"Post-concert drug orgy mob nightmare erupts on North 7th Street in Williamsburg thanks to the Open Space Alliance."

the calm before the storm @ Williamsburg Waterfront (photo by Schoetz)
orgy

As you may have heard/noticed (if you weren't at the Hold Steady at Beekman Beer Garden that night), jam banders (who weren't at the rescheduled Dave Matthews Band Caravan on Randall's Island) invaded Williamsburg Saturday night because Widespread Panic headlined the Williamsburg Waterfront.

Not surprisingly, some residents weren't too happy with the scene and widespread panic ensued. Gothamist points out that some people still aren't over it and the following open letter to OSA, aka the Open Space Alliance, was drafted:

On Saturday night, September 17, 2011 between approximately 9:40 PM and 10:20 PM the following events took place on North 7th Street off the corner of Kent Avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

A lawless drug nightmare erupted on my street after Saturday night's OSA concert featuring the band called Widespread Panic.
At about 9:40 PM the noise from the concert in the East River State Park had finally ended. So I was about to try to get some video editing work done on my computer when my attention was drawn to loud popping sounds, sounds of gas rushing and the roar of large crowd outside on the street. When I looked out my front window I was horrified to see a huge mob collecting. A group of nitrous oxide balloon sellers had assembled next to a dumpster across the street. Hundreds of people, if not more, were gathering up and down the block buying balloons filled with the gas and inhaling them. Concert-goers already drunk from the East River State Park were becoming even more highly intoxicated from the nitrous oxide. They were wandering around like zombies holding fists full of balloons.

There was not ONE SINGLE COP to be seen anywhere. I called 911 and explained what was taking place. The 911 operator was having difficulty understand the situation so I gave him the location and pleaded, 'Just send the police now. We need help here!', and hung up. Afraid for my safety while filming on my stoop, I used my heel to keep the door open behind me just in case I had to escape. In one of the last clips you can see a couple of men coming toward me in a menacing way.

Nitrous zombies are going to eat your brains! (thus making it impossible to edit videos).

Anyway, I'm really sorry to anyone that appears in these videos, but there are videos which were posted to the StopOSAConcerts Youtube account (the quote at the top of this post comes from one of the video descriptions), and so, well, you can watch them below....

This guy is such an asshole he makes me feel sorry for Widespread Panic fans. Now that's a MAJOR asshole.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:16 PM

It's not like Manhattan is any better....this happens every time there is a street fair in a suburban town in New Jersey for fuck's sake.

Calling 911 because people are inhaling nitrogen? WHAT

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:16 PM

Nitrous Mafia is no laughing matter.

nitrous mafia run williamsburg and the nypd

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:19 PM

this is serious stuff, and i would appreciate it if commenters took this seriously. i was a victim of the nitrous when some dude shoved a balloon in my face, which resulted in a really bad allergic reaction. i passed out, and next thing i remember was waking up at a lana del ray with equally confused concert-goers. it was one of the worst nights of my life.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:20 PM

from gothamists' comments:

"The 911 operator was having difficulty understanding the situation":

-HELP SEND POLICE!
-M'am, stay calm, what is you situation?
-THE KIDS, THEY HAVE BALLOONS!
-M'am, are you in danger?
-NO, BUT THEY'RE WALKING SLOWLY! IN A CROWD!
-Please don't waste our time. [click]

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:20 PM

no wonder people approach her in a menacing way....everyone loves being taped doing drugs...

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:20 PM

Sorry I missed this. How much does a nitrous balloon go for these days in billyburg? Can you get a latte with it?

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:21 PM

"The 911 operator was having difficulty understand the situation"

LOL

hello, 911 operator. yes, people are outside my apartment having fun and enjoying themselves. can you do something about this?

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:22 PM

I know jam band hippies are harmless (aside from their terrible musical tastes), but this still sounds really annoying to deal with if you live in the neighborhood

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:24 PM

I'm not 100% sure why everyone is ripping on this woman...

She has a right, as a tax paying New Yorker, to not want a bunch of idiotic druggies taking hits of a dangerous drug outside her window.

