Shellac

Shellac play their first of two sold-out shows with Helen Money at The Bell House TONIGHT (10/3), just a few days after playing ATP I'll Be Your Mirror in Asbury Park, NJ where Steve Albini also manned the poker tables all weekend on the 8th floor of the Berkeley Hotel. ATP pictures in this post. Steve Albini in NYC (hope he can handle it!). More pictures below...

Well they were pretty darn great this weekend , even taming the sound in convention hall. The unannounced til the morning of at Asbury Lanes was just the icing on the cake. Killer weekend !

Shellac is a total letdown. However, Todd Trainer is a monster drummer. That guy rules! Consistently has the best hair in rock, too! Bobby has made a pretty good career out of being a coattail rider. Albini's time has passed. Totally awesome, on point, and influential in the 80s. Now, he's just cranky.

@6:38 Todd Trainer is a beast!

Hey 6:38, when will your time pass?

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2011 8:05 PM

the drummer is excellent

Nowadays Albini is making sure that he is remembered for his big, opinionated mouth, not his musical career.

Risk/Reward

Fantastic weekend. Bowling alley Shellac set was awesome.

Shellac was good a few times to see especially for Todd Trainers drumming in the past, but my how the formula has stayed too stagnant with their songs.
It's kinda like eating the same boxed brownies for 15 years.

shellac playing the same setlist year in year out >>> bv commenters who would criticize the sun for rising.

Been there, done that. Same show since the 90's. Don't get me wrong- they still sound great and play all the songs well. And it's cool that people dig the music and are discovering their records, but it's essentially the SAME thing they have always been doing. Nothing new. Nothing.

Play some songs. Obtuse Q and A. More songs. Q and A. More songs. Show's over.

As a devoted fan and longtime follower, Albini's cranky NYC-bashing article hammered the last nail in their coffin for me. Putting down hard-working artists with day jobs was beyond lame and without a doubt confirmed his asshole indie-elitist status as king of bullshit.

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2011 11:39 AM

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2011 11:59 AM

is steve albini in the closet??

Posted by Anonymous | October 5, 2011 4:10 PM

I know I'm a bit late to the party here but no one here got Albini clowning NYC in that article and then wearing an obscure band from Queens' shirt on stage a couple of hours later?
