Bon Iver

Since we're starting with the lists already, might as well point out this fun one from Chicago's Jim DeRogatis who writes stuff like:

"This is what happens if you cross the insufferably cute Zooey Deschannel with the Natalie Portman of Black Swan," I wrote in my original review. But that sounds way more interesting than the actuality of this bad modern Disney soundtrack.
That was in reference to St. Vincent's new one. Jim's complete list of what he believes are the top 10 turkeys released in 2011, below...

---
The biggest turkeys of 2011
1. Lou Reed & Metallica, Lulu (Warner Bros.)
2. Bon Iver, Bon Iver (Jagjaguwar)
3. Bjork, Biophilia (One Little Indian/Polydor)
4. Coldplay, Mylo Xyloto (Capitol)
5. Lady Gaga, Born This Way (Interscope)
6. Adele, 21 (XL/Columbia)
7. Art Brut, Brilliant! Tragic! (Downtown)
8. P.J. Harvey, Let England Shake (Vagrant)
9. St. Vincent, Strange Mercy (4AD)
10. Drake, Take Care (Cash Money)

Check his blog for the explanations.

Bjork and Coldplay don't belong on this.

Note that these aren't the worst albums period (well, #1 maybe) - they're the worst albums for which he had high expectations.

Posted by Paul | November 28, 2011 8:49 AM

DeRogatis is an asshole, but I agree with the majority of this list.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 8:58 AM

Wow! I think PJ Harvey might have released the best album of 2011. Not one of this year's turkeys IMO

Posted by Dan | November 28, 2011 9:03 AM

Who is Jim DeWhazzit, and why should I give a flying fuck what he has to say about anything?

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 9:06 AM

DeRogatis is right

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 9:15 AM

you know how i know you're gay?

you back up coldplay on a top ten turkey list

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 9:18 AM

Stereogum already used this list to create a troll-bait hit-generating topic.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 9:20 AM

Bjork went to the bathroom this morning....what she flushed down the toilet had more talent than DeRogatis.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 9:30 AM

Why is Jim D not #1?

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 9:32 AM

A top 10 turkey list without King of Limbs on it?

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 9:34 AM

St. Vincent... really?

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 9:52 AM

stereogum may have already done this, but jimmy D would fit right at home with the people in this comment section! he is the king of us trolls. it at least deserves a BV shout out

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 9:53 AM

Ahhhh I forgot all about King of Limbs. A very forgettable album.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 9:56 AM

Yeah, really? Go listen to it again. It has more talent than a Bjork toilet flush.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 10:08 AM

Jim DeRogatis is a pretty huge turkey himself

Posted by Dave | November 28, 2011 10:09 AM

King of Limbs is good, it's just hard to get into (and sounds a big In Rainbows-y at times). But Lotus Flower, Codex, Magpie, and all that crap are very good songs (I personally LOVE Codex, it's like Radiohead meets Sigur Ros).

Lady Gaga, Adele, Bon Iver, St. Vincent, and Drake clearly shouldn't be on this list.

Everyone loves the Adele album, reviewers and listeners alike. Same with St. Vincent's LP.

Drake's LP is being lauded as a 'masterpiece,' which granted is a big stretch, but still, not disappointing. I hate Drake and even I like his new CD. That Rihanna track produced by Jamie XX is bangin.

Posted by boosh | November 28, 2011 10:17 AM

DeRogatis is right

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 10:20 AM

Anyone who was expecting quality music from Lady Gaga is a turkey. First album was like a gay-pride parade burnt onto a compact disc, what'd you expect from the second? 'Born This Way' delivered, as far as I can tell.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 10:22 AM

Regardless about any other aspect of this list, I'm pretty sure we can all agree that DeRogatis was dead on with #1. Lou Reed & Metallica = AWFUL COLLABORATION!

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 10:23 AM

"First album was like a gay-pride parade burnt onto a compact disc"

hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Posted by jro | November 28, 2011 10:23 AM

The Strokes Angles was a very ugly disappointment as well.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 10:26 AM

Lulu was a piece of shit, sure. But it was a concept album. Were people really expecting them to spark and create pop-metal or something? I don't expect much from Lou Reed anymore, because I've listened to his past 4 or so albums and they all sound like NYC at 2AM on bad acid.

I also don't expect much from Metallica anymore, because I have common sense.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 10:26 AM

"I've listened to his past 4 or so albums and they all sound like NYC at 2AM on bad acid."

so true....

Posted by Raiders Fan | November 28, 2011 10:27 AM

this list is flawless.

Jimbo needs to stop hitting the crack pipe
Unless he's just trying to be a douche (which I have not dismissed)

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 10:40 AM

St. Vincent is so fucking boring.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 10:41 AM

this is garbage, st vincent? i think that was her most compelling record yet. the rest i could give two shits about.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 10:41 AM

i just don't get how he justifies st. vincent being on there. his explanation isn't even rational (disney soundtrack? what the hell?)

