6:11 how old are you?

Come here to defend Tyler The Creator?

Why don't you talk about how rape is awesome? That's what Tyler teaches right?

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2012 6:15 PM

I bet nyc sells out before feb.

Posted by cali (!) | January 25, 2012 6:17 PM

people who think that OF talk predominantly about rape are so wildly mis-informed.

keep fighting that pointless fight though - anyone who actually listens to the group knows it's not at all about hate.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2012 6:18 PM

6:15 I don't know who is turning to Tyler The Creator to "teach" them things.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2012 6:25 PM

you know what would truly be an odd future? One in which these dudes are more than a footnote or a punchline in five years.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2012 6:25 PM

Tyler is a skinny little punkass who needs to get his ass kicked.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2012 6:26 PM

"If Tegan and Sara need some hard dick hit me up!" - Tyler The Creator

What an immature little boy!

He's 20 years old and he acts like a toddler

Posted by Frank | January 25, 2012 6:40 PM

Who the fuck cares?

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2012 6:42 PM

dude he's just 20 years old. let me find the shit you used to write to your friends online when you were 20 and in college; probably makes tyler look like my little pony.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2012 6:50 PM

How is this moron famous?

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2012 6:59 PM

6:18, the issue is not whether they "talk predominately about rape" or whether they are "all about hate" - the issue is they are clearly pretty uncomfortable with a lot of things about women. Anyone with a brain knows the cartoonish violence they rap about isn't meant to be real. But anyone with a brain can also see that they're pretty freaked out by women. And don't point out to me that their producer is a woman. I am one too. We come in all types, including some who just don't get stuff. I don't think it entirely exuses them to be in their early 20s either. I was in my early 20s once. I wasn't so fucking freaked out by the guys I was sleeping with and their potential effect on my emotional state that I needed or wanted to write songs about doing all sorts of sick shit to them. Some girls do shit like that (maybe not quite so violent, but emotionally the same) but I wouldn't ever have called them interesting because of it. Being articulate isn't shit if the thoughts you're articulating are dumb.

Posted by anonymous | January 25, 2012 6:59 PM

Lana Del Rey vs. Tyler, the Creator. Who would win?

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2012 7:17 PM

They need to add a column entitled: "Do you care?"

Answer choice(s) would be: NO

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2012 7:17 PM

6:59,

You miss the point as well. It's not shocking nor are they freaked out by women. The beats are lame, there are no hooks and there is nothing interesting at all about their music.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2012 7:56 PM

Never heard of them. And by the looks of that flyer, I'm not missing much.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2012 8:00 PM

I don't give a sh*t about Odd Future, but I do like that tickets went on sale 'instantly'... shakes things up a bit.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2012 8:14 PM

Fuck these poser-ass clowns! Stupid uneducated fucktards who spout off about nonsense and want to get props in the hip-hop community??! FUCK YOU!!! I'd love to see Chuck D and KRS-One teach Tyler a thing or two about the game. Boisterous, know-nothing dickheads acting like damn fools, thinking they're the shit. Fuck this noise!

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2012 9:23 PM

"The beats are lame, there are no hooks and there is nothing interesting at all about their music."

It's like some dirty secret that nobody's allowed to write. Yonkers was this little anomaly for a few mins, but by and large these guys have a massive, growing catalog of absolute garbage. Amateurish, poorly produced schoolyard bullshit.

As an empty construction of hype, OF was every bit as exposed as Lana, just as fast, but for some reason the praise & hype just never stopped.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2012 9:37 PM

Hey 7:56, it's 6:59. I should invite my friend 789 over here. I never said I thought there was anything shocking about them. Young guys trying hard to shock is an old, old way of getting attention. Goes back way, way, way before this:

http://www.theonion.com/articles/marilyn-manson-now-going-doortodoor-trying-to-shoc,459/

As to them being freaked out by women, I will let their lyrics speak on that. It's subjective obviously, but to me it's pretty clear. Maybe "extremely uneasy with" is a better way of putting it.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2012 10:00 PM

To the intellectual elitist feminist in here trying to teach us all a lesson, quit wasting your time and get some background about these kids if you're gonna spout shit. These songs were written by immature 17 year olds....getthat? 17. That's when these songs were written.

They're kids who naievely believe that words have no meaning and that they mean whatever you want to apply to them. Its a kids way of thinking but there's no ill harm there.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2012 10:27 PM

In other words, quit gettin your panties in a bunch bout so?me immature kids. They're smart and will grow out of it.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2012 10:30 PM

So, to summarize the arguments both for & against:

OF are just some naive, immature, hypocritical children who make terrible, sophomoric music and are an embarrassment to hip hop & to the independent music press that props them up.

So we should all relax and continue to read about their every move every day?

