Screaming Females in studio (more by Kirstie Shanley)
Screaming Females

Screaming Females recently finished recording their fifth LP, which is set for an April 2012 release. They recorded the album at Electrical Audio in Chicago with Steve Albini. The picture above is taken from the recording sessions, which you can see more of at BV Chicago. Listen to a stream of Screaming Females playing one of their new songs live on WFMU below.

Screaming Females opened for fellow New Brunswick band Thursday at Thursday's last New Jersey show at Starland Ballroom on Monday (12/26). It was definitely the heaviest Screaming Females show I've ever seen, and if this any sign of the direction they're taking on the new album, then I'm all ears. They opened their set completely in the dark with the chugging intro of "Sheep" off 2010's Castle Talk, before bursting out into a number of songs filled with even more shredding and screaming from Marissa Paternoster than usual, while throwing in some Sonic Youth-y noise breakdowns.

Screaming Females play the Don Giovanni showcase at MHOW (2/11) with Laura Stevenson and the Cans, For Science, Shellshag, and Black Wine. Tickets are still available.

WHO IS THIS BAND???

Posted by Jen, Sara, Kelly and Rachel! | December 29, 2011 12:03 PM

Steve Albini and Thursday... two very current artists to associate yourself with!

I like Steve Albini as a person and a musician, but when are people going to accept that's he's a TERRIBLE producer? He stated himself all he does is set up mics and hit record. Thats it. Surfer Rosa - great songs, sounded like shit. In Utero - sounded like shit, half the tracks remixed. Fugazi - In on the Killtaker - sounded like shit, entire album re-recorded with seperate producer. Manic Street Preachers - JFPL - sounded like shit, entire album remixed. You are NOT going to sound like Nirvana because you hire him. Just stop. K thx.

@12:14

Who gives a fuck about Nirvana? Steve's production with Ministry, The Jesus Lizard, High On Fire, and Arabrot are MASSIVE.

PUMPED

12:14 agreed. Albini is more of a politician than he is an artist. The guy has written what like ten songs in the last 15 years. he gets exposed often. I don't care how cheap his rated are, I would never let him have any aesthetic say in anything.

I sort of agree with you..I think the best way to capture how good Screaming Females are is to capture their live show. Hopefully they release the WFMU set..I have heard bands belt out some of the best stuff right from that studio..they do a great job there..

If Albino messes up Ted Leo's side pieces' record I will never forgive him.

Posted by Anonymous | December 29, 2011 12:33 PM

great band... saw them play the siren fest at coney...

Posted by Anonymous | December 29, 2011 12:54 PM

I could put a couple of mics on stands and hit record. I don't know why you need Albini in the room unless you want to here his posturing.

Posted by Anonymous | December 29, 2011 1:15 PM

He has terrible posture

Posted by Anonymous | December 29, 2011 1:22 PM

12:14- Albini did not produce In On The Kill Taker. His sessions with Fugazi were aborted before they actually recorded anything.

12:19- Albini never recorded Ministry. His long standing hatred of Ministry and Jourgensen in particular is the stuff of legend.

Posted by Anonymous | December 29, 2011 1:29 PM

^Nope. Albini initally recorded In On The Kill Taker and the band decided not to release that version.

Posted by Anonymous | December 29, 2011 1:41 PM

so nice to see her without that stupid dress on.

Posted by Anonymous | December 29, 2011 1:48 PM

Tyler the Creator probably isn't in on these sessions?

Anyway, I prefer Butch Vig.

Posted by Anonymous | December 29, 2011 2:13 PM

^ what a stupid comment

Posted by Anonymous | December 29, 2011 3:26 PM

that's how i like my females

Posted by Anonymous | December 29, 2011 3:45 PM

What's stupid about 2:13's comment? Makes sense to me sort of. Tyler and Albini recently had some sort of a beef as I recall, and Butch Vig was the producer of Nevermind. In other words, it wasn't a totally random comment in context of the dumb conversation happening on this thread.

2:13 = 4:42

Wait. What the fuck is a BrooklynVeganChicago? What other cities is BV sleeping with?

I don't know this band Screaming Females, but I had a "screaming female" situation the other night... Let me explain:
So there I was out in the east village with my girlfriend sipping on pabst blue ribbon at a number of venues. Once the 4:00am hour hit, my girl said she was hungry so we decided to skip last call and run down to mamouns. During the walk over, we discussed in detail the delicious meal we were about to ingest. However, by the time we got there, mamouns was closed, and my female started SCREAMING!

@12:19
Since we are mentioning all the great albums Steve Albini has recorded...Don't forget
The Conformists "300"

Posted by byatch | December 29, 2011 10:06 PM

this chick is three ap*les high

Posted by Anonymous | December 29, 2011 10:12 PM

I've got to type ap*les now? Really? That's where we're at?

Posted by Anonymous | December 29, 2011 10:13 PM

yo isn't that the girl from crystal castles???

Posted by frustrated with haters | December 29, 2011 10:24 PM

what is fucking sad is that there are MUCH better groups than these guys in New Brunswick. And you BV jokers just post anything with ties to certain PR companies so your opinions are clouded with money.

Posted by Anonymous | December 30, 2011 6:55 AM

The guy produced, engineered, whatever he calls it, Surfer Rosa, right? That is one of the best albums ever made.

Posted by Anonymous | December 30, 2011 10:32 AM

I like steve albini and I like screaming females. Is there something wrong with that?

Posted by Anonymous | December 30, 2011 3:37 PM

^^ Yeah, you like Albini cause he does good work. SF, you like because they paid their way into your ears.

Posted by Anonymous | December 30, 2011 4:03 PM

4:03 has no idea what he's talking about lol

Posted by Anonymous | December 30, 2011 4:15 PM

^yeah Albini does good work? Heh?

Posted by Anonymous | December 30, 2011 4:37 PM

Posted by Anonymous | December 29, 2011 12:19 PM

The Jesus Lizard production was good even though Duane Dension had his disagreements with Steve occasionally. Duane is a great guy, Steve can be full of it.

Who cares about cheesy bland metal bands like Ministry, High On Fire, and Arbarot.

Posted by Anonymous | December 30, 2011 7:05 PM

@8:32 i love you

Posted by Anonymous | December 30, 2011 11:21 PM

These last couple of Thursday shows were fucking massive, in no small part because of SF. Also, seriously? You like Steve Albini's ideas and not his production? You really are taking a position purely for it to be the opposite of the sensible one, aren't you?

Posted by Anonymous | January 1, 2012 12:29 PM

couldn't be more excited for this album!

Posted by Anonymous | January 1, 2012 9:17 PM

@6:55

What groups for example? This is probably my favorite rock band out there right now, incredibly good.
