Metallica @ Yankee Stadium (photo by patrickecassidy)
Big 4

As Blabbermouth points out:

The "Big Four" bands of 1980s thrash metal -- METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER and ANTHRAX -- played their second-ever U.S. show earlier tonight (Wednesday, September 14) at the new Yankee Stadium in New York City.

The highly anticipated onstage performance of the "Big Four" bands at the same time happened near the end of METALLICA's set, between "Enter Sandman" and "Battery". Members of ANTHRAX, SLAYER, MEGADETH and EXODUS (whose guitarist, Gary Holt, is still filling in for an ailing Jeff Hanneman of SLAYER) joined METALLICA on stage for a cover of MOTÖRHEAD's "Overkill" before METALLICA ended the night with "Seek & Destroy".

Pictures from the whole night coming soon. Video of "Overkill" and Metallica's setlist below...

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 6:45 AM

@ 1:55 so you're telling me you wouldn't pay over $100 to watch a bunch of over-the-hill acts on a jumbotron?

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 8:05 AM

All of these bands are classics. It looks like it was a great night.

Slayer!

The Big Snore

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 8:16 AM

What I want to know is did John Sterling do play by play on the setlist? Did they get a tape of Bob Shepherd announcing the bands? And most importantly, did the concessions sell hummus and how much was it?

Reloaded...heh heh heh

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 9:14 AM

@ 8:05 AM Over the hill, really? I've not seen metal played like that since 1991. Slayer ripped Yankee stadium a new one, and so did Metallica. Anthrax got ripped off with a lame 4pm slot. To Megadeth's credit, they did play Peace Sells, but the set was otherwise underwhelming (and short).

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 9:34 AM

Mehtallica....Master of Hummus

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 9:38 AM

i do feel bad for anthrax, 4pm? i bet the place was pretty empty at that point.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 9:44 AM

Please, please, please tell me James was wearing his famous Mandals. Maybe an A|X shirt too?

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 9:46 AM

Amazing night, paid too much money, had to work and missed Anthrax and most of Megadeth but Slayer and Metallica were amazing. Metallica played the best set I have ever seen them play. I was on the floor and went up to the nosebleeds after Fade to Black for a few minutes it was really, really cool.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 10:08 AM

Macca killed it at the stadium. The Big 4 is an absolute joke - let's hear it for the bros! The Stones will be the highlight of 2012 at Yankee Stadium.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 10:19 AM

I was on the floor, and it was fucking awesome. Great crowd, with far more energy than the robotic Dave Mustaine. The show was clearly not sold out, and cheap tickets were easy to grab yesterday afternoon.

oh man, the motorhead cover above is pretty cool. wish it was better audio though.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 10:25 AM

biggest sausage fest EVA!!!

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 10:31 AM

@1019 you don't listen to metal so you need to shut your mouth if you weren't there.

slayer killed. metallica great set. overall wonderful night of metal.

next show @ Yankee Stadium.

Daft Punk 2012....

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 10:48 AM

this was so sick it was unbelievable. i thought i was going to have a heart attack and die during metallica. i kept waiting for the sky to open up and see zeus headbanging with a pitchfork, giving the goat

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 11:04 AM

nice setlist........ sweet.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 11:07 AM

Was this ATP?

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 11:07 AM

it's like Saint Vitus x 10,000....truly frightening

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 11:11 AM

PURE bullshit experience. I got KICKED out for crowd surfing! I missed Metallica and almost all of Slayer. Weak weak weak.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 11:11 AM

was the pit nasty?

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 11:15 AM

Had a great time at this. Metallica (and all the other bands) crushed Yankee Stadium. Though I woulda traded those Black/Reload/D.M. songs with ANYTHING old (especially some Garage Days Revisited or deep cuts from AJFA), it was still an amazing show. Hopefully I can afford it the next time they come around.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 11:17 AM

Next time it should be:
Rage against the Machine
Slayer
System of a Down
Deftones

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 11:24 AM

One and Blackened is not enough AJFA representation. Nice to see so many cuts from RTL though. Given their catalog at this point, that's a pretty solid mix. Wish I could have gone to this.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 11:27 AM

8:26- your bit died after the first line.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 11:29 AM

Anyone who says that Slayer is "over the hill" is disingenuous at best and retarded at worst.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 11:30 AM

I will never say anything negative about Metallica again. After using the hive-mind theory of "yeah, they suck now" I finally witnessed them live again.

