a pic of Guns N' Roses soundcheck @ Hiro Ballroom (via the Shaltzes)
Guns n Roses

Guns N' Roses' Fashion Week run of shows, that hit Webster Hall (aka the Ritz) last night (more about that later), actually also includes a private Fashion Week show at Hiro Ballroom tonight (2/16). Steve Lewis talked to Nur Khan, the man behind it, about the show, the venue and the Electric Room where Nur is throwing events too...

The rumor was that the show was going to be at The Electric Room but it got too big a thing and now it's at Hiro. In the future, you plan on doing a lot of shows at The Electric Room. How do you shows there....logistically?

I just did my first show there the other night. I remove furniture in front of a fireplace and half of the room. Set the PA and backline up in front of the fireplace - very similar to what I created with the Rose Bar sessions. You get the idea. You were at some of them. I see The Electric Room as a better fit for emerging bands. I'm doing this at Hiro; it's sort of my two cents into the goodbye. The town is losing another rock and roll room. I'm going to have to build another. We'd still be at Don Hill's if he hadn't died. This show at Hiro is all out ...confetti canons, arealists. It's the last hurrah before Mark Packer takes Hiro and Matsuri over and does what he does to it.

For real FUCK this shit hole. ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with Linsanity.

Posted by Anonymous | February 16, 2012 7:18 PM

enjoy the cumulative hour of instrumental wankery by the hired Guns.

Posted by "3 hour show" | February 16, 2012 7:19 PM

KHAAAAANNN!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | February 16, 2012 7:34 PM

I don't mean to be a typical miserable BV commenter.... but, jesus christ, I absolutely despise Hiro. They are incapable of having a show there that doesn't feel like some corporate sponsored bullshit show.

Posted by Anonymous | February 16, 2012 7:40 PM

Hiro is a good room, and the New Orleans bands booked in there are always a good time. Sound is good, open space, good location - it'll be missed.

Posted by Anonymous | February 16, 2012 7:46 PM

Nur is the biggest scum in NYC night life only second to the "great" Paul Sevigny.

NUR YANN

HA!

so the smallest most intimate show GNR ends up doing this week ends up not being Roseland, Terminal 5 or even Webster Hall. It ends up being an invite only gig for the fashionistas and no real fans.

That kind of negates the whole sincerity of the 'up close and personal' club tour this past week for the fans doesn't it?

The venues kept getting smaller but were all still within a reasonable size comparison to each other.

The Hiro is way smaller than Webster Hall. WHen they get to the smallest room, it's not for the fans.

I would hate to be a GNR fan right now after spending $125 thinking that the Webster Hall show was the smallest venue they were playing this week.

Suckers!

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 12:12 AM

This just in:

GNR will be playing the bodega on the corner of 12th St and Avenue B tomorrow night. Invite only.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 12:15 AM

this makes perfect sense actually.

A fake band playing for fake people

brilliant!

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 12:21 AM

absolutely perfect audience for them.

most of the fashion crowd there won't even know the difference between this line up of the new GNR and the original real band.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 12:23 AM

Hiro Ballroom makes Webster Hall look like Madison Square Garden.

The only thing smaller would be my living room.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 12:24 AM

We don't need another Hiro...

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 1:29 AM

All we need is hummus.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 2:07 AM

@1212 too bad hiro is one of the worst venues in the tri-state area.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 7:35 AM

The Axel Rose band at Hiro... sounds awful

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 7:50 AM

@10:21 this man speaks the truth. fuck these people and fuck gnr.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 7:54 AM

7:35, you mean worse than Roseland, Terminal 5 and Webster Hall?

No, I don;t think so.

Nice try to attempt to make yourself feel better.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 9:02 AM

902 hiro ballroom is 100% worse than every venue you mentioned. why do you think no one good ever plays at hiro ballroom, even though it's a perfectly adequate alternative to MHOW/bowery/gramercy theatre/etc.? because it fucking blows as a venue. horrible acoustics; terrible bar situation.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 9:39 AM

The few times I've ever been to Hiro, there's always been delayed door times, late set starts, and abominable beer selection.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 9:40 AM

I've had great times and seen remarkable shows at Hiro. Sad to see it change.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 9:41 AM

Hiro always had good acoustics and great sound.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 9:42 AM

Anyone who lives in NYC and has a bitch about Roseland, Terminal 5 AND Webster Hall really needs to go the fuck back to Ames Iowa and work the corn.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 9:46 AM

Terminal 5 is the best venue in NYC.

