"i just want to say that i think glorified displays of people wasted out of their minds and passed out are really upsetting to me." - JD Samson

"Nothing turns me conservative faster than being on a train with a bunch of stoned Phish fans that just got out of Madison Square Garden." - Frank Hejl

"So many Phish fans looking for a miracle outside Penn Station." - Maura Johnston

"Now hundred of "fans" all over the arena hovering 50 feet above the crowd dancing." - Colonel Forbin

"The floating fans above the crowd would've had me freaking at Phish MSG. I mean, Jesus. What if one hurled?" - Ravenval

Phish

"It's not the ball drop, but for tens of thousands of people, Phish's annual run of shows at Madison Square Garden, which winds up on New Year's Eve, is the more significant year-end event in Manhattan. Always an immediate sellout, the concerts are both a tradition and a challenge. Phish has to provide its familiar joys but vary them enough to surprise fans who are obsessively meticulous tabulators.

Thursday night's concert was Phish in crowd-pleasing mode: uptempo, playing familiar songs and ready to keep fans dancing -- never getting too abstract or experimental. Its two sets were both CD-length, just under 80 minutes each, with the Rolling Stones' "Loving Cup" as a splashy, gospelly encore....This was just a big, happy Phish party. The musicians' fingers flew; lights splayed above the stage; glowsticks were tossed, in mass bursts, at big transitions; balloons bounced around; the year-end ritual was intact. Thursday's concert was a high-level holding action; the next one, as always, might be something else entirely." [NY Times]

Phish took over Madison Square Garden during New Year's Eve week once again. The Vermont jam band hit the venue four nights in a row up to and including New Year's Eve (12/28 - 12/31). Pictures from the second show, the same night the NY Times reviewed, are in this post. If you weren't there, maybe you paid to watch one of the shows streaming live in HD via the band's website (it was $55 to stream all four and it came with access to watch it again).

Were you there? Apparently JD Samson was. Did anyone see any of Trey's friends from the National in the crowd (or over the crowd)?

More pictures from night two (12/29), video of the hanging people getting put up into the air on New Year's Eve, and all four setlists (they covered TV on the Radio's "Golden Age" on New Year's Eve), below..

They didn't repeat one song? How many other bands can do that on a 4 night 12 hour run of live music?

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 2:28 PM

Its easy when you "jam" on a 3 minute song for 45 minutes

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 2:32 PM

Thank you BV for this obvious troll joy post. Now guys, let the losers who love this band start posting their comments before we rip them to shreds.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 2:33 PM

Fun was had. I'm sure NYE at Zorn's Stone was fun too but c'mon this weirdness cannot be denied.

Posted by S (!) | January 4, 2012 2:33 PM

^ Ok...let me take your example...22 songs played night 1. 22 x 45=990 minutes! Wow Phish played 16 and a half hours the first night!

What smells worse NYC in the Summer or MSG during a Phish Show?

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 2:45 PM

Thank God my drugs were good, otherwise I would have been pissed! What happened to the Phish I used to love?

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 2:46 PM

2:33 is a realllly cool dude. Cant wait to see you rip them to shredsssssssssss bruh!!!! Sorry toolbox, dont be mad cause your favorite "band" is Zola jesus. Phish MSG runs trump about 90% of the shows i see a year which run the full gamut from folk to death metal

Posted by Crosseyed Sniper | January 4, 2012 2:58 PM

Is that guy with his hands up in the blue shirt that annoying Jesus Freak from this past season of "Survivor"?

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 2:58 PM

i literally HATE phish more than any band. more than nickleback and creed.

BUT i would have paid anything to have been one of those fans floating above the crowd when the balloons dropped. if you were one of those fans suspended in the air, on acid, with a few joints in your pocket, that owuld've been the best experience ever. 50ft above a sold out MSG crowd with a jam band playing and balloons and confetti and shit everywhere. jesus.

then i would've pee'd on everyone and gotten kicked out. still the shit

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 2:58 PM

Almost as bad as a Jimmy Buffett concert. Not quite, but close.