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2012 11:14 PM

Also, remember when one of these guys actually HIT A WOMAN from the stage in broad daylight on camera and then tried to pretend it never happened?

Right, glad we're all back to hyping their tour & projects and put all that behind us.

Fuck OF.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2012 11:17 PM

bowery presents shows had happened at hammerstein before. hammerstein is an independent venue and tend to ask the big promoters for an obligation to a certain amount of shows per year.

Posted by ME | January 25, 2012 11:57 PM

Remember when we all liked rap?

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 12:40 AM

I'm actually going to rephrase my earlier comment:

Remember when rap was good?

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 12:55 AM

Youth can be forgiven for mistakes made while young, but crap is crap, and you have to lower the bar just because someone's young:
BDP started when KRS One was 19.
Ian MacKaye started Dischord when he was 18.
Bob Marley started the Wailers when he was 18.
Robert Johnson was DEAD at 27.
Nick Drake was dead at 26.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 1:19 AM

^^Shit!
I meant "DON'T have to lower the bar,

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 1:20 AM

Get down on it...

Posted by ch131 | January 26, 2012 4:44 AM

1:19, agreed. I don't remember any of the above people you mentioned being obnoxious assholes in their early years. And if you're going to compare apples with apples (or hiphop with hiphop, for that matter..), KRS-ONE was homeless before he started, and built himself up to what he became.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 6:13 AM

Yeah, that's a pass.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 9:15 AM

Meh, their live shows seem to have tons of energy, but from all the vids I've seen they sound awful

Posted by osfeditor | January 26, 2012 9:34 AM

Stupid youth music for stupid young people. Makes suburban kids feel hardcore and edgy. That's it, nothing more.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 9:42 AM

Based on these comments, it looks like Tyler is going to be big for awhile.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 9:56 AM

I hope SNL doesn't book these clowns.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 10:21 AM

people who like this shit are the same types who like die antwoord. give it another year, these idiots will be gone, too.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 10:22 AM

"Ian MacKaye started Dischord when he was 18."
Ian MacKaye did a lot of really indefensible things when he was a teenager. There's a live Minor Threat bootleg where he advocates gang raping a drunk woman. (And there's "Guilty of Being White.") I don't think he's the example you want to use, unless you're talking about how people can grow up and change and become good people.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 10:38 AM

"6:15 I don't know who is turning to Tyler The Creator to "teach" them things."

If you are "turning" to any motherfucker with a microphone or teleprompter to "teach them things" is a fucking idiot that deserves to have their money / woman / hummus taken from them and given to those with a fucking clue.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 10:38 AM

It's only entertainment. If you want answers, open The Bible.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 10:39 AM

Stop talking about these dorks and let's talk about some REAL news: The Adventures of Pete & Pete is coming to Bowery Ballroom!!!!

http://www.boweryballroom.com/event/93299

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 10:50 AM

10:38, youre really gonna have to put up or shut up with that Ian accusation. Advocating raping a drunk woman? How come I dont believe you? Where is this bootleg?

And what exactly is wrong with the song Guilty of Being White? Do you not possess the ability to discuss race without your innate white-guilt ridden self kicking its leg out of reflex? Dont try to place your cowardice on other people because you cant speak openly and genuinely about race. Youre probably the type of person who says "Well one of my best friends is black", because you constantly need to mention that you're not racist. Fuck off.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 11:13 AM

You know why OFWGKTA is so popular? It's because people know instinctively that political correctness is total bullshit, invented by some race-guilty white self-deluded "intellestia" to assuage their comfort and status.

You want these dopes to go away? Stop perpetuating the lies of political correctness and start treating people like Dr. King demanded - according not to the color of their skin (or gender, or race, etc. etc.), but to the content of their character. And, for God's sake, don't assume that you know what the other guy is thinking or feeling - just give them the respect and courtesy that we all deserve.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 11:46 AM

I just saw that 10:50. Unfortunately Polaris won't be there.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 11:57 AM

Hey 11:13, look for it on Chunklet. Irving Plaza '82. First part. About 10 minutes in.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 12:27 PM

i AGree in talk predominantly about rape are so wildly mis-informed.Thanks

Posted by Aeronaves | January 26, 2012 12:27 PM

Johnny Cash sang about killing a man just to watch him die. That doesn't mean he had ever done it or even advocated it.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 12:36 PM

oh by the way 11:13, I love Minor Threat/Fugazi/Embrace/etc but I think Ian said some stupid things when he was younger. So people need to be given a little slack.

Also, not only do I have a lot of black friends, but EVEN BETTER, my mom is black, too! I'm only HALF filled with white guilt, the other half is filled with black anger.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 12:46 PM

11:46, great rant, but what is your point?

Peoples' perception that political correctness is bullshit = popularity of OF?

