Henry Rollins @ Fun Fun Fun Fest 2011 (more by Tim Griffin)
Henry Rollins

With four stages running at the same time, it's hard to see everything at Fun Fun Fun Fest, but I did manage to catch part of Henry Rollins's Sunday night set in the Yellow Tent. He's a great storyteller and I try to catch his spoken word shows whenever I can. This time I heard him talk a bit about an encounter with Dennis Hopper and Captain Beefheart, a funny story about meeting a young Metallica, a bit about his favorite past time, traveling, and his tendency to get frisked a bit extra due to his passport having countries like Iraq stamped on it (or so he claims). He also started talking about the voice we could all of a sudden hear from the other stage that started bleeding into his. That voice was Brian Posehn who was warming up the crowd for Slayer and actually that's when I decided to leave and go listen to some of Brian.

Henry heads out on another giant tour in 2012, called "The Long March". It starts in Europe and ends in the United States. Along the way he hits places like Philadelphia and Buffalo (though no NYC this time). He plans to "share stories from the road less traveled - including recent visits to North Korea, Mongolia, Bhutan, Vietnam, India, Tibet, Sudan, Uganda, Haiti and Cuba." Maybe he'll throw in some bits like his Metallica story too. All dates are listed below...

He always sprinkles in a lot of music and pop culture stories. It isn't just travelogue.

When he was at Joe's Pub earlier in the year for his 50th birthday shows he spent half the time talking about Black Flag.

Is he going to play Cake Shop?

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2011 2:06 PM

Substituting Spoken Word for Rock and Roll is like substituting Lima beans for chickpeas in a hummus preparation. It just doesn't really work out.
So cmon Hank. Give us the phytonutrients we want!

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2011 2:49 PM

2:49 - You actually checked?

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2011 2:51 PM

Ok, Hank. We get it. The world sucks because no one is as intense as you. Today's music sucks because its not Black Flag, that you were in. You're ripped and you can beat us all up.

Now go away.

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2011 2:53 PM

it's neither fun nor funny

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2011 2:54 PM

i care and i give a shit.

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2011 3:09 PM

Are people still buying into his act? Ugh, enough already.

Rollins Band were great.

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2011 3:15 PM

When is a curator at ATP gonna get tha classic Black Flag line up to perform Damaged? It's ripe for a tour.

I am intimidated by manly dudes. I sip my drinks like an english queen.

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2011 4:11 PM

come on guys. it's fucking Rollins!!!

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2011 4:18 PM

Did any of you haters actually see/hear any of his spoken word performances? I saw him last year at Joe's Pub, and expected "intense", and instead I got insightful and funny stories about his life experiences. You people, as usual, are lame.

How does Henry like his hummus? I'm partial to the Sabra with pine nuts myself.

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2011 7:10 PM

it seems like hummus talk is back after a hiatus.

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2011 7:29 PM

Hummus never goes on hiatus. It shall forever remain like an oil stain.

(olive oil stain specifically)

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2011 8:00 PM

Henry likes to smear hummus around his coolo and let his neighbor's dog lick it off.

That's nasty, Henry. You nasty.

What possesses people to spend money to listen to Henry Rollins yap in 2012?

I gotta hand it to him, he's a hustler.

57 spoken word dates. Assuming he averages $3G a show that's $171G grossed separate from hotel, food, travel, and per diem expenses. No road crew or equipment as it's just him and his mouth, just an assistant/gofer who does all the driving.

Posted by D | March 25, 2012 5:14 PM

"What possesses people to spend money to listen to Henry Rollins yap in 2012?"

I think what possesses people to want to spend money to listen to him yap is the fact that they want to hear him yap. WHy is that such a difficult concept to comprehend?

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2012 5:37 PM

I like to hear Henry Rollins talk about those ignorant niggers

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2012 6:28 PM

5:37pm My question was rhetorical.

Again, I admire his hustle. 'Lots of dumbasses whose lives are so boring they pay $20 or more to hear a guy yap about a band he was in over 25 years ago and his musings about life from being able to lay around all day and in between his cake job spinning records.

Posted by D | March 25, 2012 6:47 PM

BTW no fucking way Rollins selects 100% of what he plays or does any physical work (like picking up records, cueing the next record etc. haha) for his radio show.

Posted by D | March 25, 2012 6:58 PM

D, stop. You've never seen or heard Rollins do one of his spoken word pieces, so stop making shit up about what it's about. He NEVER talks about Black Flag, for instance.

You need to do a little homework. Maybe take $5 of your $37 hourly wage and get Boxed Life off of eBay or something. I mean at least make an effort.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2012 8:17 PM

@8:17
That is not D. Not the real D, anyway. His posts are way too short, and he's not condescending enough.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2012 8:20 PM

8:17pm

1. I don't have to see Rollins do spoken word cuz I've heard recordings of it. I don't get it i.e. people paying what they pay to hear him talk. He lies around all day and then spins records. The guy hasn't had a real job in many, many years. He thinks, reads, writes, and observes alot, and of course he would when he has all the time in the world to. When you can stay up and sleep in as late as you want you're full of it.

Now I'm making only $37/hr. down from $38/hr. You're downgrading my pay, stalker.

2. He talks about Black Flag and what does 1:59pm have to gain by lying about him talking about the band?

3. The ONLY reason he is a spoken word artist is cuz he was a musician and more specifically played in in SOA/Black Flag/Rollins Band with WarTime during the last one and BF being his most famous one. Anything and everything he talks about will be in some way however small shaped by his days in Black Flag when he was in his early to mid 20s, a formative time in life, so in a sense he is talking about BF even when he isn't.

Posted by D | March 25, 2012 8:28 PM

8:20pm I'm merely sending it back. Go cry about it somewhere else. And you're probably 8:17pm, too, cuz funny how you reply to 8:17pm just three minutes later.
