Yasiin Bey on stage with Black Star (more by Zach Pollach)
Black Star

Yasiin says:

I hope everyone will have a great 2012! Alot of things to look forward too. Especially when BlackStar will be getting out their album/Mixtape out and a new G.O.O.D music compilation album coming out spring. Let it be a Yasiin Bey year!
One of the world's most influential muslims Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def) will start the Yasiin Bey year by helping pay tribute to the late Gil-Scott Heron as part of the Indelible Festival which goes down at Highline Ballroom in NYC on 1/6...
INDELIBLE FESTIVAL is dedicated to Gil Scott-Heron and Gordon Parks, with a tribute to Living Legend Jimmy Scott.

Indelible is dedicated to those who inspire and influence young people and, by their example, make a difference in the world. Jill Newman Productions created the Indelible Series two years ago, presented by the New York Public Library.

The great jazz vocalist Jimmy Scott will also be performing at the show, alongside ?uestlove, Bilal, Robert Glasper, Cecil Taylor, and many others. Tickets are still available.

Reminder: ?uestlove ALSO DJs SOBs tonight (1/3).

Bey recently introduced the cast of Fela! the musical in San Francisco. Video of that is below.

He changed is name to Yasiin Bey?
Bad career move Mos-Def... Your new name sounds like some fellow who works at Momouns.

Loved watching him try to blather and hem and haw about Osama Bin-Laden to Christopher Hitchens and then completely miss Hitchens repeatedly calling him "Mr. Definitely."

His mic is corny. Hate on artists who use weird looking mics.

Mos, just stop it already. all of this. pretty much everything you;ve done in the past 6 or 7 years, if not more. Remember when you were on Rawkus and you just went hard on every track, as a rapper? yeah, do that...instead of 90 diff. things in a mediocre fashion.

It's funny when people say it was a mistake for Yasiin to change his name. I wonder who or what you are referring too when you say "Mistake". He didn't make this change for his hip hop/music career or his acting career, or his fans...he made the change for himself. He is not Drake, or Lil Wayne or any of these other rappers in the game who are fighting everyone including themselves to stay on "Top", (which there is no such thing). He is grounded in his craft as a true artist. For those of you who just started listening to him or are occasional hip hop heads, please listen and read the lyrics to "The Tournament" by Yasiin Bey and you'll understand what the game is all about from his perspective. But if you don't understand at least a small fraction of who he is through his music, then you might not get it. Walk, Learn, Grow. Peace!
