Lana Del Rey @ Bowery Ballroom
Lana Del Rey

After years of playing around NYC as Lizzy Grant followed by a secert-first-NYC-show at Glasslands, and all the chatter and controversy and love and hatred, "Lana Del Rey" made her official NYC debut at Bowery Ballroom last night (12/5).

Lana Del Rey finally took the stage in her self-appointed hometown of New York City earlier this evening in what she clearly felt was a put-up or shut-up performance. "It's good to be home," she told the Bowery Ballroom audience as she strode on stage to the bold entrance music of Bernard Herrmann's iconic score from Psycho. After a couple uncomfortable moments of "f***in technical difficulties" (her words), she quickly launched into "Without You," a song which contains lyrics that arguably define her ethos: "I think I found God in the flashbulbs of your pretty cameras."

Del Rey is an artist with undeniable vocal chops, but one that is also clearly a character through and through; this, however, is not a bad thing! Throughout the course of tonight's 40-minute(ish) set, her voice alternated between that of a baby-voiced vixen and a husky, world weary veteran, often pitching up and down between these vocal registers within the same verse of a single song. The visual imagery projected onto a series of three white balloons behind her on stage during her gig included a well-curated mix of Highbrow Brilliant and Lowbrow Despicable video clips -[VH1]

What did you think? Pictures from the NYC show are in this post, two sets of them.

Lana Del Rey is currently preparing for the release of her new LP Born To Die due on January 30th (maybe you listened to the title track while staring at her naked). Check out a live video of new track "Summertime Sadness" (courtesy of According2g), along with the setlist from Bowery and more pics, below...

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 12:43 PM

Can the description at least honestly read "manufactured controversy"?

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 12:44 PM

Did she just play "Video Games" 14 times?

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 12:45 PM

I thought she was just gonna play "Video Games" 14 times. What a rip-off.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 12:45 PM

Ugh. Pictures of this boring whore make me want to vomit. She and her "music" are fucking repulsive.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 12:47 PM

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 12:58 PM

Why isnt there a dick on the lips?

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 12:59 PM

LDR has a (50s) retro, highly manufactured image based around being extremely pretty and sexy. And she gets a wicked amount of backlash, despite the fact that the image fits the music perfectly. Zola Jesus, on the other hand, has a (80s) retro, highly manufactured image based around being extremely...gothy. And she doesn't seem to have a backlash at all. Musically, though, they're both hyper-stylized performers with a great set of...pipes. What does everybody hate? Why can't we admit that we clicked on the link (this link, or whichever was the first one you clicked on in 2011 to learn about her) because she's hot, and that some of us stuck around because she's a good singer who's also hot?

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:02 PM

1:02 perfecto!

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:03 PM

1:02,

Because this is the BrooklynVegan comment section where the lowest of the low (myself included) come to comment anonymously.

Sidenote: I really wish these comments had Facebook connect so we could see faces of all the balding nerds and losers who post on here.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:05 PM

get the fuck out of here 1:02, this is the internet. reason dont mean shit

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:06 PM

yes, good singer, and hot....not much more to say really

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:11 PM

she looks like Natalie Portman..dressed as a child beauty queen

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:12 PM

Pitchfork also has a review of this show. Two hype machine blogs with zero credibility.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:13 PM

She looks like she could get Tyler the Creator to start rapping about rape again.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:13 PM

Boring is the new exciting!

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:25 PM

i wonder how much she paid for that nose... and by "she" i mean that manager that she probably fucked and then fired eventually.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:25 PM

Cum guzzling blow up doll. Ick.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:29 PM

David Byrne was there last night. 100% serious.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:35 PM

@1:02
A. Zola Jesus is not sexualized to the extent that LDR is, I hesitate to say at all because I am sure there is a sexy photo of Zola out there somewhere. Frankly, she is like 5'0" and not conventionally attractive. LDR is built to attract hispter boners.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:35 PM

i went to the bowery show. she wasn't bad, she wasn't good - just okay. she isn't nearly as mopey or 50's chic in person as she is in her music videos; live she is just a normal NYC girl singing nancy sinatra-esque songs, so it falls flat (i.e. her 'character' isn't real, and is far from the way she acts onstage).

and yea david byrne was there.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:37 PM

Amy Klein is rubbing one out right now

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:38 PM

B. Zola has been progressing as a musician for years and a listen to her widely available discography will show that. LDR put out a shit album as Lizzy Grant then hid it, changed her name, got a manager and some surgery, and suddenly she has her sound/image.

