Bruce Sprinsteen @ the Apollo (Springsteen.net)
Bruce

For those who were lucky enough to get tickets (a mix of celebrities, press and SiriusXM staff and subscribers), the show was a chance to see the E Street band play a two-plus-hour set in a venue a fraction the size of its upcoming stadium shows. Their show on Friday, March 9th included a couple of firsts for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. The gig a private show hosted by SiriusXM Radio and streamed on their E Street Radio channel (which BrooklynVegan Blog Radio host Nick Masi also hosts a show on), was their first at the Apollo Theatre. It was also the first full show with new sax player Jake Clemons, Clarence's nephew. The presence of the recently-departed Clarence and that of the stage's past stars were felt throughout the night. Those touches added some weight to the event, which otherwise focused on prepping the band for their tour behind the new, somewhat uneven Wrecking Ball.

The show started with a nod to James Brown's Live at the Apollo, with a version of its opening fanfare delivered by Springsteen (who called himself "the hardest working white man in show business"). Before the end of the night the band further paid tribute to the Apollo's legends by playing the Smokey Robinson-penned Temptations song "The Way You Do the Things You Do," Wilson Pickett single "634-5789" and Sam and Dave's "Hold On, I'm Comin.'" For the latter, the last song of the night, Bruce kneeled down while Steven Van Zandt draped a black towel over his shoulder and began to lead him off stage a la Brown's legendary cape routine. Bruce rushed back to the center to sing a few more rousing bars.

During "The Way You Do the Things You Do," which began as an a cappella number that brought the group's numerous backup singers to the front of the stage, Bruce flubbed a cue, which he joked about, clearly embarrassed, remarking "Aw I fucked it up." That segued into "634-5789," during which the boss ventured into the theater's boxes and balcony (video below).

Being a warmup show for the Wrecking Ball tour, and promotional show for the album, the set was naturally heavy on songs from that record. Some, like the title track "We Take Care of Our Own," and the Irish-inflected "Death to My Hometown," sounded quite good, with a shimmery Stax-like horn sound. Others--"Jack of All Trades," "Shackled and Drawn"--were patiently weathered by the crowd. But the vintage Bruce morsels were worth the wait: Darkness on the Edge of Town highlights "Badlands" and "Promised Land" and Born to Run classics "Thunder Road" and "Tenth Avenue Freeze Out" (sadly, the fever pitch highs of some of those songs were also accompanied by crippling feedback).

Personally, the highlight for me was "Mansion on the Hill," a quiet song off Nebraska, which Bruce fingerpicked, harmonizing with wife Patti Scialfa (Soozie Tyrell added some violin color, too).

Bruce stopped several times to shout out Clarence, beckoning the crowd to cheer the missing member during a roll call. Again at the end, he called for cheers after stopping "Tenth Avenue Freeze Out" after the line "When the change was made uptown/And the Big Man joined the band."

He also joked about his recent Fallon performance, remarking "This is our first non-televised gig. Wiggle wiggle wiggle."

The band has another tour warm-up show in Austin next week at SXSW, where Bruce will give the keynote speech which you'll be able to stream online. They're back in the NYC area for shows at the Izod Center and MSG starting on April 3rd (and another at Newark's Prudential Center on May 2nd).

Videos from the show, including Bruce venturing into the theater's balcony, and the set list are below...

Who, among current performers, is as great a showman as Bruce? Prince, maybe...if you have never seen him live - take it from a guy who has seen him 148 times - it is worth it. Sorry I was not at the Apollo...

Springsteen is the man

There's a reason his initials are B. S.!!

Anyone who likes Bruce Springsteen is a straight-up old-ass cracker racist. Truth!

bruce is a phony and that thing on his head comes from the tail of a pony

Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2012 1:17 AM

Springsteen music is pig slop and donkey poop swirled together to a rich consistency and then spread over pitas like hummus. He's now in his fourth decade of turning animal excrement into a delightful snack.

Bruce Springsteen owns 16 slaves. Nine of them are under 14. His endeavors will be recreated in the upcoming Human Centipede 3.

