Kim & Thurston in Brooklyn - 8/12/11 (more by Dana (Distortion) Yavin)
Sonic Youth

SPIN reports the unfortunate news:

If the demise of R.E.M. didn't put the final nail in the '90s alternative-rock dream, this news sure will: Sonic Youth super-couple Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore have split up after 27 years of marriage -- and the future of the band they've played in together since 1981 is unclear.

The pair confirmed the news in a statement from their Matador Records rep that reads, "Musicians Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, married in 1984, are announcing they have separated. Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November. Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment."

Hopefully the recent Williamsburg Waterfront show wasn't the last NYC has seen of Sonic Youth.

I wish that this is resolved in love.

Posted by SD | October 14, 2011 11:19 PM

so Kim Gordon is single huh....

Posted by Anonymous | October 14, 2011 11:21 PM

haha? really? i presume you come to this site for your love of music, right? and ... a vast majority of bands on this site owe an awful lot to sonic youth, you do know that, right? so i can't tell what you think is funny. is it the fact that two people have realized after almost thirty years of marriage they can no longer continue like that and are trying to handle that with having a family to take into consideration, not to mention both founding members of their day job, or is it the fact that this will undoubtedly have some impact on a band many people have grown to love over the past 30 years.

so which of those two reasons is it that makes you such a fucking waste of space on this planet?

super sad

Posted by Anonymous | October 14, 2011 11:37 PM

Married since 1984 w/ a 17 year old daughter. This is really sad and we should all show some respect.

Only a fucking dick would troll on this thread!

11:49 - you are a fucking cocksucker. I hope you think of your mom's pussy the next time you jerk off! Asshole!

Posted by Anonymous | October 14, 2011 11:57 PM

I remember seeing the free WFMU show they did at Battery Park on July 4 a few years ago. During "Drunken Butterfly", Kim messed up on the lyrics and it was equally funny as it was pretty adorable to watch Thurston laughing and putting his arms around her. It's totally sad to see two people split after being together for so many years. (It's also selfishly sad because I've seen this band quite a few times over the past twenty years and it would be crushing to not be able to look up at the stage and see the racks and racks of beautifully fucked up guitars waiting to be played.) Wishing the whole family all the best getting through this.

Posted by Anonymous | October 14, 2011 11:57 PM

>>Jemina Pearl

agree

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 12:00 AM

Agreed. 11:49 is an asshole. It always strikes me as odd that people would use the term "hipster" to speak of Sonic Youth. Do you know anything about that band? Their roots? Do you also think Glenn Branca's guitar groups are hipster? That's where Lee and Thurston used to play pre-SY. Punk and Noise and Contemporary Classical ... all roots to their music ... do you label that "hipster" as well? Interesting.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 12:02 AM

^^
I sincerely hope that the irony of following up your righteous indignation with "piece of fucking scum. go get cancer," isn't lost on you. Otherwise, I'd have to point out that you, yourself, are a troll, as well.

Let the douchebaggery commence

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 12:08 AM

sonic youth has sucked for at least 10 years. last ok album was goo. last great album was dn. that was twenty years ago.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 12:11 AM

^ you sir or madam are an idiot.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 12:12 AM

What does any of this have to do with Phish?

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 12:16 AM

funny. they've sucked for at least 10 years? woah. so either you clearly have been living under a rock or you just don't like the band. their latest release on their own label [syr 9: simon werner a disparu] is classic sy all the way. the more noise and instrumental side of the band.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 12:16 AM

1122, 1152, 1202 -- tearfully posted by Kim's illegitimate tranny lovechild with Gavin Rossdale. There, I said it.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 12:16 AM

the term "hipster" doesn't really apply to fans of SY, more like fans of garbage like "Foster the People"

* wow *

as much as i have come to expect the snark and idiocy that often rears its head on this site, or most sites with comment boards, yet oddly this one attracts and extreme immature version ... i am indeed fairly shocked at the level of disrespect i'm seeing on this given article.

seriously, who posts here? we're talking about two adults who have a daughter and are splitting up after almost thirty years. how is that something to joke about? where on earth did you grow up and who taught you decency in life? and on top of that, who makes such heartless comments about 9/11?

i gotta say, i enjoy looking at this site on a daily basis, and i even find myself laughing at some of the snark here and there that's posted ... but come the fuck on, people. this goes beyond one of the great and influential rock bands, this is about people. grow up.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 12:36 AM

This is what I love about BV. Regardless of how lame and inappropriate the snarking is, there are always people who look like even bigger morons in how they react to it. May there be room in the cancer ward for all of you!

