Opeth @ Webster Hall
Opeth

"Swedish metal act Opeth played to a packed Webster Hall, debuting new songs from just-released record Heritage and putting new spins on old favorites.

Opeth may have started as a full-on death metal band, but recent years and albums have shown that both the band and its fans' affinity lies with the beautiful, progressive tracks that seem to pour out of frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt, and the death growls have slowly but surely been fading out of the picture, and are nowhere to be found on the new album.

The band opened with two new songs off of Heritage, The Devil's Orchard and I Feel The Dark, and the enthusiastic fans cheered wildly for the new music. Webster Hall's relatively small capacity meant that fans were crammed shoulder to shoulder, but even in the very front of the crowd, everyone was abnormally pleasant when compared to a typical rock show, and that positive energy was reflected on stage as well, the musicians all clearly vibing with one another. Åkerfeldt is an outgoing frontman, and took a break every few songs to joke with the crowd about everything from masturbation to Swedish royalty. [Examiner]

Opeth & Katatonia played their second of two shows at Webster Hall last night (9/22). Pictures from the first night, including one of their setlist, are in this post.

Their tour continues at the Trocadero in Philly tonight. Updated tour dates and more pictures below....

opeth was so sick

I like a lot of their albums but dear god, Opeth are one of the dullest live acts I've ever seen.

^ Have you been to any one of their shows before this one? Wednesday night was the first time I've left an Opeth show early ever.

Great photos. I did not attend these shows so was hoping to see some solid documentation of the band from the NYC stop. I did know in advance this was a purely acoustic and clean vocals set which I would have enjoyed but just could not work out the time to be present. I am sure it was a good time for those who could handle the non Death side of the band.

I've seen Opeth live 5 times before seeing them on the 21st in NYC, and I've never been disappointed until the last one. It felt like a yawn fest for an old-time Opeth fan like myself.

As usual Opeth did not dissappoint. I saw them Thursday 9/22. I had a blast! Katatonia was also great Live. Better than I had expected and they did a few old songs.

Those that are ONLY fans of the death growls and aggressive beats from Opeth will likely be bored. I however appreciate their diversity through their entire body of work.

Great show!
