Hubert & Elvis Costello @ Wellmont Theater- 10/6/11 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Hubert Sumlin

Hubert Sumlin put the bite behind Howlin' Wolf.

And he then influenced a new pack of electric blues and rock guitarists.

Mr. Sumlin died Sunday in a hospital in Wayne, N.J., reportedly of heart failure. He had turned 80 on Nov. 16. Mr. Sumlin was best known as lead guitarist for Howlin' Wolf (Chester Burnett) from 1953 until Wolf's death in 1976.

This was no small feat. The combustible guitar parts in Wolf's big-voiced tracks -- "Smokestack Lightning," "Spoonful," "Ain't Superstitious" -- set Wolf on fire at Sun Records in Memphis and later at Chess Records in Chicago. [Sun Times]

Rest in Peace Hubert.

Check out a video of Hubert performiung with Elvis Costello in NJ just two month ago ("In recent years Mr. Sumlin relocated from Chicago and then Milwaukee to Totowa, N.J.), and more, below...

Beyond influential, we all owe our left nut to what he did.

RIP my brother.

Some of the best shows I've ever been to were the annual Howlin' for Hubert birthday shows at BB King's and Jazz Standard. What a great guitarist.

He had so many great licks but just a spoonful is good enough for me.

beyond influential indeed. and guitarists like marc ribot took what he did and allowed that to influence new ways of playing. along the lines of it's just as important what you don't play as what you do. it's too bad not enough of the billyburger/bedford/les crowd aren't listening to more of the recordings he did. the would understand. but then again, they would have to learn how to play their instruments and not just stand there trying to look cool first.

so not true 10:52. there are times I use my fuzz plugin, and times I hit the space bar to suspend the sequencer just to not play as you say.
