Etta James at BB Kings in 2008 (more by Ryan Muir)
Etta James

Etta James, whose assertive, earthy voice lit up such hits as "The Wallflower," "Something's Got a Hold on Me" and the wedding favorite "At Last," has died, according to her longtime friend and manager, Lupe De Leon. She was 73.
She died from complications from leukemia with her husband, Artis Mills, and her sons by her side, De Leon said.

She was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010, and also suffered from dementia and hepatitis C. James died at a hospital in Riverside, California. She would have turned 74 Wednesday. -[CNN]

It's really sad to hear of the loss of such an iconic voice. RIP Etta James, you will be missed.

Cue hipsters all over saying how much they've always loved Etta James, even though they've never consciously listened to her once.

"Cue hipsters all over saying how much they've always loved Etta James, even though they've never consciously listened to her once."

Cue anonymous a-holes who actually give an F about what strangers think. Live your own life man while I live mine.

12:23, you're an idiot. Etta James was a ton of really great things, but even she would take exception to being called "classy".

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2012 2:27 PM

2:27, hahaha... agreed. I only saw her perform once in New Orleans but she was a dirty old lady. Great singing and performing talent though. RIP

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2012 2:32 PM

2:27 -- Etta's onstage persona and real life are not the same f--king thing! Even if you diasgree (with whatever reasons), why choose a place where people are paying respect to do so? Calling someone an idiot because you disagree with them? Acting rude and inciting a dispute on a thread recognizing the demise of a legend?? Glad you were able to get your point across...feel better about yourself now? Please refrain from answering, nobody actually cares.

RIP ETTA JAMES....an absolute star in every sense of the word!

I'm confused as to why 1:20 is upset over that comment? Does that mean he's going around pretending he listened to Etta James a lot?

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2012 3:03 PM

2:56, you are a disgrace to the memory of Etta James, who was an intense character, a tremendous performer, an entertaining individual, and a flawed human. But she didn't suffer fools either, and you're truly one of those.

a huge loss. RIP

"...you are a disgrace to the memory of Etta James."

3:31, you are a disgrace to your parents. D-bag!

One of the greatest ring tones of all time. Can't wait to pirate LDR's cover of it.
