!

Amy you are a pretentious bully , don't like Lana , fine I don't give a fuck ! But stop ripping the girl to shreds . This is why I fucking hate hipsters , you are such malicious assholes . You wouldn't be happy Amy unless you were famous , but your not , do you will bring someone else down .
Not working , I see through your ego and bullshit .
Article may be old , but it is a fantastic example of why
most bullies enjoy being hipsters , because the truth is they can get away with their bullying 90% of the time . ps if Lana was a black lesbian you wouldn't have wrote shit , and you know it .

How brave of Amy to slander someone else's art and then take down the ability of her fans to reply.

Lana Del Rey is a genius and will transform the world of music.

This article is probably the most significant thing that Amy will do in her entire life.

I am really astonished and amazed that one women has the audacity to tell another woman how she should express her sexuality. It is entirely beyond my imagining that I would try and tell someone else who they should sexually. I am flabbergasted.