It's not about whether or not it scares her, it's about caring about where you live and not wanting a bunch of idiots destroying a nice place.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:25 PM

jesus christ? don't people have real problems to complain about? a bunch of hippies inhaling nitrous outside her house for 10 minutes and it's like the apocalypse or something.

what a dumb cunt. go eat a bag of farts.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:26 PM

News flash folks, this is Williamsburg, EVERYTHING here is annoying to deal with when you live here.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:27 PM

@122pm exactly hahahha. What an idiot! Did these people break your windows?

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:32 PM

had to do nitrous. the beer situation was a total shtshw. how many hipsters does it take to tap a keg?

Posted by Gassed Up | September 21, 2011 1:33 PM

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:34 PM

You could say there was..... Widespread Panic!

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:36 PM

i remember waiting for the ferry to hold steady there that night and hearing the awful music happening and wondering what it was. my friend was like 'is that a classic rock cover band.' i guess now i know what widespread panic sounds like.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:36 PM

1:25,

1.) she lives next to a MUSIC VENUE. that is going to happen

2.) it's yuppy williamsburg, i'm sure the 'nice place' was all cleaned up first thing the next morning

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:36 PM

you can't listen to wsp if you're not on some kind of drug or a lot of alcohol, they're fucking awful

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:39 PM

1:36.... you sure you weren't hearing the awful music happening at hold steady? those fuckers sound like a steve miller cover band.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:41 PM

As much as I really don't care, I have been frequently surprised to see this happening with such impunity. I have seen this outside T5, Nokia/Best Buy. Webster Hall and Summerstage. Its not just one guy and it is noisy and blatant. You would think the cops would actually care?

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:41 PM

waah....I can't do my video editing....whah....I live in an expensive condo...whah....I should move back to wherever I came from....whah....

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:45 PM

Stop snitching.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:47 PM

@1:36 what's so bad about cleaning up? Do you like filth? Is it fun to have an ugly neighborhood?

I am so tired of people acting like something dirty = good. Honestly, caring for your neighborhood is of much more value than some false dirtiness aesthetic.

Illegal activity was happening outside this girls door, and she felt, as a tax payer, she had the right for that illegal activity to cease.

As for the poster who asked if they were breaking her windows, that's the dumbest argument ever. You don't need to have windows broken to feel uncomfortable with people getting high right next to you.

I'm no prude, but I think everyone has a right to live within their comfort zones, and illegal activity shouldn't be condoned and ignored, especially if it makes a resident uncomfortable.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:47 PM

You missed out on a golden opportunity, how often do you have nitrous available at your front door?! should have capitalized.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:53 PM

Man I bought so many drugs at Union Pool last night

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:57 PM

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 1:59 PM

lol, is this a phenomenon entirely for this band? All "jam" bands?" I've never seen this before.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 2:00 PM

So the legendary nitrous mafia is indeed not a fallacy... Makes me wonder if other memes are also indeed factual. Any word if that Hummus Queens album actually dropped yet?

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 2:19 PM

@2:15

I guess I should be arrested too, cause I don't see the danger either. Maybe you could be so kind to explain

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 2:20 PM

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 2:27 PM

2:29 then who does? I assume you believe we live in an anarchist society? Because crime has gone down, and most believe it has a lot to do with the way the police now monitor potential criminal activity...

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 2:34 PM

Crime is also very low in communist structuring... Would you support a mandatory curfew at 10:00pm? I'm sure those policing tactics would also reduce crime. But at what point does society say enoughs enough and allow the nitrous breathers and the hummus eaters coexist with mutual respect?

Pretty pumped my face didn't pop up in any of those videos. Phew!!!

Nitrous is f'ing harmless. It doesn't even kill brain cells. Illegal to abuse it, yes, but give me a f'ing break. It's the same shit dentists use on their patients. The only health risk is some sort of a vitamin B deficiency if you do it every day for years straight. Otherwise, the only health risk is falling down / falling out of a window / suffocation for the idiots that attempt to do it with gas masks or fill up a closet with it or some shit. As long as you do it the right way, sitting down (or standing up if you're not a rookie and can handle your shit), it's completely fine, and fucking AWESOME. Yewww!!! Who's got my hippy crack?!?

