LDR

"Rolling Stone asked me to speak about Lana Del Rey. I wanted to know how big my participation in the piece would be-was it substantial or just a quote? Just a quote, they said, to which I replied that I wasn't super interested. Which was a lie. I have a lot to say about her, but no sound bites. You see, Lana Del Rey is exactly what I was hoping to inspire when I took on the male rock establishment almost twenty years ago with my debut record, "Exile In Guyville.""... [Liz Phair]
Read the rest of Liz Phair's piece at the Wall Street Journal.

And speaking of LDR, who recently performed on Letterman, Bon Iver wasn't the only musical guest on Saturday Night Live last night. Lana Del Rey, who was on two weeks earlier, came back to discuss her famous performance on Weekend Update with Seth Meyers. Check out the video below...

oh god now liz phair thinks anyone gives shit? she's just using this "moment" to get her career kick started again. her new album sux bad asshole.

equally boring chix. it's ok to be "anti-establishment" as long as you don't suck, or as long as you haven't lost your edge.

lana sux, liz lost it. sorry girls.

people didn't hate on her b/c she's weird. it was because she is a god-awful musician (and a blatant marketing push for more audio crap the world doesnt need)

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2012 2:17 PM

217 is a stupid cunt.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2012 2:22 PM

I loved Exile in Guyville, but Phair has the worst fucking voice in the history of music. Not only that, but whatever that album was supposed to inspire was pretty much negated by how soft she subsequently got. Why should anyone care about some girl who exploded out of college with all manner of feminist dogma and then revealed what a lie it all is as she grew the hell up in the real world?

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2012 2:25 PM

Guys, who would you rather bone? Lana or Liz? That's the important dialogue here!

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2012 2:59 PM

Phair remains "a persona completely unrooted in substance". Albini could've been describing Lana Del Rey as well, speaking of pandering sluts.

y they go with kristen wiig instead of abbey elliot \o_O/

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2012 3:02 PM

This was actually perfect. Thought they were going to pile on her like every other "critic" out there. This was probably one of the more clever things they've done in recent memory. I'd rather watch her than Bon Iver. There is something completely off-putting when a guy apparently can sing an entire song and have not one hint of bass in his voice. Again, it's easy to pile on an act like her...but I never see any criticism for hip hop acts who go out there and embarrass themselves on a nightly basis. I guess if she played a pre-recorded track and vocal and yelled over it, she would be consider a true artist and not subject to criticism.

Posted by TheSloot | February 5, 2012 3:02 PM

Phair sums it up nicely: being heard is all that matters.

Quality, artistry, actually having something interesting to say? Not so much.

"Feminism" has officially been declared the national excuse for women who don't have talent.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2012 3:13 PM

I think that my grandma used to like Liz Phair. So, she must have been kind of cool and relevant like once upon a time, right?

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2012 3:22 PM

"This was probably one of the more clever things they've done in recent memory"

Only a typical BV commenter idiot would think that skit was clever or well written.Probably why today's hipser bklyn comedy scene is so fucking bad.

Case in point in that skit where she says all the artists that changed their names. Ummmm yeah genius writers but none of those artists changed their names AFTER their first records came out and sucked big time. Then they tried to appropriate some hipster bullshit identity that was completely false.

Funny, oh deae, but isn't that Jenna from 30 Rock?

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2012 4:51 PM

Exit in Guyville was an amusing record. But everything that came after? NO, THANK YOU.

Lana Del Rey is a pretty girl who is perfect for this current music climate of ours: no integrity, no chops, no substance. Just toss a lot of money into production and image, shake it up and there you have it.

kristen wiig is hot even if she is being stroked by a drummer

Liz Phair's views on LDR in Rolling Stone: the ultimate bird cage liner

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2012 6:14 PM

i would rather bone lana. liz phair would probably only let you jerk off on her.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2012 8:59 PM

Hey wait a minute, that's not Lana. That's Kristin Wiig.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2012 10:20 PM

Exile in Guyville was an amazing record no matter what people think of Liz Phair. Obviously the rest of her records were not so great. Still, Exile in Guyville is a masterpiece.

I finally listened to that video games song. It's really awful, but, at the same time, there's something mesmerizing about it. Weird.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2012 10:56 PM

Thanks 2:03! I turned safe search off and it was pretty awesome. Lana Del Rey has nothing on that.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2012 11:10 PM

i'd drench LDR with all of my stuff. she's be dripping and loving it. what a filthy pig she is. hawt.

4:32 - David Bowie changed his name after his first record.

@2:03
"IT DOESN'T HELP THAT LIZ PHAIR IS BASICALLY A SOFTCORE PORN MODEL WHO HAPPENS TO MAKE MUSIC:"

I think that helps tremendously.

Gives me the heebie jeebies

LDR was just quoted saying that she won't record another album hahahahahaha. such a PR slut

Posted by Anonymous | February 6, 2012 1:10 PM

I'm sorry but there are so many awful, not-so-talented MALE singer/songwriters out - like that guy XIU XIU.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhsIcUf36c4 or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmIQwII1g6Q

Tell me that song isn't just as cloying and overwrought as any of that girl's? For godsake he named his album "Dear God, I Hate Myself"

And no one rakes him over the coals... He gets "heard". The misogynistic references to how you'd 'do her' or who is more f-able is really sick - Liz Phair might have a point.

Posted by Anonymous | February 6, 2012 1:50 PM

@ 4:32, I like how everyone just assumes that poster on here is some Williamsburg hipster and then makes a statement with no basis of fact. I am neither by the way. I'm not even a fan of the writing on SNL right now. I said it was more clever than what is usually on the show, which isn't saying much. It at least got a laugh from me, which most Kristen Wig sketches don't usually get. But I guess comedy is not subject to taste at all. I'm not even aware of what the "brooklyn hipster comedy scene" is, or that there is one. I would imagine irony plays a large part in it though. Why don't you tell everyone what is funny, because it obviously is the one and true comedic form. Then we can just ban everything else.

Bad singers are bad singers
Let the market decide
And no need to "underwrite" (e.g. Liz' supporting LDR just because she's a woman). That's as ignorant as the opposite (dismissing because she's a woman).

Posted by Anonymous | February 6, 2012 2:16 PM

4:32 is the more typical BV commenter. talking mountains of shit, completely out of their ass with such an astoundingly conceited cocksure attitude that is totally incongruent with how completely wrong they are about everything.

this person cannot possible be over the age of 15. if they are, they are likely drunk, an idiot, or both.

Posted by Anonymous | February 6, 2012 9:17 PM

I always thought that I was the typical BV commenter. I check in here a handful of times a day and I leave a comment or two for my own amusement. Sometimes they're serious. But usually they're flippant. I've probably left pro and anti everything comments because in the few seconds it takes me to see what bands are playing and what have you, it's nice to know that you can upset the kind of losers who take this stuff seriously.