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 10:47 AM

I think he's going too easy on the St. Vincent record. makes me envious of deaf people.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 10:59 AM

Lulu is among the worst things I've ever heard....and its still better than King of Limbs. Radiohead is awful.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 10:59 AM

This list includes the year's worst albums, as well as at least two of its best.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 11:12 AM

how DARE you throw shame on the sacred ms. clarke. jim derogatis, you just declared war on the mother fuckin' billyburger eatin' crew. bitch.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 11:14 AM

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 11:20 AM

ah, billyburger boy is back.
have a nice vacation, nancy?

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 11:25 AM

No Ryan Adams ?!?!?!

Posted by kyle | November 28, 2011 11:25 AM

DeRogatis is spot on with this list!

My own minor objections: half of the new PJ Harvey LP (her new "little girl" voice is really awful) & maybe the new St. Vincent LP.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 11:29 AM

The entire world agrees that the Adele album is powerful and her talent is unabashed. This guy is a twat. Bet that the Twin Sister album makes his Top 10.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 11:43 AM

pretty sure no one cares what this guy thinks

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 12:25 PM

Thanks 12:32
As I thought, a wannabe hipster douchenozzle if'n ever I seen one

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 12:38 PM

I never got the hipster vibe, though he is an old fat punk drummer. As much as I agree with a lot of this list, and him in general sometimes, he always has spurts of 'bitter, failed because he's too fat/ugly/probably musician' in ripping apart decent bands.

Jim DeLOL

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 12:43 PM

"hacky Coldplay humor," I wrote in my original review. But let me add kinda-timely sitcom references and Bjork/PJ/Reed debunkings that would have seemed dated in 2002.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 12:44 PM

1st Bon Iver album - Loved it

2nd Bon Iver album - should issue an instrumental version to be played in waiting rooms of hip dentists.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 12:47 PM

1st Bon Iver album - written in a remote cabin in the woods.

2nd Bon Iver album - written on an 80's-inspired yacht.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 12:49 PM

The blog says this is a list of albums that failed to meet expectations. Why is Coldplay on here? A Coldplay album influenced by graffiti art? Who expected that to be good?

Posted by Doc | November 28, 2011 12:51 PM

DeRogatis is right

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 1:03 PM

Do I really need some fat dude from Chicago to tell me that I shouldn't buy the Coldplay or Lady Gaga record ?

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 1:08 PM

Any Strokes release has been a disappointment

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 1:09 PM

Doc, VLV isn't terrible and Eno was back on this one, so maybe the expectation was that it wouldn't suck as much as it does...?

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 1:09 PM

..and that a Lou Reed / Metallica collaboration was off the mark..

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 1:10 PM

Coldplay has always sounded like are striving to be brunchwave but can't just do it right.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 1:13 PM

>> ah, billyburger boy is back.
have a nice vacation, nancy?

actually ... yes. your mother, father and i had a lovely trip out west. we ate at in-n-out burger and all agreed that i paled in comparison to our favorite billyburg treat of choice.

thanks for asking, chump.

Lulu will be good in another 3 years.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 2:23 PM

It's not as though any of those records are mind-blowing.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 2:29 PM

he sure listens to a lot of shite, no?

Posted by nygrump | November 28, 2011 2:33 PM

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 3:02 PM

bon iver sucks souls cause his own got sucked out....what?

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 6:07 PM

not that any of the albums on that list are particularly good, but this guy is a total fatass piece of shit

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2011 7:20 PM

This list includes only the worst albums of all time.

Posted by Rede de proteção | November 28, 2011 8:26 PM

"My own minor objections: half of the new PJ Harvey LP (her new "little girl" voice is really awful) & maybe the new St. Vincent LP."

I wouldn't say it's "awful", but yeah, I'm not too crazy about it either. Still a nice album though.

Haven't heard the St. Vincent LP.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2011 10:33 AM

Bon Iver lp is quite good.
He's just a jealous FIB who can't stand the fact the Packers are so much better than his Bears.

Posted by Darnell | November 29, 2011 4:44 PM

Lulu will be good in another 3 years.

Posted by Redes de proteção | November 29, 2011 7:48 PM

I dont get all the Bon Iver 2nd album hate. 1st one was was a totally different concept and place Vernon was in. and yeah, he autotuned the shit out of the 2nd record. so what..

those songs come alive when he performs with his full band. anyone who has seen Bon Iver live can attest to that.

its laughable that they are on this list.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2011 11:40 PM

Auto tune sucks, that's so what.

Posted by Anonymous | November 30, 2011 12:00 AM

Lulu is the most misunderstood album of the year.

Posted by Anonymous | November 30, 2011 4:15 PM

yeah just like Lindsey Lohan is "misunderstood"

Posted by Anonymous | November 30, 2011 4:45 PM

I doubt you're smart enough to understand it, 4:45.