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 4:00 PM

This is just fucking hilarious! I love it. Its so damn funny that this is being discussed and that there's actually a youtube channel against the concert series. There has always been some yuppie scum and gutter punk hipsters that live around that area and have for quite a while now. I will say that more yuppie's (if you will) have moved into Willy B over the past few years and changed the neighborhood with over the top condo's and attitudes of elitists and that kinda blows. They are the ones changing the scene over there and ruining it, not the concert goers who are hitting the nos tank for a few minutes and moving along their way. Granted, if its loud as fuck right outside someones apt or condo and you got work to do, that sucks but think about where you moved to? You moved to an area where a scene has been cultivated and artists of all kinds go to have a good time, Not strollers and 40 somethings who feel the need to start up a youtube channel to destroy what has been happening there before THEY got there. RANT!!

hahaaaa!

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 4:17 PM

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 4:25 PM

Wait, why does everyone on here blast people with strollers? Because they're procreating? You know, that's kind of the point of humanity. Pass on your genes. Well, I hope you guys don't, because if "keeping it real" is more important to you than having a nice house and some kids, then you obviously have a mental deficiency that should probably end with you...

I, for one, love yuppies. I hope to be one soon :-)

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 4:37 PM

Can someone explain, in reasonable and non-inflammatory terms, why gentrification, even in a mild form (which, honestly, is whats happening in W-Burg. Lets be honest, it sucks when it was a trash heap) is such a bad thing? Even if you can't afford to live there, isn't it nice to walk around and feel safe? And have good restaurants to eat at? And be in a desirable place?

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 4:40 PM

hippie scum vs yuppie bitches in the hipster capital of the universe as the battleground. what a war we've got being waged.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 4:40 PM

i don't know about you guys, but i'm getting really sick of having my civil liberties infringed upon by all these half-rate video editors.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 4:43 PM

This is sad. BV reviews bullshit like this, but no Spin Doctors? Sad Sad Sad...

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 4:43 PM

4:40, it's unfortunate because this stage of gentrification is filling in the bland middle. 8ish years ago Williamsburg had a mix of cheap apartments, very expensive and large lofts, good restaurants, cheap restaurants, fun bars, and lots of DIY music venues.

Now we have few cheap apartments, very expensive condos/bland rentals, a couple more good restaurants and a vast number of new average restaurants, and a dying music scene.

We still somehow haven't managed to attract a proper, non-gimmicky movie theater or a really vibrant selection of ethnic restaurants.

All in all this strikes me as a net loss, no?

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 4:47 PM

oh and also, I would add that I feel safe walking around pretty much every stop Jefferson and west, and as only one person I find the Northeast Kingdoms and Robertas in those neighborhoods sufficient (I don't need to eat at every faux-Pastis on Bedford avenue, just one every now and then).

Pricing out isn't really the issue: every neighborhood along the line probably has apartments that are as expensive as ones at, say, The Edge, just with a little more character, plus cheaper alternatives to boot.

But I suppose your mileage may vary on all of the above...

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 4:52 PM

i am really lol'ing over here

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 5:13 PM

This lady is full of shit. Heel in the door? No way, she was walking around filming. No police in sight? Less than a minute into the second video you can hear the sirens from whichever squad has the flashing lights through all three videos.
Zombies walking around? That's just any night after any show - and while the Panic crowd drinks pretty heavily at least this wasn't a bunch of amateurs getting wasted and stumbling out of the Hold Steady and starting a fight about someone's bitchy girlfriend. Shit, you NEED to get stupid wasted to enjoy that recycled whiny crap rock.
This really looked pretty tame - traffic was getting through and nobody was causing a problem. When she said 'you can't hang out here' people moved. It's a public sidewalk, it's not like it's illegal to be there. And she was trying to tell people how classy they were as they were about to be put on youtube; well, she's pretty lucky someone didn't take offense to that and stop her filming. Stay classy, Williamsburg Yuppies.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 5:32 PM

I say let the market decide. It always acts in the most rational way. if there is not demand for this product, the problem will go away. If there is demand, then it is a normal human expression that the market will satsify. The neighbors shouldn't worry, the rationalism of the market mechanism will work out. Perhaps she will need to move, but thats just the market working the way it is supposed to.

I don't love hippies, but what a bunch of pussies these residents are. Let people do drugs and have their fun once and awhile.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 11:46 PM

Wouldn't be boring if Spin Doctors were in charge of this boring drivel.

Posted by Anonymous | September 22, 2011 12:53 AM

haha, ok...

I was at this show and these people will not kill you. Just wanted to clarify that considering they were "coming at you in a menacing way."

These videos are sheer crap.

