a ticket to see Jeff in Jersey City (via Deanna Cannonball)
Mangum

"Jeff Mangum's two sold-out shows at the Loew's Jersey theater in Journal Square on November 5 and 6 resembled a church service more than a rock concert.

The 1,500-strong audience sat quietly throughout both performances; the artist sat too, lit from above, on a bare stage flanked by four acoustic guitars. The audience applauded politely after each song; sometimes they clapped as the familiar chords of some cherished old favorite began, too. Once or twice -- following Mangum's earnest entreaties -- the crowd attempted to sing along, although even that sounded more like hymns in a cathedral than generational anthems at a big rock show.

Worship may be too strong a word to describe the relationship between Mangum and his fans, but barely so." [Jersey City Independent]

The rebirth of Jeff Mangum continues. After playing two sold out shows at Loew's in Jersey City over the past two nights, even more dates have been announced for the Neutral Milk Hotel frontman, and they include New Haven, Brooklyn, Philly, and a rescheduled UK ATP. Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 3:03 PM

There were a bunch of scattered seats last night.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 3:07 PM

So how was Jersey City fellas? Nice neighborhood for some white folks to live?

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 3:07 PM

you've seen one pic of him you've seen them all , not much changes when he plays.. I was happy to be at a show where people actually paid attention rather than played with their phones all night

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 3:09 PM

cha-ching

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 3:09 PM

the venue was gorgeous though. would have loved just a pic of the theater

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 3:10 PM

...setlist?

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 3:11 PM

this dude is definately MILKing it

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 3:11 PM

both setlists are in the Jersey City article that is linked!

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 3:13 PM

Show was really good, theater was beautiful. From a comment Jeff made It seems the whole band will be playing at some point. They also had a lot of merch. This is no longer just a special couple of shows, but a full blown thing. Get ready to get an over-saturation of NMH in 2012.

Show was great last night, though it was a bummer not hearing "Engine".

Also, I was pretty pleased with the crowd. People were sitting in their seats, having inane conversation during Scott Spillane (which was unfortunate, since The Gerbils are a great band), but they at least kept their fucking mouths closed during Mangum's set. I'll take what I can get with a NYC/NJ audience.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 3:26 PM

this is so exciting i want to fall asleep

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 3:27 PM

Outside of NYC area these are all cities he hasn't even played yet.
The dude said several times he was going to tour the US and thats what he is doing... Plus who doesn't like to see shows at BAM ?

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 3:31 PM

Much different show than Town Hall. More gregarious, and seemed to let audience requests dictate the setlist, or at least the order. Well, he did play Two Headed Boy instead of Engine by request.

Worst part of the Jersey show- While the venue itself was gorgeous, if in a bit of disrepair- you can definitely tell it was made in/for a different time. The stupid bathroom (there was only one) only had one sink. So there was a line at the mens room(!), then a line for the sink. Sadly, and grossly, the line for the sink was not 1-1 proportional to the line for the bathroom.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 3:33 PM

@3:33 - It is idiots like you that I am glad that will never return to the Loews. It is a wonderful theater and is one of the better locations to spend a weekend seeing a classic film in an incredible environment. Please continue to stay away and cry about poor bathrooms elsewhere.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 3:37 PM

I just wizzed in my empty milk duds box. Didn't want to get up during "Oh Comely."

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 3:39 PM

@3:37, I sure hope 3:33 actually does return to Loews sometime and just ruins the whole thing for you!

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 3:50 PM

he played both 'engine' and 'two-headed boy' in NJ on saturday night. 'little birds' too.

so what'd sunday get that saturday didn't get? must've been something.

3:50: LOL!

Mancum FTL

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 4:25 PM

@3:37- Why does complaining about the bathrooms make me an 'idiot'? I said the venue was gorgeous. I never said I wouldn't go back. But I'm sorry if my complaining about there being only one sink for the men's room (with one out of two working faucets) in a 3000 seat venue somehow offended you personally.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 4:31 PM

I hate shitty bathrooms. That's why every time I hang out at Welcome To The Johnsons, I piss on a hipster instead of going into that disgusting lavatory.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 4:42 PM

@3:33 is Mangum

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 4:48 PM

greatest show ever! worked as a volunteer and got to meet him, his dog and his wife

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 5:09 PM

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 5:11 PM

I went on Saturday and got really close seats, went to my wedding late, wish i missed the whole wedding #noregrets

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 5:13 PM

I've met his guinea pig and his goldfish. They're both named Cletus. I found this odd, because they wouldn't know which one he's calling and that's a lotta stress to put critters under.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 5:16 PM

um no, is guinea pig is named Jesus Christ. he wrote that sound about it.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 5:39 PM

occupy jersey!

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 5:46 PM

Don't know who wrote that but the vibe was not churchlike - people were cheering, applauding, shouting requests and throwing a few questions to Jeff - not obnoxious but not solemn. It was just a fun show, emotional but not spiritual. Set was about the same, plus little birds (amazing) ferris wheel on fire and Scott came put to play what I think was the very last song off of Avery island. Can anyone confirm?

And yeah, nice place but the bathrooms were disgusting. One side for urinals and one for stalls? WTF?

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 5:47 PM

Does anyone know the name of the first song Scott Spillane played?

Posted by griph | November 7, 2011 6:18 PM

Also, Scott came out for "April 8th", which is the second-to-last song on On Avery Island.

Posted by griph | November 7, 2011 6:21 PM

Guys, I just found this awesome website BrooklynBathroom.com that is really up-to-date and addresses some of these very issues that affect us all so much!

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 6:32 PM

Thank goodness for BAM. If he played Willy Burg that would be an insult

Jeff is too cool for fauxhemians

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 7:03 PM

Love the bathroom commentary. And I'm sure all of the bathrooms are glamorous in the shitty DIY Todd P venues. Continue to stay away from the Loews you damn trolls.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 7:41 PM

lol. what a bizzarre thing to be offended by. what sort of weird attachment do you have to public restrooms?

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 7:56 PM

I had 2 sun tickets and didn't go. I thought it would be boring.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 8:03 PM

@803 ...then why did you buy the tickets?

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2011 8:05 PM

Anywhere in the city, I'll tell you the best public toilet.