Posted by Chris | December 6, 2011 1:38 PM

B. LDR's image is, as you say, "manufactured". Zola's image reflects her songwriting, but does not define, her music. Zola can and does talk about her influences and her image seems to have risen organically from the kind of music she strives to make.

Posted by Chris | December 6, 2011 1:40 PM

Hearing the news that David Byrne went to see Lana Del Rey has ruined my week.

Posted by Samuel | December 6, 2011 1:41 PM

The difference is credibility and integrity. Zola has been putting out a continuous stream of strong releases for 3 years leading up to this year's Conatus. She has not leaned on her image or sexuality to gather fans. A Zola show is populated by music fans, not 'goths' despite her image and tone being goth.

Posted by Chris | December 6, 2011 1:42 PM

LDR has put out a handful of singles (hence the meager setlist) and relies on sexy press photos to disseminate her sparse material. She strives to make few 'hip' songs and her audience seems to be eating up the hipster catnip.

Posted by Chris | December 6, 2011 1:42 PM

no one give a fuck about zola jesus. let's keep it moving...

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:46 PM

people were eating it up last night, i thought she blew. her songs are so stupid (see the vid of 'summertime sadness,' and just listen to what she's saying, jesus).

video games is a good track on record but it sucks live, as do all of her other tracks

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:50 PM

@147 Oh Land and Lana Del Rey need to release a lezzy sex tape, and put all this fake songwriting shit behind them.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:51 PM

12:38 YES. The whole time I was watching her last night, I kept thinking that.

SHAVE YOUR ARMS LDR

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:54 PM

That Oh Land segment on the last Beavis and Butthead was great. They should skewer Video Games next.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:55 PM

Zola Jesus played free at a summer outdoor concert in July 2010 and one did not need $$$ to see her.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:56 PM

Terrible show, she did not care about her audience and the audience did not give a crap about her. people talking and yelling insults could be heard more than her lyric slips.
she was bad.

Posted by meh | December 6, 2011 1:57 PM

Where are the upskirt pics?

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 1:59 PM

Ok, LDR was fun while she lasted...who is next on our agonizing hipster hit parade?

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 2:01 PM

@1:51 I wouldn't pay to see either of them sing, but I'd pay to see that.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 2:02 PM

LDR has DSLs

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 2:12 PM

It doesn't matter if you got nothing to say, if you have a pretty face you can play MHOW and BV will post a 3,000 picture post on you.

Pathetic. Truly.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 2:13 PM

or the Bowery Ballroom even.

Not that THAT matters, but the Myron little hipster fuck net proofreaders would invalidate the whole point otherwise.

They probably already did. But you normal people, you get what I'm saying.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 2:14 PM

you guys have way too much time on your hands and are just haters. she's got a great voice and i thought put on a great show. yes, she needs to work on her stage presence a bit but she is just getting comfortable performing live. thought it was a great show and she looked hot to trot!

Posted by anonymous | December 6, 2011 2:20 PM

When did Julia Roberts start singing?

*shocked that BV didn't post the upskirts. you know his shady ass has them

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 2:20 PM

St. Vincent > maZola and LDR

Posted by AnonHUMMUS | December 6, 2011 2:22 PM

She's looker for sure, but she can sing and her music hits straight. End of story.

