""Occupying the original occupier" tUnE-yArDs in Columbus Circle." - Bill Bragin

Merrill Garbus in Columbus Circle - 2/9/2012
tUnE-YarDs

As tUnE-YarDs' show at Lincoln Center's Allen Room, part of the American Songbook series (which Bill Callahan played one night earlier), was coming to an end last night, the tweets started pouring in: "@brooklynvegan tUnEyArDs will be playing Columbus Circle within the hour. Get there!", "@brooklynvegan can u spread word that Tuneyards doing free show out by Lincoln Center fountain", "@brooklynvegan tune yards are playing in Columbus circle NOT lincoln center fountain", and "@brooklynvegan She said it was NOT a show. A gathering." Whatever it was, it included video cameras, and you can see what it looked like along with pictures from the actual show and the setlist from the show, below...

People are still occupying things?

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 10:16 AM

This is actually exactly how i imagined tune-yards would be

What I don't understand is how these American Songbook series shows keep getting more expensive but the token "indie" artists they bring in keep getting less compelling.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 10:25 AM

Wait, so she collects a paycheck at Lincoln Center, a place that tends to cater to the so-called "1%," and then protests? My mind hurts.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 10:28 AM

Yeah Merrill (like Merrill Lynch!) lets trash on Columbus. That dude did nothing! It's not like he helped spawn the country we live in, which, by the way, gives you the freedom to make loud obnoxious music. Yeah, what a prick.

Lets move to China! Communism rules there, so it must be better. It's not like the Chinese are moving to the US in droves or anything........

Is she actively trying to never have sex again? Who would want that, male or female.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 10:34 AM

This group may literally be the humankind's musical nadir.

This group and Bon Iver, and especially the critical acclaim they've enjoyed, have destroyed what was once a vital, expressive independent musical movement in America.

FUCK YEAH! Love Merrill Garbus.

Posted by mb | February 10, 2012 11:01 AM

They are so gross. I hate that I even share a planet with people who like this garbage.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 11:01 AM

I just don't understand the appeal. I tried listening to it, but couldn't get more than a minute or so before I had to stop. I don't understand the perverse need some people have to listen to something so bad.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 11:07 AM

20 minutes later, the occupation moved to shake shack where delicious burgers proceeded to occupy everyone's stomachs

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 11:10 AM

the point seemed less political (no real mention of the 99%/economic issues) and more that one shouldn't be scared to gather (or 'occupy') a public space as a group. which was interesting because even though no one was doing anything threatening (unless you're fearful of flags/facepaint) and it was a public space, a lot of folks didn't seem comfortable being there/kept their distance/immediately left when the cops came.

it was also an amazing show, lots of fun seeing how she & the band built each song live.

anyway, resume trolling.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 11:10 AM

11:01 expressed it perfectly

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 11:11 AM

11:10 - She made a mess of a public statue - that doesn't really sound THAT innocent.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 11:19 AM

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Merrill Garbus has fat tits

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 11:20 AM

What was in the cardboard box???

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 11:25 AM

11:25 the yellow police crime scene style occupy tape they wrapped the statue with was in the cardboard box.

Posted by ANON | February 10, 2012 11:29 AM

Worst music of all time, y'all. No hyperbole!

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 11:32 AM

What are the odds that it was all to sneakily film a music video without telling people that?

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 11:39 AM

The only thing that makes any sense to me upon seeing shit like this being well received is that irony has crawled so far up its own ass that people don't even recognize it as irony anymore. People have internalized bad taste as being good taste. Or something.

TUNE YANNS

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 11:41 AM

i saw them open for dirty projectors- another band i did not enjoy. they just aren't my thing, but whatev. i guess the kids like 'em

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 11:42 AM

that hair cut is making her look even more like a tard

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 11:44 AM

I know she reminds people of Talking Heads and 1980's SOHO lofts but jesus that "What's That About" thing not only ruins that song, it ruins this whole project.

Also, she sounds like she's 70 years old.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 11:44 AM

Breathless comment left on one of her YouTube videos:

"2 saxophones? briliant!! makes me wanna rethink everything about what makes a good live band"

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 11:47 AM

They're not my thing. Probably because I don't like androgynous land monsters literally screaming while his/her/it's 'band' plays the most raucous ridiculous array of notes that I've ever heard.

It's like when you hear someone playing the saxophone and you think, "Is he really good at Jazz? Or is he just fucking awful at playing the saxophone?"

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 11:50 AM

I think 11:40 described the appeal of this group and their ilk better than anyone else probably ever will.

I'll quote it so you don't have to scroll up:

"The only thing that makes any sense to me upon seeing shit like this being well received is that irony has crawled so far up its own ass that people don't even recognize it as irony anymore. People have internalized bad taste as being good taste. Or something."

