EMA @ Holoscene

"It's been a busy and exciting year for California by way of South Dakota singer/songwriter Erika Anderson, aka EMA. After leaving her longtime band Gowns, EMA began her solo career in earnest, releasing Past Life Martyred Saints. A rather long tour followed, and now Anderson is back on the road again, enchanting stages across the country. Her Thursday night set at the Holocene left little to be desired for fans, as the intimate setting, beautiful acoustics, and respectful crowd made for a satisfying end to the night. Anderson's powerful vocals filled the entire space that night, especially on tracks like "Marked," as she sang "I wish every time he touched me left a mark." Part suicidal grunge, park minimal pop, EMA not only has the talent, but the emotion of a truly special singer/songwriter, and the Holocene's warm lighting and somber patrons made for an engaging performance late Thursday night." [OneThirtyBPM]EMA (who tours with MEN & CSS this fall) shared a bill with Twin Sister at the MFNW show which is pictured in this post. It was the same night, that Archers of Loaf & Sebadoh played Crystal Ballroom, and that The Joy Formidable played Wonder Ballroom. The conclusion of our Day 2 pictures from MFNW (all featuring women who rock), below...

Ritzy! The Joy Formidable is so good live and on record. Seeing them at Webster Hall was fantastic.

I'm finally getting around to listening to the third release from Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan 'Hawk'. While I think nothing will surpass the lushness of their debut release together, this one is pretty fantastic in its own right. Have you heard it yet? I'm so bummed I missed the one show they did at Bowery.
PS (which stands for post scriptum all you non-reading Billyburger-munching kids) ... Erika Anderson is one smokin' hot chicklette.

Thank god this EMA crap faded away as quickly as it showed up. Now if only Odd Future would do the same...

The only "emptiness" that really bothers me is the emptiness of a plastic 12oz sabra container. It really brings a tear to my eye. :(

i like ema. it's not a 10.0 album but its a hell of a lot more original than most of the hype stuff these days. and what does it matter if she's hot or not? seriously, some of you guys are emotionally in the stone age...

What the hell does emotionally in the stone age mean? If you're a chick you've swallowed too much of that vapid feminist dogma. If you're a guy, well, you really aren't one.

I like Joy Formidable but find it difficult to accept her ridiculous wide eyed stare that is shown all throughout the set

For an example of 'emotionally in the stone age' - see 5:10
