Is this (and more) what SOB's is in for tonight?
Native Tongues

HipHopDX: The Native Tongues reunion show tonight is initiated by the Jungle Brothers. How did the whole show come about?

Mike G (of the Jungle Brothers): I'm good friends with one of the promoters, Big Jeff. They wanted to pay homage to us in a certain extent and represent one time for New York because we haven't performed in New York for such a long time. We just had wanted to hook up an official Jungle Brothers show and hopefully get some of the other guys to come and that's really what it is. Letting people know Jungle Brothers are back and then also saying, "We want this Native Tongue family to live." And now we putting out a call. We told the brothers to come through, represent.

In true hip hop fashion, the list of "invited guests" to tonight's Jungle Brothers reunion show at SOB's includes the entire Native Tongues crew, aka De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Monie Love, Black Sheep, Leaders of The New School "and more". No word as to who will actually show though. Here's to hoping it's all of them, though unfortunately at this point only those with a ticket will get to find out in person (the show is sold out).

First Serve

In related news, 2/3 of De La Soul have formed First Serve, a new crew that will welcome their debut LP on Duck Down on April 2nd.

'First Serve' is many things, but at its heart it is the story of two young boys from Queens, New York with big dreams and larger rhymes. Two friends, Deen Whitter (aka Plug 2 / Dave) and Jacob 'Pop Life' Barrow (aka Plug 1/ Pos), friends from seventh grade, are by their own admission, "different, but the differences seem to complement everything we do." Their name 'First Serve' comes from their motto, "First come, First Serve, get what you deserve."

After years of laying down demos and mixtapes on the hustle in the hip-hop game, we get the next instalment from their world in the form of the 'We Made It' skit. All the hard work has finally paid off - Jacob and Deen have hit the big time signing to Goon Time Records to become the next new thing to hit the airwaves.

You know when they say "special invited guests" instead of here who is guarenteed appearing it means that "Hey we know if we just said it was Jungle Brothers the show would not sell well". Doubtful any of those big invited names are showing up.

fake-parody raps aren't funny, this wont be played on the radio or on anti-radio places.
trugoy as rick ross and pos as will.i.am isn't really that cool, on some boring production, just do a de la soul album, right?

I might actually come out to the show if that happens. That crew consistently put on the best hip hop shows I've ever attended, would be a lot of fun to see/hear again

So as for the Native Tongues it was only Charlie Brown, Dinco D, Dres and Sadat X that showed up. This was seriously the most overbooked show I have ever been to. It was horrible, no one could move and was a definite fire hazard. Also they didn't the stage until 1215am and they had a list of no name acts who were pretty wack and the host one of the dudes from UMC's was annoying as fuck. But the Jbeez did put on a great show.

Bummer.

Not as cool as when Tribe Called Quest performed at the Knitting Factory months before their documentary came out, that
was way more of a reunion type of show.

It would take a lot of money to put De La and Tribe to hit the stage together + the Jungle Bros - who are now the real black sheep of the Native Tounges.

I am not familiar with the current status of the affiliated parties. Are De La and Tribe no longer down? What's the deal with the JBs? Have they wronged their bredren?

no Chi Ali?

Posted by Anonymous | February 8, 2012 2:07 PM

@10:39: Where she at?

Posted by Anonymous | February 8, 2012 2:44 PM

they wouldn't let anyone in from about 10:00 on; according to people stepping outside for a smoke, it was beyond crowded and the openers were terrible. plus I just noticed De La's touring Europe right now, so that's pretty lame false advertising on the flyer.

2+ hours to take the stage? Really? Native Tongues? What! This was so bad. So jam packed, nobody could move - but I will say that everyone was pretty frigging nice about it- no shoving or any bullshit in the audience. I'm just going to try to erase this mess from my mind and stick with some late 80's Mars memories instead. I left my friends in there after being there for an hour and a half and waited for them at a nice bar around the corner on Troy and had a couple of really good corpse revivers. I don't wait 2 hours for anyone. Nope.