I love this picture

http://www.brooklynvegan.com/img/music/phish/msg5/21.jpg

That girl has the best face on. Like "nice take my picture cause I know it will be on BV the next day and people are gonna mock me for liking Phish and being with that douche next to me"

Come to think of it that guy is probably 2:48.Looks just like the type of guy who comments on here using words like "bruh" and "toolbox" and saying they go to shows ranging the full gamut of folk to death metal"(sure they do)

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 3:08 PM

3:08,

Yeah, I agree. Hopefully that hot girl wasn't with the loser next to her. Way too much of a dork for that girl.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 3:17 PM

Man... is that Bob Saget behind that girl?

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 3:26 PM

2:48 needs to learn how to punch himself in the face.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 3:28 PM

It always amazes me that so many people still judge Phish based on their fans. I mean, aren't we all over like 17, you should be able to judge music on music. And if you hate the music fine, but saying they are a bad band is stupid, too. They have more skill than literally 99% of the bands posted on here that people love. I hate obnoxiously fucked up bros and smelly hippies as much as the next guy on this site but this band knows how to put on a show.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 3:31 PM

i hate phish. but they have talent. that is all.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 3:43 PM

golden age was a nice surprise. i was at thurs and nye.

people were a bit too coked/molly'd out of their faces around me on nye but both shows were fun.

nye msh phish shows will always be something special.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 3:46 PM

one does not simply "enjoy" a phish concert

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 3:53 PM

"nye msh phish shows will always be something special."

Sure,if you are a clueless idiot then yes they will always be special

And let's get one thing straight, just because a musician is technically proficient does not mean they make good music

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 3:58 PM

Still no one has put up another band they like! Just what I thought...bunch of wussies!

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 3:59 PM

No, it doesn't, you are right. But it's not like Phish is some way out there type of music that is hard to like. For every spaced out/goes nowhere endless jam they have a straight up blues rocker and a fun reggae tune and a heavier rock tune, etc. I don't like everything they do but it's not a bunch soulless prodigies, it's 4 very, very good musicians.

And even if they were, I think we're old enough to at least put talented people in a different category. I hate metal and 99% of the shit BBG posts about on here for example, but I very rarely make fun of metal bands because there is a musical talent innately necessary to be one of the better, more popular ones.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 4:00 PM

I love how every one assumes that the people flying in the air were fans on drugs and not professional aerialists. Also there were only like four songs that eclipsed the fifteen minute mark and only one of those did so with improv (piper).
I get why people dont like phish but get your facts straight bitches.
Also dont go to phish shows if you dont like them.
Im not crashing your bon iver or arcade fire affairs. Leave us alone

3:58,

3:54 here Oh i do have lots of fun at shows. Just because I don't like crappy bands like Phish. In fact I would say you liking this shit band makes you the furthest thing from a "music Fan' More like a clueless lemming idiot. So shove that one up your asshole.

3:59-No one has taken your idiotic baiting question cause it's ridiculous. Any band someone will name, let's take Radiohead for example-a far far better band by a fucking mile. you will just crap on for the sake of praising Phish.

And again just because they are technically great musicians does not mean the music they create is good .Its not.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 4:12 PM

think JD had enough money to buy her own ticket?

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 4:16 PM

Lemming for liking Phish in NYC? I'd say you are far more likely to be made fun of for saying you like Phish here than not.

Also, I'd bet money the majority of Phish fans also like or at least appreciate Radiohead immensely.

See, the ability to actually enjoy and/or appreciate different types of good musicians' music is what makes a good music fan. If anyone is a lemming, I'd say it's the guy that trashes a legitimately talented band on the internet, ie you, 4:12.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 4:23 PM

3:08 is a complete and utter a$$hat who does not understand sarcasm. Most people would argue that trait is a sure fire sign of low intelligence and i would have to agree bruh

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 4:25 PM

2:48/4:25 same guy. Really? That's what you are coming back with? "Ohhhhhh they didn't understand my sarcasm"
You fucking idiot. Go get a life (and maybe some more intelligent words to express your sarcasm)

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 4:37 PM

FUCKIN HIPPIES. GO DIE.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 4:38 PM

I'd respect Phish more If I came across a greater number of their fans who actually remember the full experience of seeing them live, instead of the high number of idiots I have run across that seem to use the shows as an an excuse to get completely fucked up. If you are a fan that this does not apply to, I am sorry, but said-mentioned idiots are definitely giving you a bad name.