Posted by Iowa boy | February 17, 2012 9:54 AM

^ nice to see you back, Michael Sosa

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 9:55 AM

Hiro used to be soooo good

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 10:20 AM

The reason no one ever plays at Hiro is not because it sucks, it is because it is a private venue that is part of the hotel and therefore not part of the Bowery presents, etc real club circuit.

It has mostly invite only shows, and sporadic live shows open to the public, but it is not a 'real' venue like the others mentioned.

And if you are trying to convince yourself into thinking that it wouldn't have been one hundred times better to see them at the little Hiro ballroom than Webster Hall you are only fooling yourself.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 10:27 AM

yeah, 9:39, your right, I would have much rather seen GNR in one of those larger venues than that shitty little tiny really up close and personal Hiro venue.

What was I thinking?

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 10:29 AM

Capacity

Roseland 3500

Terminal 5 3000

Webster Hall 1500

Hiro Ballroom 700

ha ha ha fake GNR fans

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 10:32 AM

the joke is that 10:29 spent money and minutes of life on GNR, regardless of what venue.

for this you deserve to be bitch-slapped by a midget in a leotard, 10:29.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 10:41 AM

@10:29
Is that you Michael Sosa?

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 10:42 AM

I went to the Webster Hall G n R show.

Fucking awful.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 11:33 AM

I went to Webster, T5, and Roseland. All 3 were embarrassing. Axl needs to retire.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 11:36 AM

Hiro Ballroom was a great venue.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 11:42 AM

LCD was special

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 11:50 AM

methinks 10:29 was being sarcastic

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 11:59 AM

11:36, if you really went to all three club shows you wouldn't be saying they were all embarrassing, because after the first, or certainly the second one you wouldn't sit through ANOTHER one of the same three hour set would you?

I'll bet you weren't at any of them.

The only people that would go to all three of those and spend NINE total hours with Axl and his fake GNR would be so delusional and have such bad taste that they would actually say that all three were great.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 12:01 PM

12:01 makes sense

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 12:02 PM

went to one of the club show... it was ... very..... boring

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 12:04 PM

I went to the Webster Hall show. Fun to see Axl sing the hits, but that concert was way too fucking long. If your show is going to be 3.5 hours, you should trim it down to 2.5 hours by axing the solid 1 hour worth of instrumental jam interludes and guitarist highlight solos that comprised roughly one third of the setlist.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 12:06 PM

I am convinced you hipsters do not understand how to have fun. This is why you only listen to hyper-intellectual music and curse off anything that has to do more with pure emotion or feeling, like hair bands and rap music (that isn't being rapped by Danny Brown). Some of us know how to have a good time and get laid by chicks without brown hair and glasses, and we choose to do so. Give it a rest. Or keep complaining, I don't give a fuck; it's just pathetic to watch.

Posted by Fashionista | February 17, 2012 12:09 PM

I've seen G N R cover bands, and I went to the Webster Hall show. The cover bands actually put on a better show than Axl.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 12:10 PM

Why are people talking about Axl Rose on this blog? Who cares!

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 12:11 PM

12:09 LULZWUT?
You spent that much effort to write that many word to say absolutely nothing? Jew beddy talempte mang

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 12:21 PM

Webster Hall fucking sucked. I bet the Hiro show was better.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 12:30 PM

so I get it now, going to see fake Guns n Roses gets you laid by blondes without glasses.

Thanks for explaining.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 12:33 PM

I Used to Love Them

But I had To Skip Them

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 12:34 PM

ironic, trimming all the excess of the giant stage, pyro, platforms and visuals but not cutting down the length of the show forces people to endure the band as is in a tight space, exposes them as a pretty crappy outfit.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 12:36 PM

the band was as fake and see through as the flimsy Ritz banner they had hanging over the Webster Hall sign. You could actually still see the Webster Hall lettering through the Ritz banner.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 12:37 PM

HA

How much was Webster Hall? $135

How much was HIro? FREEEEEEE

FREE ADMISSION to the rich elitist fashion people in a venue half the size of Webster Hall, while the working blue collar fans got to shell out big bucks for the larger venue.

Axl Rose. Man of the People.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 12:40 PM

wow, that Hiro show just negates the value of the other three shows being small club shows by comparison, and is a really sucky move on Axl's part.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 12:41 PM

I don't believe anybody on this blog went to G n R. If they did, they wouldn't be reading this blog. G n R is for illiterate losers.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 12:52 PM

compared to the literate high brow readership of this blog?

