Jay-Z & Kanye West @ the Izod Center in NJ (cohanlon64)
thronenj.jpg

Kanye West & Jay-Z aka The Throne played their first of two shows at the Izod Center in NJ last night (11/5), and they do it again in the same location tonight, and then two nights in a row at MSG...

"The core of the show weaved together separate, alternating sets from Jay and Kanye. This especially benefitted Kanye, whose recent albums, and last tour, got bogged down in fodder. Here he culled the cream, from the strident gospel chorus of "Jesus Walks" to the gothic "Power." Jay-Z, the more consistent performer, drew on his wealth of favorites, from the stuttering "Jigga What" to "Hard Knock Life." The pair doubled up on that last one and others, together offering not just value for money, but a survey of recent commercial hip-hop at its height." [Daily News]
Last night's setlist is below.

Odd Future associate and Watch The Throne guest vocalist Frank Ocean plays his first NYC show at Bowery Ballroom tonight (11/6), part of a short tour that hit New Orleans last night, Frank's first-ever show...

"The show was his first solo performance, and it was truly solo--he was onstage alone with backing tracks on a laptop.

Ocean's system still had a kink or two. "This is awkward," he said quietly when the video screen behind him started showing footage from western movies without audio. That problem was quickly solved, and having his band on computer didn't limit him in any obvious ways.

Song lengths never felt shorter than what the moment demanded, and he wasn't locked into a pre-programmed sequence. Ocean changed the set list on the fly, gesturing for his offstage computer tech to skip forward more than once. He solved the problem of not having a lead guitarist to play the solo at the end of "American Wedding" by strapping on a Guitar Hero controller, turning his back to the audience, and apparently playing along as the video game's footage for "Hotel California"--the song's key sample--ran on the video screen. "I've always wanted to do that," Ocean said afterward." [Rolling Stone]

When Frank's NYC show was first announced, it seemed like maybe he would make it to NJ for at least one of the Izod Throne shows. We know now that didn't happen/isn't possible. Since then the MSG shows were announced though, so maybe Frank will pop on stage in NYC on Monday and Tuesday.

Odd Future (obviously without Frank and vice versa) co-headline Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin tonight. We hear there will be no photopit.

"This is awkward,"

The last few songs are incorrect. It went Niggas in Paris-->Niggas in Paris--> ENCORE: Niggas in Paris-->Encore. They played Made in America earlier on.

Was at the concert - setlist is wrong. They didn't play Murder To Excellence or Why I Love You at Izod (as much as I wish they did). Daily News just copied and pasted their setlist from another night and you just copied and pasted from there...

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 8:52 AM

Amazing show!

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 8:59 AM

Amazing would be a bitch slap throwdown between these two posers. Not this self-important reach around they are doing here. Go jerk yourselves off in Japan or something, you twats.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 9:28 AM

Agreed, this shouldn't be on brooklynvegan. Next there will be "reviews" for Nicki Minaj and Justin Beiber too? White apologists gotta find a new schtick.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 9:50 AM

Aw, snap! 9:50 gonna make it racial.
$20 says that 9:50 is from Wisconsin and is whiter than Pat Boone.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 9:56 AM

lol 956am clap clap clap hahaha that made me laugh.

950 started reading bv this month. idiot. if you want to read about bieber go read yahoo or some shit.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 10:28 AM

9:50 doesn't realize that it's possible for music to be both popular and of high quality, thus meriting a post on this blog. grow up with your hipster 'too obscure for you' shit.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 10:41 AM

Somethin wrong, I hold my head,
Niggas in Paris, hip-hop is dead.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 11:09 AM

Since when does this blog only post about good music? Anyway, these dudes have more talent than 90% of the artists that get write-ups on this site.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 11:11 AM

Illuminati meet up?

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 11:16 AM

Kanye is Pitchfork-approved, so it's ok for BV to post about them.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 11:16 AM

Assolutely

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 11:26 AM

@11:11 truth. When's the last time any of the bands on this site played a show important enough to have a post with the set list? Think about it.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 11:29 AM

I got free tickets for last night from the record company. The show was so incredibly less than amazing. The mongoloids on here saying it was unreal should never be allowed to opine about any show ever.
Typical crappy hip hop concert. Kanye without a band felt empty. Sound in the arena was terrible. You know the drill.

Feel sorry for those that paid. And for the person above asking. Many many tickets available outside the venue. Not just the traditional scalpers but lots of people walking around trying to sell. Easy fire sale to get cheap tickets for a good seat. I have no doubt it will be the same at MSG.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 11:39 AM

The racist "jokes" on this thread really suck. BV has really gone down the tubes. Not because they're covering major hip-hop acts, but b/c there's a new crop of immature commenters who post racist, homophobic and/or misogynistic comments & think they are funny.

Posted by M | November 7, 2011 12:03 PM

BV needs to start a site dedicated to bottle service clubs for people who enjoy this type of music/lifestyle.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 12:21 PM

Honestly, I think there's a line with racist/homophobic comments. I personally think it's okay to call something "gay," call someone a "homo," or call something "black."

When you start making grape soda/slavery/holocaust jokes then it's definitely gone too far.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 12:26 PM

BALL SO HARD

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 1:16 PM

Awesome...black guys talking into a mic

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 5:11 PM

What she order? Fish fillet with a side of hummus and some grape soda.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 9:38 PM

Okay, real question - what are hte best seats in the house for this show? because it looks like the stage setup is all weird and they're like playing in the middle of the crowd and shit. can someone who went to the MSG show tonight (monday) look at the floor plan and tell me what sections (and rows) would be the best?

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 10:53 PM

2:30 - Crazy, right? I love that Jay Z's target market has become rich entitled white people. I went to the show, and the only black people there were Jay Z, Kanye, and the cleaning crew.

Posted by Anonymous | November 8, 2011 7:15 AM

7:15 - bitch, the Jay-Z and Kanye demographic has always been white suburban idiots like yourself. They were never "hard" or "underground". But no problem, there is no way that you could know that from Des Moines.

Posted by Anonymous | November 8, 2011 7:45 AM

7:45 - Jay Z's demo was "urban" back in 1996, when I first started listening. I'm black from Brooklyn, BTW.

Posted by Anonymous | November 8, 2011 9:46 AM

@946 yea i'm sure your black, given your racist comments about the cleaning crew...

Posted by Anonymous | November 8, 2011 9:51 AM

Speaking of racist...

Posted by Anonymous | November 8, 2011 10:20 AM

I would love it if one of the stipulations of getting a Jay Z ticket, would be that you must hang out in Marcy projects overnight.

Posted by Anonymous | November 8, 2011 10:30 AM

Yeah I love me some black cock, in mah mouf

Posted by Anonymous | November 8, 2011 11:50 AM

@1030 unfortunately the real stipulation is that you must have seen Martha Marcy May Marlene #concertforwhitepeople

Posted by Anonymous | November 8, 2011 1:42 PM

I would love to meet the jackasses that pay over $1000 a ticket.
I picture them to be the same jackasses that pay $400 to buy a bottle of crappy Absolut, so that they can get into a club that they normally couldn't get into because they are ugly and showing up with a bunch of other dudes.

Posted by Anonymous | November 8, 2011 4:21 PM

uhm u guys seem really cool and all with yr weird hatred towards concerts you dont even wanna go to, but ima go 2 this and have a great time for all u negativedivas

Posted by Anonymous | November 8, 2011 5:10 PM

5:10 Hope you enjoyed the show, and I hope you didn't have to sell your spleen to get tickets. Me personally, for those prices, I would expect a blonde under my seat.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2011 8:40 AM

they go well together.