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 12:37 AM

It's all JOKES people.. 'It's the hipster 9/11' is clearly JUST a joke. No need to take it seriously. No one died (yet you guys still joke about death.. haha).

Jokes, guys. Jokes.

(That really does suck, though. Especially for Coco.)

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 12:38 AM

really thought this was gonna be about a split 7"

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 12:39 AM

oh yeah, hahahaha, jokes. duh, of course. you know, those of us who lived in nyc during 9/11 and all the people that died and impact on countless people, haha, yeah. gosh. you're right. jokes. dang, 9/11, good times. thanks for the reminder, bro.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 12:40 AM

"Making fun of this sad situation and also trivializing 9/11"...hahahahaha....god I hope you're fifteen.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 12:41 AM

At least Sonic Youth made it to Sonic Menopause.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 12:43 AM

Sonic Youth isn't over yet, peeps. And I say that with fingers crossed. It might take a little more time for the next album to come out, but come on. This band has been around through a lot of ups and downs so I have to believe that there will be more Matador and SYR releases. I know Lee is working on his next solo one now.

PS. Attention to some of the posters here tonight, way to keep it classy.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 12:47 AM

sy can still tour with a sep bus for thurston and sep bus for kim.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 12:53 AM

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 12:54 AM

are Thurston and Kim so sacred everyone should just cry?

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 12:55 AM

fuck u pricks making jokes about this. go back to phish comments and stay there.

sonic youth forever.

don't break up.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 1:05 AM

damn 11:22 & the rest of the super sensitive fucks in this thread need to calm down. there are plenty of issues/events in the world that need to be approached with more seriousness than two rcok stars breaking up. Guess what, there actually ARE people who don;t give two shits about Sonic Youth, and if you give them an unmoderated forum to be snarky about, they will. get over yourselves.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 1:05 AM

Maybe one day the will put apart their differences and get back to making jams the rock, lets hope at least!

Posted by Bro | October 15, 2011 1:06 AM

1:33, what does that even mean?

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 1:49 AM

I'm very sad about this. Feels like my parents split up.

Still... "hipster 9/11" is hilarious

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 1:54 AM

looking at my collection of SY CDs
listening to the songs
I cant' stop crying over this
you haters will never know true love

Posted by wowOwow | October 15, 2011 2:11 AM

"hipster 9/11" is fantastic and everyone knows it. only hipsters don't see the comedy in it because they are hipsters. thats why they're listening to Sonic Youth to begin with and would take something that is so meaningless so seriously

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 2:24 AM

"looking at my collection of SY CDs
listening to the songs
I cant' stop crying over this
you haters will never know true love"

the word "hater" means nothing...especially here. people are just making jokes...no one has even criticized either party, or the band. and even if they were, using the word "hater" is a just a cop-out to ignore critics.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 2:34 AM

20 chicken nugg for five bills > 9/11

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 2:35 AM

i really can't believe this is true. so fucking sad.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 3:05 AM

I shall hoist the goblet of rock and bid their fair romance adieu.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 3:05 AM

this like the freakin twilight zone........I can't even handle this right now.

Posted by ben srokosz | October 15, 2011 3:20 AM

honestly.......if there are any true SY fans on here....you would be begging the band to BREAK UP. The worst thing that could happen os that SY tries to GO on without these two together.

I have been obsessed with SY for over 15 years and seen them at least 11 times live and I am the first to hope that after the South American Tour they just end it.

Posted by ben srokosz | October 15, 2011 3:23 AM

It seems sort of odd they were splitting so openly being that they are both 50 plus in age, especially Kim. I suppose they are being genuine about the whole thing which has probably been over for quite some time most likely. Never understood Kim hanging out at these Marc Jacobs fashion frivolous events.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 3:57 AM

It's sad when any marriage breaks up.

Here's to better days for both of them.