"Jealousy and envy is everywhere"

-Notorious B.I.G.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 12:09 PM

My first visit to the comment section of brooklynvegan.com has reminded me why vegans sometimes get stereotyped as being arrogant, vain and or even downright bitter.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 12:11 PM

vegans are a pretty grumpy bunch. i think they are cranky cause they are starving

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 12:14 PM

Ok so I don't type the band name correctly but I do really like her music. Still, I totally agree with the comments about the irony of playing for the lincoln center 'elite' and then protesting after. Just play your music and get your paycheck. Don't make a bunch of fans from Williamsburg trek to columbus circle on a school night with vague allusions to a free show. Maybe if you did the protest as the lincoln center show then went outside and played for free it would makes more sense.

Posted by Actual Tune-yards fan | February 10, 2012 12:25 PM

It's not jealousy and envy, it's bewilderment at how anyone can think this is good. It's just bad music presented in a bad way.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 12:25 PM

I don't think it's bitterness; music fans are really perplexed by the appeal and popularity of stuff like this, that seems offensive to anyone's taste or sensibility.

Again, from 11:40:

"The only thing that makes any sense to me upon seeing shit like this being well received is that irony has crawled so far up its own ass that people don't even recognize it as irony anymore. People have internalized bad taste as being good taste. Or something."

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 12:27 PM

Pictures and article like these are why I am staggered that fans of this music make fun of metal. Project much?

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 12:30 PM

She's kind of belittling the occupy movement ?. I don't remember them having kistchy yellow & black custom flags & police tape..

Some say you need an open mind to appreciate Tune Yards.. I agree .. a mind so open that your brains have fallen out.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 12:33 PM

12:11 & 12:14 you actually think the people who COMMENT here are vegans?

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 12:36 PM

All that black and yellow makes it look like a Stryper concert was about to take place. Why didnt she hurl any bibles? LETDOWN.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 12:49 PM

Apparently Stryper showed up half way through and shut it down b/c of copyright infringement. It was very tense.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 1:43 PM

Yeah, everybody knows Stryper is pro PIPA. This was a dumb move on tYNEAYVAddakraDS! part.

The Allen room is named after Herb Allen - Founder of Allen and Company - probably the shadiest and most influential media investment bank. They have the Sun Valley conference every year. They took google public. It has a great view.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2012 10:21 PM

OK - enough with the face paint shit. It looks ridiculous. Either go all in - like some metal bands do or pack it up and go home. You look like a bunch of retarded football players.

the worst part about this whole evening was definitely her haircut

what is up with THAT?

Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2012 7:32 AM

Ah, New Yorkers. Gotta love 'em. (Or at least the Wall Street metalhead supermodel named Anonymous who has the best haircut in the world and thrives on venting personal dislikes through negative posting....)

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2012 12:13 PM

^ Clever. Shut up!

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2012 3:02 PM

Wow, lot of wacko posts. Tuneyards is great. They're a bunch of sweet kids playing music they love. Jazz, hell yeah. The guys of the group graduated from Oberlin Music Conservatory and play freakin spot-on. I'm sure they'd all feel sorry for the haters and tell them simply not to listen if they're experiencing such profound personal distress. The flipside of this, and of playing at Lincoln Center, is the age-old dilemma of indie art in the mainstream - you WANT the opposite-fringe audiences to hear.

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2012 3:24 PM

(Ah, New York trolls, can't live WITH 'em, can't mug 'em in Times Square anymore.)

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2012 8:45 AM

^ A Tuneyards tard cracking wise about mugging people? I don't suppose that could be considered troll-like behavior since your wrists are probably too perpetually limp to make into fists. I wonder if you put yellow paint on your face before engaging in such delusional flights of fancy.

It's a bummer to hear such hatred and misogyny about Tune-yards. I know them and they're great, talented, hardworking people. One of the funkiest, rawest bands in the business.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2012 4:27 PM

Fuckin losers

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2012 4:47 PM

I once knew John Wayne Gacy, and he was a great, talented, hardworking person.

And disliking the racket being humped as music by these imposters is not misogyny, it's accurate reporting.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2012 4:52 PM

@4:27 if you think tuneyards is funky, they you are a fucking moron. if you think it's "raw" then you must be cooking your salad. how stupid can you be, both for posting AND for being friends with such 1%er trash. it's a lame rich white chick putting on facepaint and playing with a sampler. I can't even count how many lame cliches of hipster shit they pull together into one megacliche. Someone else said it best: If you like this band you are an idiot.

Posted by Anonymous | February 28, 2012 10:42 AM