Their performance last night was among the best I've ever seen, by any band, of any genre. I may never forgive them for their 90s output of albums, but they're operating on a completely different level in concert.

Slayer brought the brutality and the others, while enjoyable, were lucky to share the stage with Metallica.

Posted by Mike Owens | September 15, 2011 11:34 AM

best part of the show: NO HIPSTERS.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 11:36 AM

what the over/under on the number of women in attendance?....150?

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 11:36 AM

^ haven't been to many metal shows have you? There many women there, ass.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 11:46 AM

^^ "There many women there, ass."

Here's an example

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 11:50 AM

perhaps 2% of the women in attendance were worthwhile. the rest were/are ugly, dirty metal trash

Posted by cindy crawfish | September 15, 2011 11:53 AM

Anthrax played at 4 pm, sheeesh wtf? was it long sets or hour changovers or what? was there a curfew?

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 12:18 PM

what time did everything end?

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 12:19 PM

Regarding this comment thread. If you are one of the people saying they "killed" or "crushed" or that it was the best show ever or even saying how amazing seeing any concert at a fucking baseball stadium is then you are required to post a picture of yourself along with the comment.

Please allow the rest of us to laugh at you pathetic losers.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 12:23 PM

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 12:38 PM

Mealheads like hummus?

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 12:58 PM

Relax, 12:23. It woulda been nice, but I don't think this bill would have been feasible for Death by Audio.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 12:58 PM

@12:19 oh I'd say the whole lot ended some time in 1993. And that's being gracious 'cause I like Mustaine.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 1:04 PM

lol @ people who think that because they got photographed by a third-rate style tumblr one time they have better taste in music than people. SHUT DOWN THE INTERNET EVERYBODY

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 2:22 PM

The people bitching about the number of women at various shows remind me of the sweater- wearing, knapsack carrying Saves the Day/ Bluebird types that infested the hardcore scene in the 90's. You are not sensitive. You are not progressive. And most of all, not everyone is going to a show to get an STD from a trust fund brat "slumming it" at a club.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 2:42 PM

^this sausage is mad

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 2:54 PM

I love to go a-wondering
Upon the hummus plains
And when I go a-wondering
My knapsack on my back

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 3:03 PM

im surprised that stage could hold all those egos

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 3:14 PM

you are all retarded. the show was good, worth the price depending on where you got your tickets and where your seats were.

for those of you who didn't go, why are you even commenting? Everyone who was in attendance enjoyed Metallica's performance because it brought the crowd completely to life. This was the best Metallica show I've seen in over 15 years.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 3:30 PM

it beat the sh*t out of the woodstock riot show.. and that was pretty sick too.

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 4:05 PM

Columns of flame and fireworks for Fuel was sick. They definitely gave the bassplayer to the devil to rock for thirty plus years

Posted by TommyO | September 15, 2011 4:54 PM

3:14 hahahahaha AMZING! FTW!

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2011 6:29 PM

2:54- no, just honest.

Posted by Anonymous | September 16, 2011 12:28 AM

MAJOR dissapointment for that Motorhead "JAM" as the ENCORE...
I was hoping for AM I EVIL ??
YES I AM.....
But they did redeem themselves abit with the Next song: BATTERY
Then for the final # ; the Black balloons came flying out & instead of Hitting the Balls BACK the Crowd was DEFLATING them to keep as SOUVENIERS !!
ORION/FADE were the standouts
& Most of us are there for the MUSIC not the CHICKS obviously *** LOL
SLAYER was the BEST except they didn't do SEASONS !!
I could care less for Megadeath (HOLY WARS)
and ANTHRAX should have Played LONGER.......