Ladies and gentle, I present to you our newest product. We call it the Lana Del Rey. - The Industry

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 3:55 PM

Yeah

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 3:58 PM

Lana Del PAID

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 4:07 PM

I could care less about her being unauthentic. That is for morons to gab about. It has got to be about the songs first and foremost and that is what I cannot get past. The guy who wrote the VH-1 article above and some of the other commenters have just got it completely wrong. She does not in any way shape or form have killer songs. If you think these boring bland pieces of shit are excellent then you simply have no clue. The fact that these songs blow up on twitter is clearly a sign that the masses need to be wiped out in a typhoon. This chick's album is like the soundtrack for narcolepsy

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 4:08 PM

I wonder what exactly 1:23 thinks is the "new edgy, progressive and hotness."
I agree with the Zola Jesus comments, but there is absolutely no comparison. Nika is a brilliant woman. Lana Del Rey has a great voice, is attractive and knows her brand, but she is not very bright. I was at the show and was mostly entertained by finally putting a real face on this "person" she's created. And just like said above, she is a normal girl. It still exciting though and I am fond of her commitment to this alter-ego -- Lana Del Rey. It's like a good joke, but with some actual talent too.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 4:26 PM

4:08, really? I thought that was the Girls, Cults or Grizzly Bear album?

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 4:29 PM

"I could care less about her being unauthentic. That is for morons to gab about."

yep, she is every bit as "authentic" as Eleanora Fagan.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 4:30 PM

The only problem is there's no real talent beyond the decent voice. The songs are just really bland and offer nothing I haven't heard a thousand times before.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 4:32 PM

I look forward to getting served falafel by The Cults, burgers by Hodgy Beats, and drinks by Lana Del Ray in the summer of 2012. Maybe they can pool their resources and start a food cart outside The Woods.

Posted by Chris | December 6, 2011 4:40 PM

1:25 PM nails it with the 16 candles comment.

The rest of you are blow hards that go to dumb ass hipster Bowery Presents events all of the time so button it.

but the songs are terrible--her voice is not even good?? i dont understand this

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 5:17 PM

I could dismiss all the gripes about her looks (and she's not that hot), manufactured image (who doesn't have one) and musical shape-shifting (most have done it) if she could actually sing worth a damn.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 6:35 PM

Is it me, or do her first three singles pretty much sound like the same song?

Posted by The song remains the same | December 6, 2011 6:45 PM

1:59 + 2:20 + 4:58 read my sick perverted mind

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 7:18 PM

Not my kind of music. But if she bothers ugly feminist whores and little beta male turd burglars, then I support her 100%!

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 7:37 PM

i clicked on the story because i thought there would be funny comments. you guys disappointed me.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 7:53 PM

She's got like 150,000 Facebook fans. Seriously.
Mostly men, and European.

I have been following the whole LDR thing. I'm not convinced - she comes off as fake on interviews, but that one video games song is really good. Although I have to say she looks sort of tacky on the show pictures, although she is very pretty. She needs a stylist 100% of the time to maintain her image. Otherwise the masks slips off and it becomes clear that she is sort of pretending not in a good way. She on her way to becoming huge though.

What kind of person compares LDR to Zola Jesus..ZL can really sing and is not naked on her videos i.e. it's not about her looks as a female sex object. It's not about "being famous" for ZL.

I like that comment

"Hello people meet our new product. - Lana del Rey
All the best,

The Music Industry"

Posted by anon | December 6, 2011 8:44 PM

Why all the black people at the LDR show??

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 9:13 PM

All you hipsters with hardons are all gonna be like Stu in Hangover II when she turns out to be a full on tranie and you all just got fucked up the ass ... that's actually pretty damn funny.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 9:34 PM

i'm cumming

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 10:25 PM

I wonder what time during the day of the show did one of her lackeys go over to Broadway and buy those Chuck Taylor's for her because her stylist said it be cool and the indie kids will think you are "keeping it real" with the chucks...

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2011 10:41 PM

Curious, can she actually sing? — Her vocals seem so affected.

Posted by Anonymous | December 7, 2011 12:01 AM

^ never heard her sing. I'd fuck her though. So I'm a fan. Ugly girl music sucks.

Posted by Anonymous | December 7, 2011 12:13 AM

big tits or no? she looks like a B at best. i'm sure she's good on her knees like KBK though. nice & filthy.
