Jay-zJay-z

The Brooklyn Paper reports:

Rap mogul Jay-Z will christen the Barclays Center when the under-construction $1-billion home for the Brooklyn-bound Nets opens on the corner of Atlantic and Flatbush avenues next fall.

The hip hop star, who owns a very small portion of the basketball team, will headline the venue's first performance during a three-week grand opening at the Prospect Heights arena in September, 2012, according to a source familiar with the plan.

Jay-Z is set to announce the dates at a press conference at the Barclays Center on Monday -- where Nets officials are expected to unveil a new team name.

It will be a "major announcement," Nets CEO Brett Yormark tweeted.

NY1 is reporting the same. Meanwhile Jay is on tour with Kanye West.

I can't wait for this arena to open and for the Nets to come to Brooklyn. I'm a huge hoops fan and it's about time we had a team. And the arena will be a much better large venue for music than the Garden.

btw the "partially owns" part is exactly 3%
the nets russian owner can buy jay-z and his wife as his doormats.

good let this place open already and get the Nets out of The Rock! Screws up the scheduling times for the other, more important teams that play there.

this is serious stuff, and i would appreciate it if commenters took this seriously. i was a victim of the nitrous when some dude shoved a balloon in my face, which resulted in a really bad allergic reaction. i passed out, and next thing i remember was waking up at a lana del ray with equally confused concert-goers. it was one of the worst nights of my life

Of course Jay Z will perform there. He'll perform at the opening of an envelope. And especially since he has a stake in the venue. And I bet he'll put the tickets on sale a year in advance, so that he can make money off of the interest.

+1 on Brooklyn Hipsters. That would be a sweet team name.

I heard the people behind the silent barn are using their kickstarter money to buy the team and host diy shows at the Barclays center.