Yes illegal activity shouldn't be condoned 1:47 PM such as forcing out old time native residents to build awful condos by illegally obtained land through eminent domain or the old warehouse business's, and what the area should be for to some degree music spaces and art spaces, not sterile lifeless dumb condos that bring absolutely no culture at all
especially if it makes a NYC native resident uncomfortable.

Did the cops laugh in her face when they got there? Or did they show up for your frivolous panic call. Call when house or car is being broken into or you see someone getting messed with outside your precious place. Sure you wouldnt bother though.

So you live in an expensive place too 70k guy and you want to kill your fellow pointless materialistic vapid condo dweller??

Posted by Anonymous | September 22, 2011 3:02 AM

Oh my god those videos are boring as hell. And what is so menacing. Did you think they werent going to have parks there by the dirty old East river with concerts in the summer?

This crazy lady probably takes brain damaging prozac. She will love the winter concerts when the Black metal fest happens and theres pigs heads on her sidewalk then you'll miss the jam bands.

You're way too stupid to comment here, 3:02. It's a miracle that you figured out how to breathe on your own.

Posted by Anonymous | September 22, 2011 5:18 AM

Actually, somebody had to teach me how to breathe, but other than that, I'm frankly a genius.

Let the city wide crime wave come, and chase the prissy entitled bourgeois scum back to Ames, Iowa and Huntsville, Alabama. I really hate these complaining, "safe", faux Ruling Class idiots.

Posted by Anonymous | September 22, 2011 8:12 AM

the Spin Doctors would have solved this whole problem with a reunion show on the waterfront.

I just saw an autographed copy of Spin Doctors legendary album Pocket Full of Kryptonite on amazon. This will surely break the all-time record for highest selling price ever. It takes The Spins to achieve greatness!

No fan of bad hippie jam bands, but those attending are no worse than the yuppie idiots outside restaurants\lounges blocking every sidewalk and street in Manhattan or some parts Brooklyn with their impressive salaries.

Susan Fensten - when you wake up Sunday morning to vomit, a coke baggie, piss and a used condom; that'll be from me.
If anyone else would like to leave a gift for the woman who will ultimately be responsible for getting the concerts canceled, you can leave it here: 62 North 7th Street, Apt. 1L

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2011 2:30 PM

what most of you clowns dont understand are the residents dont hate music or concerts, its the aftermath..having puke/piss on ur doorstop during every concert, finding methadone and syringes, getting yoour car vandalized and broken into more than 10 occasions, getting your bicyle tires popped and bent outta shape which costs alot of time and money to repair, having to chase away chicks chasing their bloody tampons on ur stoop, cleaning vomit out of ur flower garden, cant walk your dogs, not being allowed down the block you live on is pretty sh8tty to me..not to mention the 94th precinct who doesnt do a damn thing. Those nitrous punks were literally outside my crib til 5am on the next block over, screaming, laughing, and pissing all over NITA NITAS gates and doors all night..it was nasty..i live right across the street from the park, forget having my tv on or listening to music, or practicing my guitar..you cant hear anything other than the base vibrating your walls and thousands of people screaming out of excitement for their fave band to come out. I went to a stone temple pilots concert there a few weeks ago and couldnt believe all the weed and underage drinking that was going on in there..later that night i had to help some drunk mofo out cuz he couldnt find out where his car was..ur really going to drive in that condition? i told the cops to keep an eye out for him, they didnt care. if the cops dont take responsibility and do their jobs, you cnt have concerts like these in residential areas..sucks but no one should have to clena up after other peoples vomit, piss etc..o and stephanie thayer, i've knwon her for years..shes a charming liar who makes thousands of these concerts along with brooklyn brewery. shes tried to buy me off with free VIP tix and beer so we shut up and stop complaining..she pretty much does it to everyone..and she doesnt like to compromise in regards to lessening the amount of concerts blablahblah she takes your money and then has free volunteers cleaning up trash after lol pay them stephanie pay them..you have $$$$$$$$$$ but ur making fools out of your volunteers
-cmon..have some respect already people

Posted by Anonymous | September 24, 2011 10:18 AM

All you people are getting mad at a lady who is lookin out for her home.. she cares about her own neighborhood.. you people are sick.. your threatening a woman who dont like to live in shit.. shes been living there for a while now unlike you fuken hipsters.