Hummus or Meh anyone?

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 1:07 PM

believe me there are plenty of people on this blog that went to see GNR. They just may not want to admit it here.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 1:08 PM

Who are the Modern Weepers? Please will somebody tell me who the **** are the Modern Weepers already?

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 1:09 PM

if they played the same setlist at hiro, that was probably a miserable show. hopefully they did a trimmed down, 10-song, hits-only version or else i bet the audience were stabbing their eyes out and putting their severed eyeballs in their earholes.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 1:18 PM

great article on NYMAG.com about some NYFW chick trying to bang Axl at Hiro Ballroom last night.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 1:32 PM

I just read that. It's not great It's stupid, juvenile, embarrassing and egotistical.

It's just some boring corporate chick charmed with herself who is writing about the fact that she is not a groupie and wouldn't even know what to do if she had the chance. As boring as the show probably was.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 1:59 PM

Wow, someone who was at the fake bands show for fake fans taking about how she wasn't a groupie and didn't have sex with anyone there.

This is all adding up quite nicely.

Rock N Roll where have you gone?

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 2:00 PM

more that's said about this weeks GNR the more embarrassing and pathetic the whole thing seems to be

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 2:02 PM

soundcheck looks amazing. Thaks for the pic

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 2:02 PM

So, Colin P Fitz, Michael Sosa, and Axl are in a lifeboat, and there are only 2 lifejackets ....

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 2:11 PM

I was at the term 5 show and that one guitarist with the fancy pants on was such a ham.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 2:16 PM

Axl sucked at Webster Hall. Worst show I've ever been to.

Posted by Tommy | February 17, 2012 2:37 PM

Axl was great, despite the lack of every other original GNR member. When someone on here says "Axl sucked last night" that's when I know they're lying or trolling.

He still has the voice, can still hit all the necessary notes.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 2:43 PM

159 you must hate your dad so much. it was a fun read. especially since the entire time you're just thinking 'the dude is a fucking disaster, and this girl is probably really hot.'

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 2:49 PM

Axl can't sing anymore. He's a disgrace to humanity.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 3:14 PM

I went to the Webster Hall show. It sucked. Hiro Ballroom probably sounded better.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 3:15 PM

trolls trolls trolls

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 3:18 PM

I just got a refund from ticketmaster for the Roseland show. I told them they sucked and they understood.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 3:24 PM

324 cool story bro

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 4:30 PM

I really, REALLY hope that Axl Rose feels compelled to google his name and come across this thread. And I hope he reads my comment right here.

Axl, you listening? ......

Suck my left ball. I spent a pile of good money to see GNR several times this week, and you did not deliver. I ain't 17 anymore, I got a job and I don't appreciate having to wait for your ego to show up around midnight on a working night. And, fuck man, I understand you wanting to give the fans their money's worth but really cut the set down, trim the fact, leave them wanting more. I left wanting pancakes, not an encore. You don't like what I have to say? Do it better next time.

Now, go slap a girl, call up Slash and get your shit in order.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 4:57 PM

2:49, if she was hot, she would have ended up getting laid that night since she was obviously trying to.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 5:49 PM

Axl is gay.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 5:49 PM

Would I rather endure food poisoning for +$100 in a 3000 cap. venue or for free in an 800 cap. venue?

The answer is I'D RATHER AVOID FOOD POISONING ALTOGETHER.

Fuck this fat bitch and his massive ego (and puny penis)

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 6:31 PM

549 pt. 1 - you know so little about gender relations that it's a joke.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 6:31 PM

You're all full of shit. Act like you don't know every single word of November Rain/Welcome to the Jungle/Paradise City/Sweet Child O' Mine/etc. in the back of your head. If you like music, you liked Guns N' Roses at some point. Fucking hipsters. Go have buttsex with Toro Y Moi.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 6:33 PM

LOL buttsex.
What are you, 5? Eat your peas.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2012 7:09 PM

How anyone could describe Axl as anything but a psycho whiny prima donna is beyond me. Must be mid-40s cellar dwellers with moobs.

Posted by Anonymous | February 18, 2012 8:55 AM

Axl is really thin now.

Posted by Anonymous | February 18, 2012 10:26 AM

Who is he ? very good.

Posted by seslichat | February 18, 2012 11:21 AM

Axl is still fat. None of you were at any of the shows. I went to Webster Hall. Terrible show.
