NY Comic Con 2011

Standing in the ladies room at the Javits Center, Caity Main carefully applied her makeup before turning to a friend for advice.

"Do my eye bags look dark enough?" wondered the 23-year-old from Amherst, Mass.

Main, along with thousands of other hard-core fans in full comic book costume, packed the West Side convention center for the annual New York Comic Con.

Main and pal Liz Itaaliander took the train down from Massachusetts, bringing costumes for their characters from "Homestuck" - a comic where the characters are based on Zodiac signs.

But the dynamic duo only decided to dress up as Cancer and Virgo at the last minute.

"I'm not usually one to wear costumes in public," said Itaaliander, 23, sporting gray and green makeup with her high heels. "But when we were coming from Secaucus, we saw people on the train in costume."

The highly anticipated three-day show was sold out Saturday and Sunday. Last year's show drew nearly 100,000 people, and this year's was expected to do about the same. [NY Daily News]

Bill Cunningham>Chris La Putt

No offense Chris. Normally you rule, but when Bill C. is in the mix it is time for some gentlemen photographers to retire (for a bit)

I'm the worst costume ever comic book guy. This was so much fun. Made shaving back my hair for the costume worth it.

the cosplayers once again proved that they are probably the single best reason to go. Seriously, these guys are amazingly talented and dedicated fans and their enthusiasm was so much more gratifying than the most hyped up panels and reveals

let me tell you about homestuck

Posted by ghostdunk | October 17, 2011 2:35 AM

I like nerds of this sort. Proud nerds are way better than the ones who cluster together in places like Williamsburg and try to pretend that they're actually cool.

Posted by Anonymous | October 17, 2011 6:01 AM

Whoda thought that nerdy chicks had such epic breasts?
There are a couple twins in here I think I could get acquainted with, and one or two for which I wouldn't even need a paper bag for the head.

Posted by Anonymous | October 17, 2011 7:37 AM

dude in the first photo was not "dressed up." he goes to work like that every day

Posted by Anonymous | October 17, 2011 7:42 AM

I really wish I was into comics because this convention looks like it was so much fun!!! I am sold now, definitely want to check it out next year!

ps - this looks like it was more fun than 90% of the shows I've atttended this year....and I go to A LOT of shows!

Posted by Anonymous | October 17, 2011 9:45 AM

Excellent pictures. Who knew that there were so many hot women in attendance? Sure, some of them are probably guys, but still.

The volume and quality of the pictures are great. Your forgetting the actors and actresses that appeared at Comic Con. Also the artists.

Posted by Anonymous | October 17, 2011 3:59 PM

i've never read a comic book in my life but to people who hate on stuff like this.. this people don't look any less dumb than people who wear football jerseys on the weekend.

Posted by Anonymous | October 17, 2011 6:03 PM

Man, the best part of the convention is how repellent it is to hipster douchebags! Stay away, forever.

Posted by Anonymous | October 18, 2011 8:56 AM

I think I would wear a mask also if I was going to a convention of weird old people and might get photographed and publicized online.

If you watched more than 5 minutes of Four Tet you'd know it wasn't "knob turning". He wasn't pushing play and jumping around like a moron (looking at you John Maus). Of course, people are going to react initially to someone moving around on stage but after further inspection it's the MUSIC that matters, right?
