Tony Iommi at Saint Vitus (more by Samantha Marble)
Tony Iommi

After a round of leaks and denials early this year, Tony Iommi stepped away from promoting his book for a minute today and confirmed a Black Sabbath reunion of the original lineup (Ward, Osbourne, Iommi, Butler) for an appearance at the Download Festival in the UK on 6/10/12 in addition to a new record produced by Rick Rubin (their first with this lineup in 33 years) AND plans for a world tour to follow. The announcement came at 11:11 PST on 11/11/11 along with scant details and the below video.

It figures there'd be some hipter douchebags dissing Sabbath already. I'm surprised the jerkoff hummus comments havent started yet. Tell ya what..go back to your shitty Amy Winehouse, Radiohead, your winebars and Bedford Ave and shut the fuck up.

drums and beirut rumored to be openers. killer triple bill

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 2:35 PM

Coincidentally (or maybe intentionally) this marks 42 years to the day that the greatest album in history was recorded, the first Black Sabbath album.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 2:36 PM

"3-2-1 Yawn"

If Sabbath makes you yawn, you are a giant a-hole.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 2:37 PM

Sabbath Rules!!!!! Yes, can't wait for this!

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 2:40 PM

This announcement goes to eleven

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 2:42 PM

The last time I saw Priest and Sabbath together, Halford sounded amazing, and Ozzy made me feel sad. A roadie had to lead him around the stage at one point

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 2:45 PM

the greatest metal band in history , each one is great , but togeather it cant get any better than that ever!!!! look out world...

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 2:46 PM

whats dudebro doin chillin at st vitus?

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 2:47 PM

Did any of you people who are excited for this see any of the many reunion tours they've done since 1999? Iommi and Butler are still black fucking magic but Ward can't really hit and Ozzy....well...yeah...it's painful to listen to Ozzy sing Sabbath songs now.

The reason they never vary their set list up is because there is such a small amount of songs he can still do.

I have no faith they can create anything that would come close to capturing the original lineup's recorded output. I'm going to continue to believe that the original Sabbath ended abruptly and happily after the Sabotage tour. Never Say Die and Technical Ecstasy don't exist, and they are not trying to fuck their legacy with a new record that will make Lulu sound like Master of Puppets.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 2:48 PM

I don't really know Black Sabbath beyond hearing them on the radio for many years, but I've always appreciated that Tommy Iommi doesn't "shred" but concentrates on the riff, the groove, and the overall dynamics of the song. Thank you, that is all.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 2:50 PM

Rick Rubin is horrible.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 2:52 PM

why?

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 2:56 PM

this also marks the 25th anniversary of Black Sabbath's first reunion tour.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 2:58 PM

@2:34....Amen!

Posted by FTW | November 11, 2011 3:03 PM

How is Rick Rubin horrible? He's managed to get some of the best studio work out of bands. Explain.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 3:06 PM

kind of amazing, really

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 3:09 PM

geriatric sausage solicits sausage nostalgia for one last cash grab. idiots rejoice.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 3:11 PM

rick rubin produced REIGN IN BLOOD, one of the best metal records EVER! c'mon! as for seeing black sabbath live, in 2012, even if ozzy were to doze off by the third song, it would still be worthwhile to see the band perform. that last heaven and hell tour (with iommi and butler) was the heaviest -- and accomplished -- live stuff i've ever heard.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 3:11 PM

Seriously guys, why even recognize the Rubin is horrible comment? The person who wrote that is either a troll or a moron...but a foolish a-hole regardless.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 3:14 PM

Sabbath will always be relevant...MSG dates???

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 3:16 PM

to mister no faith up above::: lets see you hit the drums for 2hrs.. or sing 15 songs ;;; or write anything other than crap about something you know nothing or little about... if you are a metal head and don't want to see the sabs , then you need to look in the mirror and figure out what your looking at.... grab that brittney cd and let it rip big guy...

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 3:18 PM

Reuben is a total scam. That whole Bodhisattva sitting under the tree act he has going is hilarious. He is just a guy with power who curates acts/records for major labels. Don't get me wrong it's a sweet gig, but that dude doesn't do shit.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 3:18 PM

word up, 3:18.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 3:20 PM

You really think Black Sabbath is "sausage music"?

Wowsers.

I never thought I would say this but ... many of you need to drop acid immediately

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 3:20 PM

Hey 3:18, I love the Tony Martin records. I'm a Sabbath apologist.

But giving Sabbath over $100 of your money to hear Ozzy decimate Hand of Doom? I've done that too many times over the last decade. No more.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 3:24 PM

Sabbath is just a SLEEP wannabe band

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 3:25 PM

Ozzy is in great health (for Ozzy) and besides Bill Ward's health problems, the band is in top form. I can't imagine this sucking...never say die!!!!