Posted by Tela | January 4, 2012 4:56 PM

What does the fanbase have to do with an appreciation for the music, though?

99% of these bad comments are making fun of the fans, which I'd gladly jump in on hah. But besides the incorrect "they just noodle for hours" argument, I have never seen an anti-Phish argument on this site, and in general for that matter, that went beyond "Phish sucks!".

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 4:56 PM

what's wrong with getting fucked up?

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 4:57 PM

4:12...radiohead is better than Phish I am not denying that but there are few bands that are on the same level. Give me another band Wussie!

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 4:58 PM

Guided by Voices is better than Phish.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 5:05 PM

^Those hippies..that is real rich

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 5:08 PM

i love both radiohead and phish, equally. i saw radiohead 3 times one year and by the 3rd show, sadly, i got kind of bored because i no longer heard anything new. i saw phish about 9 times this year and by the end of the NYE show i was still looking for more. but that's just me

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 5:09 PM

Guided by Voices may be the one band that has worse lyrics and song titles than Phish!

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 5:09 PM

If Guided By Voices is your competition see their letterman performance and compare it to the Phish MSG clip...The letterman clip was a sad showing...they sounded underehersed and sad. Phish sounded tight...

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 5:16 PM

5:09...I saw Radiohead at Roseland and Phish at PNC this year both decent shows but I like the unpredictability of Phish setlist...they do always leave you guessing.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 5:18 PM

Phish and Guided by Voices? There is no comparison. Guided by Voices are simply better musicians.

YO NEW YEARS RULED. FUCK ALL HATERS.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 5:29 PM

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 6:11 PM

*existence i mean

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 6:11 PM

"Phish and Radiohead are very influential bands"

Seriously? Who is influenced by Phish besides a few other stoner jam bands. I have never seen any of their albums lauded on year end lists or lists of important and classic records.
They put out so so records and yes play packed arena shows to a bunch of over the hill hippies who miss the Grateful Dead, bros from the suburbs and their gf's who like to get stoned and a bunch of other clueless idiots who think their music is some kind of technical marvel.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 6:21 PM

I agree phish is not a very influential band-- more the end result of their own influences. But they are highly innovative. See: antelope, bowie, curtain with, fuck your face, bffcfm, etc

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 6:34 PM

Phish are legends on Earth.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 6:38 PM

Phish influenced millions of people. They're not a fad. They're great musicians. Shitty musicians don't get it.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 6:43 PM

6:21? Really? Being able to play to thousands per show for 20 years (minus their inactive years). That's something right there. And before you make the stupid "well [insert shitty pop star here] sells out arenas too" argument, we'll see where they are in 20 years.

Whether you like the genre or not, Phish is one of the most influential jam bands ever.

And technical marvel? Not particularly, but they take a hell of a lot more risks and can do a hell of a lot more on their instruments than the majority of bands that reach this level of popularity.

But yea, well all know shitty blogs and music magazines' year end lists are REALLY what matter....sigh...

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 7:16 PM

Phish is a great band. They totally changed music and influenced millions of people.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 7:19 PM

4:57 great point. Setting aside for a moment the fact that phish sucks, we can all at least agree that getting fucked up is cool, right?

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 8:03 PM

7:16 you are so wrong it is hilarious. Phish have not been selling out arenas for 20 years.Took em a bit of time but who cares. So what. There are a ton of stupid people out there with little to no taste you keep seeing them again and again. What a revelation.

And yes i know it is easy to dismiss any critical reviewer or evaluator when they never seem to like your band.

"Infulential jam bands" HAHA is there a more redundant phrase out there. i Doubt it.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 8:09 PM

Redundant? Do you mean oxymoronic? See, I said moron.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 8:14 PM

Yea, I don't think you mean redundant...idiot.