I sure hope that the Holmes had their shit together and snatched the wallets purses and jewelry from all those white people as they walked briskly back to the Metro North 125th St. station.

Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2012 8:12 AM

If you've seen Springsteen 148 times, I'm not even going to trust your opinion about whether it's raining outside.

Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2012 8:13 AM

The funniest thing about going to a show at the Apollo, when it is a " white people act" is how the whole crowd corrals together back to the subway. They think it's like a nature documentary. The one gazelle strays from the herd and is immediately taken down by a pride of wild African lions. Stick together! Strength in numbers.

Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2012 8:30 AM

yeah we all know the apollo is only for black performers
so come on people.
in fact so is harlem- all of it.
and the rest of nyc

if it's not black its whack

Sirius satellite radio will cease existing in less than 3 years. It's an outdated medium. It was fun while it lasted though.

Listening to this show gave me goosebumps. I can't imagine how I would've felt if I was actually there! I love that the Boss has still got it! Wrecking Ball is great.

Posted by Sara | March 11, 2012 12:57 PM

I seriously hope this is not an indication of what the setlists in his tour are going to be like. This shit sucks.

Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2012 1:41 PM

Did anyone else try the chicken fried hummus?

Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2012 1:42 PM

^ Sara definitely needs a real man with a big boner to drill some sense into her hee hee. Bruce is a total dork, and like 107 years old at that.

Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2012 1:45 PM

1:42 I saw what you did there, you fucking racist.

No fried chicken hummus, but they did have watermellon hummus and grape soda, along with free Kool loosies.

a rare sight on BV.

Posted by ME | March 11, 2012 2:35 PM

Why the anti-white stuff in these comments? Is that necessary?

Posted by Heather Huston | March 11, 2012 3:23 PM

Wow luckily this was free. I'd be pissed if I paid to see this cock tease of a line up.

Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2012 4:57 PM

The comments in this thread pretty much confirm why I can't take BrooklynVegan seriously anymore. (Or at least the majority of its readers.) And I'm not even talking about the racist bullshit. (All the more reason why BV should make their readers REGISTER in order to make comments!!!!)

Go listen to your Dan Deacon or whatever. I'll take good music & fantastic live acts like Bruce Springsteen.

Popularity & being mainstream doesn't always equal mediocrity. Get over yourselves.

Posted by Matt | March 11, 2012 5:07 PM

I've cried about the comment section 148 times!!!!

Goofy old man Springsteen fans are as annoying as the Guided By Voices hippies.

Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2012 5:34 PM

@5:07 Wrong.

Popularity & being mainstream = mediocrity.

Fuck you and the 1993 Honda Civic you drive, Oldie Olderson.

Spins and 7 and a half inches get censored, but offensive racial epithets? Fine by BV's standards...

Hey Matt (@5:07)
What's your email address so we can continue this conversation offline? I figure, since you are all for registration on this site and all, which you would need to post your email address for (which of course you did NOT along with your comments, you hypocrite), you will have no problem putting your money where your mouth is.

Unless, of course, you are the one that's full of shit after all.

Spin-Doctors are offensive, and don't be a douche and claim you don't know what the 7.5 is about.

Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2012 5:53 PM

"offensive racial epithets? " like what? 'niggas' ? I hear blacks use that word every day in Harlem. I'm white so it's not pc? fuck that shit. I view it as common parlance. + what I said is true- that's why there are so many cops on 125th St.

2:34 has never been north of 96th St.
True fact.

Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2012 5:55 PM

Springsteen fans are worse than Deadheads. At least the Deadheads are too busy spinning and trying to score one for tonight's show to be anything other than breathing street art. Bruce fans are just douchebags and mediocre souls that don't know when to STFU.

5:47-- I don't mind giving Brooklyn Vegan my e-mail address for registration purposes, but for obvious reasons I'm not going to post it on a message board for all to see. (I don't understand how that makes me hypocritical. At least I'm using my name & not hiding being anonymous timestamps.)

But if you'd like to post yours I'd gladly respond.

