Yo La Tengo @ Maxwell's, Hanukkah 2007 (more)
YLT

Yo La Tengo, despite a scary health scare for Ira, will begin their eight nights of Hanukkah shows tonight at Maxwell's. Part of the fun is of course figuring/finding out who opens each show, and who the special guests and comedians are/will be. Any ideas?

So far it looks like the recently reunited Glands are visiting from Georgia to open the Christmas Eve show! You might remember that Yo La Tengo opened for them at Mercury Lounge in November.

Any other guesses? Who's definitely in from out of town? Marianne Faithfull? Dum Dum Girls? Who lives here or close to here that seems like maybe they could stop by? Titus Andronicus? Ted Leo? Kurt Vile? Thurston Moore? These are all just guesses... stay tuned for more as the week goes on.

100% speculation, but Jim James has shown up before (as a special guest for the encore), and MMJ was recently in town.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2011 12:04 PM

Pussy Galore is likely.

Note to 11:10am regarding who supposedly buys up all the tickets. Sorry to rain on your fever dream, but a lot the audience, if you haven't noticed, are codgers who are actually from NY and NJ. Some of us enough spare change to risk buying enough tickets for friends who might wanna go and/or pick and choose among nights and/or remain flexible for family/holiday responsibilities which might actually involve Chanukah (and sometimes Chanukah and Xmas) and our kids, as well as parents. I'll be bold and guess we outnumber the 27 year old WASPs with the Jet Blue points.

Posted by noisejoke | December 20, 2011 12:07 PM

Sonic Youth did not break up.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2011 12:12 PM

12:12 You're right, they just stopped touring, playing shows, and making public appearances at almost exactly the same time that the couple split. Call it what you want.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2011 12:14 PM

The opening act on the 27th is the Kim and Thurston custody battle

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2011 12:14 PM

comedian on the 22nd is defini ted alexandro, it's on his website http://www.tedalexandro.com/.

as far as tickets go, you're exactly right noisejoke. also, i've been on both sides and never found it particularly easy to buy or sell tickets for these shows. who in hoboken wants to go and who wants to come from ny without a ticket and risk not getting in. it's not impossible to find one, but it can be a long cold wait.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2011 12:15 PM

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2011 12:15 PM

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2011 12:17 PM

at least i have the good fortune of not giving a flying fuck about any of these shows

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2011 12:18 PM

Let's try that again:

Many YLT Chanukah week ticket buyers are native to the area and OLD. They buy many tickets to ensure a choice among the shows based on their preferences and possible holiday responsibilities, as well as to offer to friends. Therefore, as the week progresses many of these tickets will be offered for sale on Craigslist as well near Maxwells.

I wouldn't suppose "Brooklynites" are hanging around out front to ditch their tickets sweating their boarding time at Newark.

Posted by anonymous fuck | December 20, 2011 12:20 PM

Sonic Youth did not break up.
About two weeks after the Thurston and Kim separation was announced, Sonic Youth played several shows in Central and South America. One of them was even broadcast on tv and linked here.
Lee Ranaldo has stated in recent interviews that he is unsure of the future of the band, but that no decision regarding breaking up has been made.

It's called contractual obligations. The falling apart of a marriage does not invalidate your contract with a promoter. SY's days as a band are over.

"It's called contractual obligations. The falling apart of a marriage does not invalidate your contract with a promoter. SY's days as a band are over."

You must be correct because NO BAND has ever canceled a show after breaking up.

it was the sea and cake opening with jon glasser and jon benjamin doing comedy.

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2011 9:46 AM

10:16- Neil Innis is more likely going to be a special guest in the encore than an opening act.

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2011 12:42 PM

comedian 930-10?
ylt10-1130?

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2011 12:45 PM

Yo La Tengo finished up at 12:30 last night.

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2011 12:53 PM

ylt was 11-12:30
think opener started around 8:30 but not certain

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2011 12:54 PM

"Ian McCulloch from Echo & The Bunnymen sitting in tonight! He's not the opener, though."

Even though this is a lie, that would be kind of cool. It is Neil Innes sitting in tonight. He tweeted this the other day.

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2011 12:55 PM

Not for nuthin', but there are several "sit-in's" per night.

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2011 12:58 PM

How was their show altered with Ira taking a seat?

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2011 1:04 PM

Just announced! Tonight it's Dick Hertz and The Idontgiveafucks.

Todah Ha Shem that this shot only drops once a year. Then New Yersey can go back to being a silent cesspool again.

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2011 1:04 PM

12:22 - doubtful, since SM is not a hipster fuck and likes actually good music. Weird, I know.

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2011 1:06 PM

@12:58, not really but why should that stop you from making up a statement like that.

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2011 1:07 PM

Re: Ira sitting - Mac from Superchunk played 2nd guitar and keys the whole night.

We assume there will be a guest every night filling the same roll.

Tonight: Innes?

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2011 1:18 PM

and by 2nd guitar I mean - tore it the fuck up.

Ira wasn't shy either.

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2011 1:18 PM

Please don't let Real Estate be tonight's opener. I don't think I could take it.

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2011 2:59 PM

Real Estate might be tonight, might not. But they are definitely opening one of these shows, 100% on that.

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2011 3:07 PM

Mac sat in last night and nobody is guessing Superchunk or Portastatic to open tonight or another night? Do we know that Wurster or others are unavailable or something?

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2011 3:13 PM

Possible. But by his tweets, Wurster still seems to be in NC, so its not tonight.