12:40

Not EVERY joke is devoid of sensitive or tragic subjects. Not every joke is PG-13 and pure. NONE of the jokes, especially the hilarious 'This is the 'hipster' 9/11', are made maliciously. No one is saying, "Get it, 9/11??! Where all those people died LOL hahah Fuck yeah, Al-Qaeda!".. It's not like that. That's not the tone of the joke. You're being way too sensitive over a joke. Also, you're on the internet. Clearly this isn't a joyous matter but we're on the internet, relax yourself.

Also, I was two blocks away from Ground Zero on the morning. You don't get to tell me about 9/11.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 7:55 AM

This is extremely shattering news. Kim and Thurston always seemed unbreakable to me, and their relationship always impressed me as some sort of extremely rare, transcendent union. Maybe I'm oblivious to something everyone else knows about, and Sonic Youth have been a very important and influential fixture for nearly 20 years of my life, but I just never, ever saw this one coming. I'm broadsided.

Not one to point people out, but yes, 12:55.... they are sacred and I do feel like crying a little.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 9:17 AM

A lotta weird Kim & Thurston stalkers out there, apparently

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 9:48 AM

I wonder which one of them fucked around?

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 9:53 AM

I'm gonna jerk off thinking about them fucking for the final time.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 10:01 AM

Stop fighting. Sorry Kim and Thurston, you gave lonely indie rock fans hope for years. <3

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 10:09 AM

I heard it was because Kim wanted to switch to the open-E tuning and Thurston refused..

Posted by sonicfountainofyouth | October 15, 2011 10:15 AM

I am not that surprised about Thurston and Ira, but I would be shocked if Georgia & Ira broke up.

Remember when Caroline and Aaron of Chairlift separated? Now that was a REAL heartbreaker.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 10:59 AM

It's not in good taste to make a joke about a married couple who have been wedlocked since '84 and who have a teenage daughter. I don't care about why the 9/11 joke was tasteless or not, rather I care about wishing the best for these two. My parents split when I was 15 and I was devastated. It just fucking sucks, and there's undoubtedly a lot of emotion involved for people you have never met. You don't seem to know a whole lot about human decency. Why make a joke of this? It's not about hipsters, it's about family and humanity.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 11:14 AM

I'm sure it wasn't your fault that your parents split. Have a cookie.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 12:05 PM

As much as I have to believe people come to this site to look at the music articles and not comment like they're reading Page Six, as jaded as I can be, wow, I'm even shocked at the curt comments here. People. Kim and Thurston are in the DNA of pretty much every single band on here. Music is important to most people who read this site regardless of what kind they listen to. So really, why so snarky? I guess I fail to see the humor in two married people with child breaking up after almost thirty years and being the inspiration, both married and married-in-a-band, for countless people. I've been seeing this band live for twenty years, and yeah, it's a little sad. I hope they can work everything out.

while i don't tend to hang on p'fork's words very often, i found it poignant how this was summed up from them: So.... yeah. I no longer believe in true love.

it's not that i don't really believe in true love now. but wow. you would think that whatever storms they've weathered over the years, maybe by now would have been worked out. while they might not be well off, they're certainly not a struggling band.

oh hell. whatever the reason, this news sucks.

"It's not in good taste to make a joke about a married couple who have been wedlocked since '84 and who have a teenage daughter. "

Re-read his post. You're implying that ALL jokes should EXCLUSIVELY have a nice and friendly "PG-13" tone, which he clearly disagrees with and states that the comments in this thread are not posted with malicious intent. No one is jumping in joy over this news, but it's the internet and you will get jokes on here. You taking it seriously is a mistake.

THANK YOU for that. i saw that asshole's comment and i was thinking something along the same lines. i was living in the ev, and while i wasn't in immediate danger, i was down there the following morning volunteering after spending the entire night on the west side highway volunteering. so he can go fuck himself with the quantifying bullshit.

with regard to k & t, i'm sad about it. i love this band and hope as two adults they can work it out to find whatever the best peaceful solution may be. sometimes people get back together so all isn't lost. some of my happiest memories are at their live shows and having my eyes fixed on the racks and racks of guitars so beautifully worn and modified.