And I didn't say they have been playing arenas for 20 years, I said thousands of people. Obviously their first shows were not thousands, and 20 years is also only back to 1992, a few years after they were already selling larger rooms.

What do you listen to, out of curiosity? Not trying to "get you," I'm legitimately curious. Chances are we both enjoy a lot of the same stuff.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 8:46 PM

8:09....you are a fucking idiot. you might want to learn what the words you're using mean before spouting off about things you know nothing about.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 9:15 PM

Phish is amazing...best live band around and I laugh at all of you who think the whole fan base is hippies, maybe you should go to a concert first. Just because 30 people are wearing tye dye shirts doesn't mean everyone there are hippies.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 11:19 PM

Phish is a Guided By Voices ripoff.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 11:36 PM

mgmt loves phish

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 11:54 PM

and trey loves animal collective, pavement, my bloody valentine...all those great indie bands. and mike's solo band covers radiohead's song '15 step' and the bowie/eno 'i'm deranged,' so yeah if you're hating on phish you're indirectly hating on all that

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2012 11:58 PM

This band is terrible and you are a bunch of weenies.

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2012 12:13 AM

their influence goes beyond music. see the blue print for any major festival in the us and then look at what phish was doing in the mid 90's by themselves- drawing 70k people to a remote stretch of land to play a ton of music and have other art instalations and exhibits for fans in their downtime, while people camped out. bonaroo, coachella, and the rest of them all copied that blueprint

^ lulz! people can be so wrong...

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2012 9:37 AM

Phish doesn't need opening bands, pop hits theaterics or other gimics to sell a show. They started out very organic from word of mouth and tape trading...this type of phenominon doesn't happen any more.

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2012 9:53 AM

it really bums me out to see music fans cannibalize each other like this. speaking strictly from anecdotal experience, the average phish fan pumps a tremendous amount of revenue into the music scene. i saw about 100 shows this year (5 of them were phish, as many times as i saw caught UMO this year), including two festivals (Hopscotch in Raleigh and FFF in Austin). that said, i think the antagonization of phish fans is double-edged. part of it is undoubtedly brought on themselves through the eccentricity and absurdity of their scene, but at the same time, i think other music fans wish that they had a community like it to belong to themselves. my .02.

Posted by shf9 | January 5, 2012 10:51 AM

New years ruled. Phish can do no wrong.

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2012 11:06 AM

jacuzzi*boys>gbv>phish

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2012 12:50 PM

10:51-I actually think you are way off. It is not jealousy at all or a desire to have the same type of community. I will agree with you that part of the hate comes from the fanbase. You put it in a nice flowery way but the bottom line is most Phish fans are morons. People you would never want to be at a show with much less a community with. And while some of those fans do listen to other music and go to other shows the majority are locked into mostly the same jam band scene.
Furthermore, many Phish fans are shortsighted and have no clue as to the past and think Phish ushered in all these new fangled ways of doing things. Case in point I would direct you to the recent comments by 7:29 and 9:53. Yeah right they started all that stuff. How old are you 2 idiots? 16? Try doing some research. Traveling festivals in remote places were being done well before your sacred band came along. And word of mouth building/tape trading as well. But thanks for the reminder that tape trading is no longer done in an age where cassette tapes as a means of listening to music is basically history.
Finally, the biggest reason for the dislike is a simple fact. The band and the music they make SUCK.

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2012 1:23 PM

Most of the haters have never heard a single Phish song. (Don't lie, haters, you know you haven't. You just knew some kid in college who lived on your floor who liked them and he was stoned and happy all the time, and now you're holding a grudge.) Most people have an image of the band based on reputation and stereotypes. So, lovers of the band, just turn the other cheek and be lucky there weren't more people vying for tickets for this run. I, for one, have given up trying to get people to actually LISTEN to the music. Now I keep it all to myself. Let the masses listen to Cold Play and/or the pretentious and vacuous "indie" bands from Williamsburg.

I have never seen so many idiots on one message board. Phish is the greatest band ever.

Way to live with your head up your ass 1:30.