Further, all the vile shit they talk about in their songs is a pretty good indicator of their "character," which I think Dr King would be appalled by.

Try again.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 1:11 PM

"Johnny Cash sang about killing a man just to watch him die. That doesn't mean he had ever done it or even advocated it."

OF rode with that defense for a while, but then had no substance to back it up. Cash has plenty.

oh, and then Left Brain PUNCHED A WOMAN IN THE FACE ON STAGE at Voodoo Music Experience.

What's that? another OF defender without a leg to stand on?

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 1:44 PM

1:11 - i bet you've only heard one or two OF songs...listen to the music if you want to make flagrantly wrong points.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 1:47 PM

1:24 - As well he shouldn't. His only talents are his ability to dance, and he has a good backhand.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 1:48 PM

If I say the 'n' word, my comment would get posted. If I say 'sp1n doctors' and spell it correctly, my comment gets held for approval. Way to go, BV.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 1:50 PM

They just lucked into the spotlight, especially Frank Ocean whose self-released album was SO HORRIBLE that Kanye and Jay Z agreed to make his the first voice you hear on Watch The Throne.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 1:52 PM

1:52, Kanye and Jay Z decided to use Frank Ocean because he's hype-worthy, and they want to latch on to the new upcomers (to let people know that they still have an ear on the street). He's not bad vocally, but there are better voices out there.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 1:56 PM

To correct the above, he's not "hype-worthy"; rather there's a lot of hype around him. Not sure that he's worthy of all the hype, but the hype is there.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 1:58 PM

I'm all for the freedom to use the n-word on BV. It certainly lends credence to any theory about the type of people that leap into a rap thread complaining about black people.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 2:30 PM

1:50 - that's because the word that starts with N and sounds like figure is offensive and detestable (and therefore encouraged by the Supreme Court), while the Doctors of Spin just plain suck dead donkey dicks. Big difference, you see? see?

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 2:30 PM

"1:11 - i bet you've only heard one or two OF songs...listen to the music if you want to make flagrantly wrong points."

Indeed, 1 or 2 songs was more than enough. I'd love to hear why my points are flagrantly wrong, and also what your point was in the first place. You still haven't made one.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 2:31 PM

my point is/was that you're talking out of your ass - just as you just affirmed.

If you want to waste your time trying to "teach" people about how bad OF are, maybe you should be more knowledgeable about the topic?

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 2:52 PM

hate to break it to you, but you are not substantiating any of your claims any more than i am. in fact, you're not doing it at all. talk about "talking out of your ass."

it's ok, though. OF needs apologists, too.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 3:25 PM

I've listened to ALL their material and spent a substantial amount of time with them listening to what they had to say and seeing who they are.

They're kids. they rarely rap about rape (proportionally to the amount of lyrical content they have) and they definitely are not glorifying and teaching it.

As i said, they naively believe that words only have the power that you give them and think all definitions are malleable. They give their listeners the benefit of the doubt that they'll hear past the literal meanings of the words and understand they're not trying to be hateful...

Unfortunately, people like you (and the media) still latch on to the few throw-away lines about rape and such and focus on that like it's some big thing.

It's not.

They aren't hateful in their intent.

They're accepting of people of all types.

Their fans know it. People that know them know it.

Now quit wasting your time trying to tell everyone what bad people they are when you haven't got a clue.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 3:45 PM

They suck their music sucks no matter what topic they rap about it sucks it sucks it sucks

good day and go giants

Posted by Mark | January 26, 2012 4:13 PM

All I can really say is this-
A future without hummus is a bad future.
Carry on my good men...

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 4:25 PM

Well, Mr./Ms. apologist, color me (and "people like me") uninformed and just unable to "get it," I guess.

People like you, in my estimation, are even more repugnant than these punk ass kids. I hope you're at least getting paid to do whatever it is that you do.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 4:39 PM

i didn't say you didn't "get" it - i said you were uninformed and talking out of your ass.

why do you feel the need to attack me? how am i repugnant exactly?

seems like you're the one with the issues.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 4:42 PM

you can just say you don't like the music without going on a tangent about how they're despicable rapists you know.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 4:45 PM

I'm the opposite. I like the music. I don't like them personally. Any time Tyler opens his mouth, he sounds obnoxious and immature.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 5:03 PM

no Chicago show because they are afraid of Albini

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2012 5:10 PM

i can do this all day baby -

"There simply is no truth to the accusation floating around the internet. Its no secret that Odd Future has a love/hate relationship with photographers at shows simply because sometimes they are given access the group wishes their fans would have instead. After telling the photographers to clear out multiple times (as they've done before) Vyron (Leftbrain) took a swipe at a few cameras, NOT people. To manipulate the situation to insinuate an attack on a woman specifically is careless and manipulative."