Yet I wouldn't fret if you said 'This is the hipster 9/11 to my FACE, let alone online, because I would know that you meant it in jest and it wasn't you saying that 9/11 was a beautiful day or anything of the sort. That's what I meant by 'You don't get to tell me about 9/11'. I was there, you don't have to tell me how sad or tragic or sacred it is. It's a fucking joke.

Speaking of a joke, it's hilarious to see you lose your temper.

Honestly 12:47

I love how you automatically think I'm an 'asshole'/'prick' just because I can take a joke and don't take the internet so seriously. OF COURSE it's tragic and a drag, like 12:26pm said "No one is jumping with joy over the news, but it's the internet, to be surprised with jokes ON THE INTERNET is just ridiculous.

To repeat myself
"NONE of the jokes, especially the hilarious 'This is the 'hipster' 9/11', are made maliciously. No one is saying, "Get it, 9/11??! Where all those people died LOL hahah Fuck yeah, Al-Qaeda!".. It's not like that. That's not the tone of the joke. You're being way too sensitive over a joke. Also, you're on the internet. Real shame. Like with most musical tragedies, I blame Beck. Probably filled Thurston's brain with Scientology hogwash while producing the chick-magnet soft-rock album released this year.

True story.

You'd think during that privileged upbringing Thurston had he would have at least learned the golden rule of being in a band: Don't shit where you eat. Never ever fuck someone you're in a band with! It will always end in disaster. Instead of mourning the death of the couple lets lower our pricks to half mast in honor and respect of the fact they were able to keep it together for as long as they did.

"I've made my point clear. It's hilarious to know you're getting mad on the internet."

Actually nothing you said was clear, just stupidity. The fact that you find humor and get enjoyment over someone else's sadness shows you to be quite a disgusting waste of life. But keep making snarky retorts to mask this truth.

>>Actually nothing you said was clear, just stupidity. The fact that you find humor and get enjoyment over someone else's sadness shows you to be quite a disgusting waste of life. But keep making snarky retorts to mask this truth.

exactly. thank you for that comment. i find it unbelievable that people find this reason to get snarky and cruel when at the end of the day, we're not talking about a band, we're talking about two adults with a child dealing with breaking up. remind me how that's funny again? i grew up in a family that split and it was messy. very messy. one thing it wasn't was funny.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 10:26 PM

tmz is reporting that coco saw kim go down on the pool boy. this was kim's retribution for thurston boning the violin player in his band.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2011 11:38 PM

Um ok, so Kim and Thurston's divorce.

The reason that I like this divorce so much, uh, aside from the fact that it's amazing is, um, I feel like it was kind of overlooked when it actually came out and now it's like this absolute classic divorce. But, uh, when it was actually reviewed, when it came out, it really didn't do very...I mean it did well, but it didn't do extremely well. Rolling Stone at the time gave it like..I think 2 out of 5 stars or something like that. And then when they re-released it they said it was 5 out of 5 stars, when they did the next review. But it was just a very important divorce in my formidable years and, um, it's a classic pop divorce.

Posted by Nathan | October 16, 2011 12:18 AM

They can't continue to have a musical and professional relationship in spite of their personal issues? I think you're wrong, but if one of them storms off the stage in tears during their South American shows next month I'll eat my words.

Would anyone care to explain to me what the hell the first line cited from the Spin article - "If the demise of R.E.M. didn't put the final nail in the '90s alternative-rock dream, this news sure will" - is supposed to mean?

Posted by Anonymous | October 16, 2011 10:59 AM

If '90s alternative-rock was a salad, R.E.M. would be the gravy and Sonic Youth would be the placenta.

If '90s alternative-rock was a salad, R.E.M. would be the gravy and Sonic Youth would be the placenta.

it's a fucking ridiculous title. end of story. sonic youth wasn't formed in the '90s. yeah, sure, maybe they had major label representation then, but fuck that. they were never like r.e.m. in any shape or form. sonic youth is new york city. punk. rock. noise. jazz. avant garde. contemporary classical. they've pulled inspiration from all those worlds, and that's what makes them one of a kind.

if you're still paying attention to spin, you've got more issues that worrying about what the title means.

Posted by Anonymous | October 16, 2011 2:00 PM

>>>> I never understand when people divorce in their 70's... what's the point?

70s. NOT '70s. NOT 70's.

why the fuck is that so hard for you to grasp. knowledge. try it.

