"got to beacon, realized my tickets to the national were for tomorrow. this will be the fourth time i got tickets but didn't get to see them!" - naveen

The National

"One of my new favoritist groups EVER is "The National." I heard them do one number on Letterman about a year ago, and heard "something" in their music that grabbed me. So I asked Liz if she knew about them, and she sent me a few tracks. Then I got "Boxer" - one of their albums, and it was amazing. Then I got their newest album "High Violet" and it was astounding. I don't know anything about music, really, but their songs are very musical, and complex musically, and some of the songs do what Amy describes as giving her "The Chills." The National does that for me, so I got a ticket for their performance tonight at the Beacon Theater in Manhattan. The venue is relatively small and really nice, their music is great and their performance was wonderful! So glad I got to see them live." [Ken Spencer]
The National played their third of six shows at Beacon Theater in NYC last night (12/14). So Percussion opened (but we sadly missed them). Wye Oak, who were also there on the second night, opens tonight.

Some pictures from last night, and a video of the band doing one of the two new songs they've been playing, below...

Do you guys sit there hitting the refresh button so you can be the first ones to post your hatred that nobody cares about?

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 10:36 AM

10:36, THANK YOU.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 10:39 AM

Ken Spencer should start writing reviews for BV. This is good stuff!

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 10:41 AM

Straight trolling today, BV, with Ken Spencer's thoughts. I like it.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 10:43 AM

Naveen also needs a planner or something. I understand they are playing lots of show, but it isn't hard to read the date on your ticket.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 10:45 AM

my glass of juice seems to have liquid in it and I will get wet if it spills.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 10:49 AM

i don't know if i have it in me to troll on TWO MORE of these national recaps. TWO MORE. and i'm not even thinking about the 8 further shows, i might sputter out around 6 or 7.

same set?

Ken Spencer may be the best living music journalist. Lester Bangs would be proud.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 11:02 AM

these shows show there is a high demand for boring music and hearing boring music multiple nights.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 11:02 AM

10:36 - i'm with you, in general, regarding the haters galore on bv. but that tripe written above by ken spencer is easily the most facile, frivolous writing about anything - ever!

i once fancied myself a bit of a critic (reviewed gang of 4, bauhaus, echo, etc. back in my college days). but i quickly realized the futility and uselessness of writing music criticism.

that crap written above almost makes me wish it was a criminal act. bv should be endlessly embarrassed having lead with that utter garbage.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 11:03 AM

i'm a national fan, at least i thought i was. but reading that devastatingly embarrassing nonsense written by ken spencer has me re-evaluating my musical tastes. seriously.

if i have anything in commonwith someone who can write something as ridiculaously juvenile as that, then i'm afraid something's wrong here.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 11:06 AM

I'm with Ken. I love musical songs.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 11:09 AM

I'm pretty sure the Ken Spencer excerpt is a joke. Lighten up. The National are playing six shows. Do we really need six thorough reviews? Aside from the openers, how different is one night going to be from the next? Besides, I'm not even sure his "review" is of Wednesday night's show. Can we all just take a moment to laugh at Ken's comical review?

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 11:15 AM

I love musical songs that are complex musically.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 11:22 AM

sad-dude rock

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 11:25 AM

wow. possibly the worst BV post ever.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 11:27 AM

Soon BV posts will be instagrams, youtube videos, and excerpts from shitty blogs...wait a second.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 11:33 AM

11:15 = ken

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 11:33 AM

Favoritist?

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 11:34 AM

Well at least he is honest about it, and at least he actually likes them for their music. The majority of commentors here appear to either like nothing at all or to like bands for the 'cool' factor. As I always say to my wife and brother in law, all sizzle, no steak!

Posted by Friend of Ken | December 15, 2011 11:37 AM

alligator was great for real. even i cant deny that

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 12:53 PM

Ken, I'm with you, I enjoy listening to musical music, its my favoritist, especially when it has something.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 12:54 PM

setlist please?!?

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 12:57 PM

why is the one brother at the top playing a guitar? he's on either bass or drums. get with the fucking program, man. you are not robbie robertson and the band. you can't just shuffle around on instruments like that.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 2:02 PM

Hey 12:57 - I know that this whole interwebz thingy can be kind of overwhelming sometimes, so I think I'll help you out with this instructive address (substitute the stars with colons and forward slashes like the example at the top of this window) - *bit.ly*tdkamy*

@2:02 missed nap time today

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 2:27 PM

Wow
Neveen is an imbecile that needs to buy a clue, and Ken Spencer .... well, that joke writes itself.
Thanks BV! This made my afternoon!

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 2:29 PM

what flaccid, failed indie-classical musician is curating this site now? BV is becoming like Rolling Stone 1987-2003.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 2:39 PM

I love The National and am going tomorrow, but "complex musically" is not one of the first 30 phrases I'd use to describe them.

Also, lay off Ken Spencer, guys. He's obviously just an 8 year old. Not cool.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 3:56 PM

naveen is so punk.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 4:12 PM

Did he mean douche chills?

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 4:34 PM

This is a good idea. Since weekdays always suck, it's good to go to this so you can fall asleep on Monday and wake up on Saturday. Win win.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 4:45 PM

I envy Ken Spencer. At least he can feel something. All I can do is post sarcastically on the site about, you know, how terrible everyone is.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 6:30 PM

the first comment by naveen demonstrates he is a drug user or just a moron

invest in a calendar watch, brainiac

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 7:24 PM

the hate makes this more better

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2011 7:25 PM

Do you guys have photos of Annie Clark singing with them? And by that I don't mean the shaky, low-quality video. If so, please post.

Keep up the good coverage.

Posted by william | December 16, 2011 3:17 PM

You know, Ken Spencer probably writes a blog about his own personal experiences for himself, his wife, and a handful of friends. I'm relatively certain that he didn't mean for his National post to be a serious "review" of the show.
But in standard BV fashion, his little blog post is cut and pasted to be
a) a placeholder for a real review
b) a jumping off point for the anonymous trolls to rag on Ken, hold him up to ridicule as not following hipster code, and generate hits for the site.

The actual BV coverage of the National shows this week has completely sucked, as has for the music coverage in general.

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2011 3:52 PM

the national is amazing

Posted by jordon | August 10, 2013 2:57 PM

Who is Ken Spencer? Some autistic kid?

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2013 3:05 PM

3:52, its all cause of the new format. Why didn't you mention how the new format sucks?

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2013 3:06 PM

I heard that Daft Punk, Annie Clark, and The National played together. I'd eat hummus with the national.
