Rock Lottery

The Rock Lottery began in Denton, TX in 1997 (and in Seattle in 2006). This will be Brooklyn's second annual Rock Lottery. The premise is simple, but effective. Twenty-five hand picked musicians meet at 10:00AM at the evening's performance venue. These volunteers are organized into five groups through a lottery-based chance selection. The five separate groups are then released to practice at different locations. The musicians have twelve hours to create a band name and three to five songs (with a one cover-song limit). The groups will then perform what they have created that evening in front of a waiting audience.
This goes down Saturday, 11/19, at Knitting Factory with names like Liam Finn, Britta Phillips, Yuki Chikudate of Asobi Seksu, Greg Saunier of Deerhoof, Dan Friel & Billy Jones. More listed below...

britta hot, this idea/event dumb

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2011 1:13 PM

WHO ARE THESE BANDS?

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2011 1:13 PM

Oh ow oops! I will not be in the Rock Lottery this Saturday! I will be playing a gig in Portugal. My sincere apologies to everyone for this. I thought it was next month when I signed on.

Best,

Britta

then don't go. you should probably stay home and comment on message boards...

^don't worry, Britta's out, and there goes the one possible reason to attend this gimmick event.

This was a blast last year - can't wait for Saturday!

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2011 2:08 PM

Sounds really cool. A bunch of my favorite bands!

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2011 2:19 PM

Cool idea. I'm in...and for charity??

Posted by Debs | November 16, 2011 2:21 PM

Totally Stoked! And what an awesome lineup!!!

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2011 2:21 PM

2:19, 2:21 #1 & 2 are obviously the promoters. None of the people participating are in anybody's favorite bands. Art is not pickup basketball, and this is a dumb gimmick. Try harder.

Hey! Look at me! I sit in my parents basement and post negative comments on every BV post all day long cause my opinion matters more than anyone else's and I have to let the whole world know cause then I'll feel great about myself! I don't make music, book shows, or help the scene in anyway... I just tell bands and promoters that they suck because I'm jealous that I can't get off my ass to do anything worth a shit with my life. LOVE ME LOVE ME LOVE ME.

I loved this last year, really cool to see random musicians get together and make some cool tunes. Jon from Bear In Heaven was so amazing!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2011 2:32 PM

2:04 I don't understand why you call this a gimmick?

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2011 2:32 PM

last year was BAH NAN NAS, B A, N A, N A, S
Seriously, i can't wait for this year. Can Rainbone come back and play a reunion? Or can Bear in Heaven John just bring his mustache back?

Posted by Harry Nillsson | November 16, 2011 2:34 PM

Sounds like fun! Great concept.

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2011 2:35 PM

@2:34 yes! Rainbone! Are there videos of that somewhere?

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2011 2:46 PM

2:26 is obviously the coolest person on the planet. please tell us more about "art." it's a fun event for a good cause. Really this is how you want to spend your energy? posting snide comments about a charity event on a message board? Talk about "dumb."

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2011 2:49 PM

2:25 is obviously a dick too afraid to reveal their identity. Talk about trying harder. When does it matter that artists are from “everyone’s favorite band”? I agree with 2:31. Sounds like a Nickelback loving loser-douche from LA to me. This event is a great idea, meant to foster the collaboration between genuinely talented artists - no matter the roster of their career (which, given Saturday's lineup, shouldn't be questioned in the first place). Hey 2:25, why don’t you grow a pair! Better yet, do everyone a favor: Put in your earbuds, crank up the Creed, and take that long needed walk off of one of those short piers in the east river.

so psyched for this, it was awesome last year and i'm sure it will be again!

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2011 3:15 PM

haha, the promoter is mad. You shouldn't try so hard. I mean when you have a member of Gay For Johnny Depp involved, the event should sell itself.

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2011 3:30 PM

So a bunch of people put on a gimmick rock show and then get upset when someone points out that it is, in fact, a gimmick. Makes perfect sense.

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2011 3:40 PM

^yeah pretty much. My favorite part is "Twenty-five hand picked musicians..." ha, yeah more like 25 people we could get to agree to do it.

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2011 3:44 PM

this was actually fun last year. wonder if they'll have comedians again.

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2011 4:16 PM

Rainbone!!! What an awesome show that was. TOTALLY going again this year...so glad it's at Knitting Factory again too!!!

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2011 4:22 PM

This is a total rip off of 1988s Hummus Lottery where 25 Lebanese men showed up with food processors to make their finest platter.

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2011 4:32 PM

i LOVE Hummus

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2011 4:38 PM

this is going to be like when zep played the garden in 72.

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2011 4:41 PM

In honor of those fine Lebanese women (and their culinary delights), I propose that the first RL band don the name: "Hummus". Anyone? Anyone?

Posted by seexual | November 16, 2011 4:43 PM

This is AWESOME!!! So glad it's coming back again this year!