And I'm 31 years old. I don't drive a car, actually. And I've been reading Brooklyn Vegan pretty much since its inception. So if I'm an "oldie olderson" now, I wasn't when I started reading this blog. I only say that b/c based on the maturity level of a lot of these posts, I'm assuming most of you are emotionally underdeveloped teenagers.

If you're blindly writing off the merits of musical acts simply b/c they're too old, or too mainstream, I really can't take you seriously. Sorry.

I'm sure most of you guys have never seen Bruce live so you really don't know what you're talking about.

The Brooklyn Vegan trolling is getting really annoying.

"If you're blindly writing off the merits of musical acts simply b/c they're too old, or too mainstream, I really can't take you seriously. Sorry", said "Matt" as he sorted through his newly bought U2 and Jane's Addiction records (LULZ).

Too much FAIL to contemplate. Hop on your bike (LULZ) and pedal back home, Dad.

THE Bullshit.

Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2012 7:28 PM

His band has always been just too big and too sloppy. I know there are people who swear by him and have seen him dozens of times, but why they want to hear the same old shit night after night is beyond me.

I do like the Hammersmith performance from the 70's more recently cleaned up and released on DVD, THAT I recommend. But this new stuff....shit sandwich... IMHO.

Why can't people just appreciate good artists anymore? Why's everything have to be about coolness?

You fucking cunts.

Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2012 1:17 AM

What does coolness have to do with mocking a band that has sucked for over 30 years? Go ride a stone pony bareback, 1:17. Ya piker.

Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2012 1:50 AM

Bruce has sucked since Regan was president. Sorry, but it's true.

Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2012 1:57 AM

Even Bruce sucking is about 35 times better than the average band posted about on here, pitchfork, etc. How many indie bands do you think you'd have to go through to find a musician that could remotely hang with the E Street Band for a show? I'm guessing over 100.

Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2012 2:53 AM

Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2012 10:58 AM

I'm not the world's biggest Springsteen fan but cannot understand why the general consensus here is that he has "sucked" for 30 years.

You guys don't think The Rising was a good album? Oh right, because you're all hipster indier-than-thou twats from Wisconsin who cannot possibly grasp the depth of that record. Instead you are convinced Bradford Cox is "a genius."

Morons.

Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2012 11:12 AM

^ I think that Springsteen has sucked for a while, and I can't stand any of the Deer bands either. So, wrong a second time, you judgmental douche.

Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2012 11:30 AM

I'm the last person on Earth who could be characterized as indier than thou. I don't even accept the concept of indie rock. There's only good music, bad music, and music that I just don't give a fuck about. Springsteen since the late 70's pretty much falls into the latter category. Would I bother to say he sucks? I don't know. But the band sure as hell peaked in the 70's, and that's kind of pathetic considering how much they've been fawned over at every turn since then while putting out pablum.

12:15 here my comment was for 12:07

Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2012 12:16 PM

The only differences between a Springsteen fan and a Deadhead are that Deadheads by and large have about 20-30 IQ points on Springsteen fans, Deadheads don't shower as frequently as Springsteen fans, Deadheads are not overweight loads, and Deadheads shut up and just enjoy the vibe eventually whereas Springsteen idiots need to prove to you how wrong you are, how right Bruce is, and why you're a jerk for not agreeing with them.

The obvious similarities are that they are insufferable to be around when pontificating about their demigod, they both waste all their money seeing their demigod perform (instead of actually investing it, or heaven forbid learning how to play an instrument themselves), and they both are too myopic to see how little quality their demigod's releases have had over the gross majority of their careers.

Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2012 12:32 PM

^ok..if that is so why did I pan a few of his albums...great argument bro.

Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2012 12:43 PM

People the likes of 12:32 are a alot like teenage girls. They like what the in-crowd likes and want to be surrounded by the queen bee. They don't use their brain to critically think and become an indivdual and instead believe the gossip floating around their local circles. After high school they are lost because they never learned how to critically think and appreciate what was in front of them.

See what I did there?