Posted by Anonymous | September 24, 2011 10:35 AM

Hysterical! So sad to live in fear, hating life. Beware though Fleet Foxes fans, expect cops in riot gear ready to smack the clove cigarettes from your hand.

Posted by Anonymous | September 24, 2011 1:54 PM

i see a crowd of people dispersing. considering the size of the crowd and auto-traffic, the crowd appears to be dispersing peacefully and efficiently. the video shows no violence or vandalism taking place. certainly, no evidence of the reporting citizen being in danger. considering the size of the crowd and the traffic, the audible level does not seem excessive. some of the people have balloons. some of the people with the balloons hold the balloons to their mouth, and the balloons deflates. it maybe assumed that those holding the balloons inhaled an illegal narcotic, but the reporting citizen does not inhale. there was no scientific analyse of the substance in the balloons. Nor did the citizen interview any of those filmed. no members of the widespread panic band are seen. i do not recall even seeing or hearing any reference to widespread panic by the crowd. the citizen report was diligent in one aspect of reporting. it is report that this "lawless drug nightmare" lasted a 40 minutes! and the video clearly justifies the police response of no action to the 911 calls.

perhaps the greatest wrong done here is the defamation of character of widespread panic and of the many citizens simply walking down a public street at night.

Posted by what i see | September 25, 2011 1:20 AM

what if the citizen making the video had made some bootleg t shirt, and was hoping to sell them to sell them to a popular music groups fan base? what if a local drug deal was hoping to also sell to a popular music groups fan base? maybe the fans were buying the illegal drugs instead of the illegal t-shirts. now that is a lawless nightmare!

what next time they team up? that would be called networking and marketing.

Posted by whatif | September 25, 2011 1:35 AM

Fuck the person who took this video. Clearly she is infringing our personal liberties to conduct ourselves in the way we chose, and she has no right to say what people should or should not do in a public place. Don't knock it until you try it. Personally, balloons are a lot of fun, and when someone is willing to take the risk to sell them, I feel blessed. Either way, people buying and selling balloons is good for the economy.

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2011 8:09 AM

I really do not know which are worse: hipsters, yuppies or jam band fans.

The video demonstrates just how bad the jam band scene is. Most fans are only there for the drugs. Widespread Panic is a crap band, although Dave Schools is a great bassist. Jam band = drugs. Do not try to convince yourself otherwise.

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2011 9:49 AM

FUCK nitrous, jam bands, hipsters, and most importantly the alleged 'nitrous mafia'

You retards are the reason 90% of the countries on the planet hate us. Good job assholes.

Posted by springfield | September 26, 2011 4:10 PM

That is some funny shit! Get your ass back inside and do your video editing. "Coming towards you in a menacing way"? Please.

Posted by SuckItHipsters | September 27, 2011 11:32 AM

@4:10

I'm pretty sure the rest of the world hates us not cause of dudes taking n20 at jamband shows, but because of bigger reasons - you know like our military bombing all kinds of countries all the time. Or maybe it's what you said. shitheads.

williamsburg sucks - so glad I moved the fuck out

Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2011 4:27 AM

I wouldn't have gotten upset. It is better to just ride the balloon wave. And not be such a lame asshole who has to call up the cops because people are huffing gas. I think it's funny and what would you rather have people do at a concert? hold hands and blow bubbles. i wish someone would burn down those ugly new condos already.

Posted by jessica | October 10, 2011 4:41 PM

I think Frohawk is the only person strong enough to stop the nitrous mafia.

Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2011 5:18 PM

That is funniest thing I've read/seen in a while. The videos are classic. Ahhh!! Attack of the balloonatics. Everyone was pretty mellow. I can see why the cops didn't care. The Nitrous Mafia gave them their cut...

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 8:50 AM

Cops don't stop it most likely because they have been paid. In this world only one thing matters, and that is $$$$$$. Sorry it ruined your night, but from what I've seen the majority of fans do not waste giving their money to the trashy leeches (Nitrous mafia)who ruin the scene just like this, never seen vandalism, and most are respectful to the cities and towns they are in. Could be different up north though.

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2014 4:02 PM

God I hate cunts like this. For the love of god, how was this hurting you? You live across the street from a music venue. Is it all cake and candy except when Panic comes to town? She reminds me of the people that buy homes on golf course fairways and then sue said golf courses because "golf balls are hitting my house." Ridiculous.