Posted by Anonymous | October 16, 2011 2:01 PM

"if you're still paying attention to spin, you've got more issues that worrying about what the title means."

What title? It was a sentence. In. this. post. And thanks for the useless response. Would anyone with an IQ of over 80 like to give it a shot?

Posted by Anonymous | October 16, 2011 2:46 PM

I will happily chime in. I concur that, if you're still even remotely paying attention to what Spin reports, you're a fucking idiot.

2:01 : re-fucking-lax. "70's" was a fk up on my part, and it's funny because I almost wrote "seventies". I realize the possessive doesn't apply to a number. It's kind of cute that you're so possessive about it !

Posted by Anonymous | October 17, 2011 4:29 PM

When a person writes '70s to refer to the decade, it IS correct. The apostrophe here signifies a contraction--representing missing but implied characters, i.e. "19."

Also, Rather Ripped ruled.

Posted by Anonymous | October 17, 2011 8:33 PM

The last show I went to was at MCarren Park Pool in Williamsburg Brooklyn around 2009, they played Day Dream Nation including turning out the lights and blasting the original answering machine track where someone is telling Thurston his mind could go out the window, It was one of the best shows I ever seen as SY let the crowd know that the 10pm curfew was curious and unpunk and treated the crowd up to the last second with about 6 tracks off of the just unreleased Rather Ripped album.

Posted by StainBar | October 17, 2011 10:34 PM

Great news, finally we can expect the band members to take the next step, and stop recycling the sound they invented in the 80s.

Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2011 9:31 PM

She looks EXACTLY like a younger Kim. Typical divorce all right.

Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2011 9:34 PM

Thurstons review of her record: "ISALAJA Palaa Aurinkoon CD (Fonal): Second solo CD from Finland’s wondrous Merja Kokkonen who plays with Avarus and Kemialliset Ystavat (and on the recent US sojourn a duo with her boyfriend which had us melting into the floorboards of the Montague Book Mill). Her voice and tiny instrument prowess are from some mesmer Goddess’ breath."

I'm hoping Kim gets Everything in the divorce

Posted by Insider gossip | October 20, 2011 9:50 PM

read about THIS earlier -

a few years ago, both thurston and lee were asked to design some special edition mustang guitars for fender.
they were released to great fanfare.
well it turns out, kim was really disappointed that no one asked to put out HER guitar.
you know how she's always moaning on about women's rights and such.
well, it turns out, she wouldn't shut up about it, and finally Fender had to recall thurston and lee's guitars.
when forced to renegotiate, thurston and lee were to tell fender that unless they put out a kim gordon guitar,
than they couldn't lend their names to the brand.
fender refused, and the line was put out of production.
thurston and both lee were resentful of this ultra PC bent that kim forced them to adopt(as per usual. . ?)
this proved to be the final dividing line however, as thurston continually confronted kim about her ruining his passive cash cow,
and that her feminist PC stance on the guitars was really just masking her insecurities about her validity as a "real musician"
thurston exploited this to the point where kim eventually moved out of their connecticut home, and this led to thurston ultimately asking for
a divorce. apparently, he has met someone. wild flag ?

the mystery continues.

i saw thurston was at their(wild flag) show the other night.

stealing all tha riot grrl's hearts.

that dog.

I work closely with one of Kim's old business partners &am personally fond of the band. I wanted to know... is it really necessary to bicker &argue over somebody else's failed romance? If you think that the people who 'follow' Kim kardashian through her divorce journey are idiots, take a look in the mirror. It is their decision. If it was you, would you want everyone you know &their mother talking shit about you or just generally being annoying about it? No.

I guess this isn't interesting anymore. That's sad: the scandal got stale and all the rats deserted.

Maybe they lost their mojo, but you have a choice. Keep the classics alive. Think about your favorite Bowie period. And for God's sake, purge the word "hipster" from your vocabulary. If you read this site, you belong to the tribe. Get over it. Embrace it. You should be proud that you have good taste and care enough to express it,

I remember getting beaten up by punks. Sister came out right after I got my drivers' license. Sonic Youth made the world safe for smart kids who liked noise.

These people and their vision nurtured my hopes, dreams and expectations. More than anything, they made it seem like growing up was cool. I hope they keep in touch with us out here.
