Polica @ Public Assembly
Polica

Polica, the current project of Channy Casselle of Gayngs, made quite an impression at the BV day party at Public Assembly on Saturday (10/22). Channy danced breezily on stage as she belted out her intricate vocals with an on-stage presence ambitious enough to fill arenas, let alone the back room of Public Assembly. She was backed by two drummers, a bassist, and some samples. I knew that the Polica album was beat-heavy but I was not at all expecting to see the interlocking percussion that the drummers provided. At times they would add to each others rhythms with complementary parts, at others they'd provide parallel executions of the same pattern by using different parts of the kit, and they also gave each other the chance to throw in fills without sacrificing the beat. Polica's set was made up of tracks from their upcoming debut LP, including the two on their website. The band are working on a video for one of those songs, "Lay Your Cards Out," and you can download a 24 second outtake clip from that video here.

Polica also played the Fader Fort and a show at National Underground on Saturday. Pictures from the BrooklynVegan day party are in this post.

Polica is about to kick off a tour with Centro-Matic, but before they leave NYC, they'll play Bowery Electric tonight (10/24) as part of the Marijuana Deathsquads and Har Mar Superstar Residency at the Manhattan venue. Fur Pillows and The Young Things are also on tonight's bill.

Channy is a robo-babe. Her moves on stage were rad.

She will be mine. Oh yes, she will be mine.

If you watched more than 5 minutes of Four Tet you'd know it wasn't "knob turning". He wasn't pushing play and jumping around like a moron (looking at you John Maus). Of course, people are going to react initially to someone moving around on stage but after further inspection it's the MUSIC that matters, right?