Posted by Supernaut | November 11, 2011 3:28 PM

Rubin is a whore of the corporate music zeitgeist. The guy produces the most obvious artists in the most obvious way. Glossy, in your face production with little attention to subtlety. The Michael Bay of music production. The only intelligent thing he ever did was with Johnny Cash when he simply put a mic in front of the guy and left him alone.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 3:31 PM

that's a valid argument, 3:24. these concert prices have gotten prohibitive, particularly for the big name reunions. $125+ for two hours is pretty outrageous. and that's not even a floor seat.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 3:32 PM

*jacuzzi*boys*>black sabbath

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 3:32 PM

I'll let you know how the show is! And I'll be honest.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 3:39 PM

fuck yeah! all you hipster douchebags go listen to your shitty indie rock

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 3:44 PM

If you make fun of Sabbath, you pretty much make fun of every other band out there today. Most guitarists today learned their first chords by playing at least one song by Sabbath..Iommi is a god and I for one am very excited for this reunion. Here's hoping they'll play the Garden in 2012!

Posted by Supernaut | November 11, 2011 3:48 PM

3:48 were you too young to see them at the Garden in 99 with Pantera? It was...ok, not great.

Smart money is the US tour re-launches the touring Ozzfest.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 3:58 PM

I wonder who the openers would be for black sabbath?

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 3:59 PM

Hopefully it'll just be an evening with Black Sabbath, 3:59...

Posted by Supernaut | November 11, 2011 4:00 PM

I think the openers are:
-Feist
-The pains of being pure at heart.
-Diamond rings.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 4:00 PM

I hope Ted Leo shows up

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 4:11 PM

When you think about death do you lose your breath or do you keep your cool?
Would you like to see the Pope on the end of a rope? Do you think he's a fool?

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 4:32 PM

If you're not into Sabbath, your whole life has been a complete sham. Thus concludes the Golden Statement from the Divine Being himself.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 4:33 PM

4:33...Amen

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 4:43 PM

@2:48: Who cares if Ozzy can sing the songs or if they have someone helping with vocals off stage? If you're listening to Sabbath for the vocals and not the fucking RIFFS you're doing it wrong...

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 5:00 PM

Jacuzzi Boyz love Sabbath

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2011 7:37 PM

>>t figures there'd be some hipter douchebags dissing Sabbath already. I'm surprised the jerkoff hummus comments havent started yet. Tell ya what..go back to your shitty Amy Winehouse, Radiohead, your winebars and Bedford Ave and shut the fuck up.

LOVE THIS!!!

Posted by Anonymous | November 12, 2011 1:17 AM

If Mick Jagger can still perform than so can Ozzy. Besides he's got the power of satan behind him.

Posted by Anonymous | November 12, 2011 1:55 AM

It figures there'd be some douchebags dissing Spinal Tap already. I'm surprised the jerkoff hummus comments havent started yet. Tell ya what there buddy boy..go back to your shitty Amy Winehouse, Metallica era Enter Sandman, your wineobars and Bedford Ave and shut the fuck up you poopy heads.

Posted by Anonymous | November 12, 2011 3:19 AM

Take this grab ass back to Saint Vitus

Posted by Anonymous | November 12, 2011 8:02 AM

Black Sabbath isn't Spinal Tap, you dumb cunt. Maybe one day when you stop sucking on TV on the Radio's dick you'll understand, but until then, fuck off

Posted by Anonymous | November 12, 2011 1:19 PM

Black Sabbath gets no burn on Bedford Ave.

Posted by Anonymous | November 12, 2011 1:32 PM

I'm a hummus eater, and I appreciate black sabbath. So don't stereotype me.

Hello meat head. I was watching the original Spinal Tap movie when you were in grade school you dolt. And I do like Black Sabbath just not their rock star antics especially that of Ozzy solo era.
Biting the head off a bat, snorting lines of bugs on a plane when he was on tour years ago, and countless other ridiculous things. Bark at the Moon?? Not a high point for Ozzy now is it.
Oz Fest?? Not a great bunch of neu metal bands in that stadium fest now is it.

Cant stand TV on Radio either so keep reaching.

Posted by Anonymous | November 12, 2011 6:15 PM

From what ive heard theres no hummus at oz fest

Posted by Anonymous | November 12, 2011 6:34 PM

6:15.. jealous?

Posted by Anonymous | November 12, 2011 8:02 PM

Not at all 8:02 PM. You sound rather simple minded.
So Im sure you just copy identical riffs from Iommi and pretend your some original metal dont you.

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2011 1:46 AM

Think they'll be any fat guys in black t-shirts with tattoos at this thing?

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2011 10:09 AM

I've seen this line up 3 x since New Years '98-99. They rule, Ozzy kicked ass and they are the heaviest, most epic band period. If you miss it you suck. Maybe Russian Circles, Liturgy, or Baroness is playing, go see them posers! Anyone bitching has obviously never seen Sabbath period!

Posted by Jevf | November 13, 2011 4:05 PM

Yeah like they really need the money! I hex you mother fuckers ..
