UPDATE: It happened

Van Halen

As you may have read at the NY Times and elsewhere:

Van Halen has invited music writers and critics to an intimate concert at Cafe Wha? in Greenwich Village on Thursday night as a prelude to a tour with the band's classic lineup later this year. Nothing official has been released, but journalists have been told the group will play a short set. The one-night performance in that 250-seat club on MacDougal Street in Manhattan marks the latest enigmatic hint that the band has sent about its plans for the year.

In late December, the band released videos on its Web site showing the original frontman, David Lee Roth, as well as the brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen, rehearsing and goofing around while a ticker on the bottom of the screen read: "Van Halen on Tour 2012? and "First tickets on sale Jan. 10."

That video is below...

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2012 5:20 PM

Yes, but I don't think anyone of importance has played there in 30 years.

That poor dog! Forced to watch Diamond Dave shuffle across the stage for hours!

Posted by M | January 5, 2012 5:22 PM

so did Miles Davis. even though i'm not a huge fan of the Van Halen, seeing them in that tiny place would be sick.

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2012 5:23 PM

What they are doing to Michael Anthony is despicable.

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2012 5:23 PM

Cafe Wha? was originally owned by David Lee Roth's uncle, Manny Roth.

Posted by Jason | January 5, 2012 5:24 PM

Patti Smith is playing, too.

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2012 5:27 PM

I'm just going to down a full bottle of Cabo Wabo, the finest tequila in the world, and then go drive my car off a cliff.

Posted by Sammy Hagar | January 5, 2012 5:27 PM

GBV GBV GBV!

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2012 8:49 PM

VH hate is hilarious.

EVH basically re-invented the technique and sound of guitar, as well as completely upending the guitar manufacture industry, all by the time he was 22 years old.

So, @5:19 / 5:22 / et al ... what have you done with your pathetic life? Ph, don't feel bad, you have seven more years until you hit 22.

EVH is the best living guitar player and a legend. I wouldn't expect any hipster douchebags that visit this site and actually enjoy music like Matt & Kim and anything Radiohead has released in the past ten years to understand balls out Rock 'n' Roll. You all probably think AC/DC and the Ramones don't matter either.

Leave Williamsburg and move back to Iowa. Please. For all our sakes.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2012 10:07 AM

Wrong. Joe Satriani is the best living guitar player.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2012 10:14 AM

^^^ nope, steve vai

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2012 10:18 AM

^^^ nope, clapton, THEN buckethead, THEN slash. sick chops on those legends. sick.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2012 10:19 AM

^^^ you guys forgot BB King, ZZ Top, and Jeff Beck, then regular Beck, then Prince. Sick chops on all them legends.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2012 10:19 AM

Clapton... Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. No Style.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2012 10:20 AM

this has turned into a funny discussion

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2012 10:22 AM

Kool And The Gang are opening the shows at MSG.

Posted by texastab | January 6, 2012 10:27 AM

C'mon now, who hasn't cranked up "Runnin' with the Devil" and sung along? Plus, those first 2 albums still sound crisp today. Nice production and engineering...

Check out Paul Gilbert's playing on the Mr.Big demos, end of story!

This must be just like living in paradise.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2012 10:42 AM

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2012 10:56 AM

Everyone knows Paul Gilbert is the greatest living guitar player. Everyone knows!

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2012 10:57 AM

EVH stole every lick from Tobin Sprout.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2012 10:58 AM

Oh yeah? Well Vito Bratta and Reb Beach currently ARE cleaning toilets. So there.

One of the best concerts I ever saw was Van Halen at the Civic Center - in 1983 - 30 years ago. I still have autographs somewhere. These guys have too much baggage, and the band killed the brand once MTV came along, they stopped being a rock band and became a pop band. But the early material, especially live versions, fucking rule. But matt valentine and Michael Gibbons are better guitarists, Eddie has great style and technique and flash, but he stops there, and doesn't innovate. And without Michael Anthony, unless he doesn't want to be involved, its lame. Can't blame them, 100 million bucks isn't chump change.

Posted by nygrump | January 6, 2012 11:13 AM

REAL FANS KNOW VAN HALEN 3 IS THE BEST VH ALBUM.
