« Why? cancels most of tour | Torche covers 3 GBV songs on split w/ their tour-mates Part Chimp (all dates announced) »

9:00 P.M., 9/9/2011 --Earlier this summer, it was announced that Guided By Voices's headlining stint at Hopscotch would mark the band's "final-ever" live performance. Strangely, the mood here at City Plaza is generally indifferent. I suspect that this might be because: a) people aren't convinced that this is really the end, being as this isn't GBV's first trip to the retirement home; b) people are beginning to accept that frontman Robert Pollard has reached Danny Glover-like levels of being "too old for this shit"; or c) going into the festival, the band didn't really play up the fact that this was going to be their final show. Whatever the case, the lo-fi legends don't appear to be bothered by the surprising lack of fanfare they're receiving. Assuming this really is the end, GBV might not have gone out with a bang, but they didn't exactly exit with a wimpier either." [Slant Magazine]Some pictures from that North Carolina show are in this post. More of them below...

They were practically at indie rock retirement age when they were new.

now they can go back to their day jobs. if their jobs will take them back.

They went out with a "wimpier"? I doubt that.

their last show was actually supposed to be on new year's eve at irving plaza (at least according to Pollard at their Terminal 5 show last year). they will keep saying this and then act like they never did because they keep getting offered money to play additional shows.

Hands down one of the best live bands ever. No matter how old they are.

Honestly, the reason that they got such a muted response at Hopscotch is because maybe 30-40% of the crowd was familiar with their material. Of that 30-40%, there was a sizable contingent calling out for "Glad Girls" and stuff that this era of the band wouldn't ever play. The show still ruled, though. Hopscotch is a great festival, but the crowd isn't quite on the same level as a lot of the bands that are booked.

The band was a little raggedy, I miss Doug Gillard, Pollard still knocks 'em flying though. The best show of Friday evening was Swans.

8:41..I have seen hundreds of concerts and bands and GBV wouldn't even crack the top 100 for me. Not saying they are bad...but it is just a fun and that is all. Just IMHO

^^ "that singer" has more talent in his fingernail than the combined skills of "artists" in the neighborhood you live in, you little shit
Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2011 12:38 PM
^^^ I live in Nashville, so I kind of doubt that. You little shit.