Anyone who is a vegan is a loser.

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2012 3:24 PM

1:23 - i'm sure you won't be back to read this, but i'll put it out anyway. exactly what about the band and their music suck? you may not like the songs, but what sucks about them? the length at which they play? i guess Can sucks too. the odd arrangements? fuck off, Zappa fans. the irreverent lyrics? Malkmus is dog shit!

Posted by shf9 | January 5, 2012 3:33 PM

The idea,3:33, that you would even mention Can and Zappa in the same breath as Phish shows you to be the hands down winner of biggest retarded fucker ever to comment on Brooklyn Vegan. Good job halfwit.

i guess i was looking for reasonable discourse and forgot that i was on the internet. my fault.

Posted by shf9 | January 5, 2012 4:29 PM

Sorry shf9, nice try but there can be no reasonable discourse when you try to compare those artists with Phish. You are a lunatic. It is like trying to discuss religion objectively with someone who is a Scientologist.

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2012 4:54 PM

shf9 makes better points than the anonymous poster. i'd like to add that whoever your favorite band is (1) sucks and (2) would have an equal amount of douchebag fans if they were as popular as phish. i mean, go to the bowery and you can't hear the song if you're not in the first five rows of people because everyone and their brewpub pint can't keep their thoughts to themselves.

Actually, one of Trey's biggest influences is Frank Zappa. Also Ornette Coleman. He studied jazz guitar and harmony pretty seriously. It was when heard Jerry Garcia (also influenced by avant-garde "classical" composers, blues, jazz, and bluegrass) then he changed his whole approach to the instrument.

There are plenty of people who are A) sober and/or B) remember every note played when they leave a concert. (Well, there are too many notes to remember, but catch my drift.) Once again, listen to a band before judging, please, especially when you judgements are entirely based on FANS and not music and musical abilities.

phish is an insanely awesome band and i dont even like them-end of debate

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2012 3:40 PM

PHISH IS THE GREATEST BAND IN THE WORLD.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2012 4:06 PM

One of Treys biggest influences is Eddie Van Halen. Listen to Lawn Boy.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2012 4:08 PM

Who cares about what his influences are 1:40? That does not mean it will translate to his own playing. The homeless guy on the corner of my block who sings every morning was greatly influenced by Frank Sinatra. I guess someone should book him to play MSG.

I for one have listened to Phish's music.Even went to one of their shows with a friend who had an extra ticket.

They are terrible.

Now the debate is over.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2012 4:19 PM

You're right, 4:19, because YOU think they are terrible, then they must be, and the debate is over, and you WIN! (the crowd cheers for "Anonymous!" I only wish I knew your name so that I could discover what an incredibly talented person you are! I bet you've changed thousands of people's lives with your profound musical ideas and abilities. Keep up the amazing work!

I think PHISH is amazing and talented and a great source of entertainment for many. And all of you who take the time to say how much they hate hippes and this music sucks I would venture to say your lives suck and you have you heads up your own asses, there for you always are smelling something dirty. And those of you who think that PHISH suspended their own fans and not professional dancers dressed up as fans are just moronic. And for me and my PHISH friends being so "hippy" I'm sure We are educated, talented and make a hell of a lot more income than 99% of you hating assholes. And I'm in the pics up there with my boy Trey. Happy New Year !!!!!

Phish is like Apple. They are super popular because they provide a great product. Unfortunately alot of their fans (both Apple and Phish) are too zealous and turn off lots of others.

Stupid hipsters don't realize how assembly line produced they and their personalities are? The same people who spout off about gay rights and treating everyone equal is so quick to dismiss something they havent even listened to. You hipsters are the most close-minded, bitter, selfish, self-absorbed, whiny, i-didnt-get-my-way wastes of life ive ever had the unfortunate opportunity to have to co-exist with. All you do is consume and never give anything back. Love that because JD Samson doesnt like to indulge, everyone else is a fuckhead for doing so. Fuck you judgemental, snarky hipsters. You aren't artists...you are assholes. Phish is unique art in motion being created at every show. You pansies wish that you could have something so creative and beautiful in your lives!
