Don Cornelius

Don Cornelius, the creator of TV's "Soul Train," has died at the age of 75.

Los Angeles police say the TV host/producer died of self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.

A press information officer at the Los Angeles Police Department told CBS Radio News that police responded to a call of a shooting at Cornelius' home. There is no suspicion of foul play.

"Soul Train" debuted on television in 1971 and ran until 2006. Cornelius produced the show and was its host from 1971-1993. -[CBS News]

Its always sad when someone who was part of something this influential passes on to another plane, but considering these circumstances it is definitely that much sadder. Rest in power Don Cornelius, Soul Train will be forever an essential part of soul music at one of its most pivotal moments. - BBG

The Times' sources refuse to rule suicide quite yet, as they've reported a neighbor called the police when shots plural were heard.

RIP

Either way this story turns out, it will be a sad ending. After watching the special about the history of Soul Train, I respect what he was able to accomplish.

I'll always give this guy credit for introducing me to half the bands I love today. I still love to watch Soul Train performances on youtube.

You have GOT to be kidding me. Say it ain't so Don (R.I.P.)! Not to jump to any conclusions but, if it was suicide, you've got to wonder why folks like him do it. I think he still controlled the rights to all of the Soul Train archives, which you'd hope was worth something. Really sad if he couldn't hold on to any reason to keep living.

Even as a music lover and NYer this does NOT interest me in the least. CBGB's is dead and now people can walk around in their dumb John Varvatos suites thinking they are rock n roll.