12:32 = "too myopic to see how little quality their demigod's releases have had over the gross majority of their career"

12:43 = "ok..if that is so why did I pan a few of his albums"

gross majority > a few. objective fact.

Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2012 2:09 PM

1:42 / 2:01 - There you go, projecting again. If you cannot form rational thoughts and explain them in a manner that others can understand, then you should go back to throwing things at moving cars or pissing on your friends (or whatever retards do these days for enjoyment). And if you cannot explain your assertions in an intelligent manner, no one else will ever take you seriously. No one else I say because you just continue to prove that guy's point about Springsteen fans being complete morons. You are the poster troll for that.

Prophetic, @12:32. And just like trained monkeys, the Springsteen fans walk right into the stereotype.

Just some observations as a casual observer to this thread and many others on BV. When someone doesn't like an artist ie:Springsteen many on here will resort to personal attacks or say jevenile things like he sucks, they suck whatever without discussing the merit of the artist. Why does he suck? Give a reason!

Resorting to personal attacks proves ignorance on the music subject. My belief is anyone who says an artist sucks probably has limited expierence on said artist. 12:07 is a great example. If you don't like Born in The Usa is because you heard Glory Days, Dancing in the Dark and Born in USA a million times on the radio? Yeah , you know what I don't like those songs either but the rest of the album is pretty solid and I am not going to berate someone who is a fan.

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2012 7:20 AM

^well said...you would think people who search out a page like BV would be more open to a music discussion and a little more savy than the average uneducated listener but nothing surpirses me on this sight unfortunatley.

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2012 7:43 AM

7:20 - you do realize that the exact same logic could, and should, apply to the fan as well as the non-fan. Just because a person posts something that could be meant to invite a more balanced, civil discussion because the poster does not "get it", or it is posted for comedic reasons, the fans of said artist ALWAYS resort to that same name calling / your mother / dickwad / etc. bullshit. It's old, it's tired, it's predictable, and it attracts the trolls like shit attracts flies.

It's pretty easy to be sanctimonious when your Anonymous. Just as easy as being a douche troll, obviously. I think that you (not you necessarily 7:20, more generally here) need to look in the mirror a lot more, or as my old friend used to say "take the cotton out of your ears and put it in your mouth for a change".

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2012 8:14 AM

8:07 ..7:20 here..I agree with the first paragraph of what you said it does happen both ways...I was just hoping for a more balanced discussion...I like to talk about music and the good and the bad of the artist. Of the 10 or so bands I really like or love I find at least something that I don't about the said artist I like. Every band has a less than stellar release or period.

Posted by not annonymous anymore.. | March 13, 2012 8:20 AM

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2012 8:23 AM

I hear ya 7:20 / 8:20. I guess your optimism hasn't been beaten out of you on here yet. To be honest, I gave up hope for civil conversation on here a long time ago. Sometimes I post things like I did here, I don't know why, just to send up a rescue flare. This place is like a playground with mostly little twerps that think that they are a lot bigger than they are. Inflated egos, inflated comments. Anyway, it makes the civil conversations kind of special when they arise out of the noise, like a daffodil through the sidewalk concrete.

Yup, 12:48 - you did so I guess you are correct!

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2012 12:49 PM

I don't know why I have to defend myself, but in all honesty, the only other post of mine that didn't have my name on it was the one at 12:14:

http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2012/03/bruce_springste_35.html#comment-864390

And that's simply b/c I forgot to write it in. I guess I'll be called a hypocrite for that.

But some of you people seem to be missing the point entirely. I never said I want us to start posting our e-mail addresses in our comments. I simply want to supply my address TO BROOKLYN VEGAN in order to REGISTER for a screen name, which I would then use for all my comments.

What's so hard to understand about that?! It seems to be the way most websites handle their comments section. Please don't tell me you're unfamiliar with the concept of on-line registration. People can't be THAT stupid.

And if we WERE all registered, we would be able to keep track of which comments belong to which registered user, instead of all these accusations of people posting under multiple guises, etc. (And if you want to get into a bitch fight with another poster, you can do so without having to address a million & one different time stamps.)

I'm trying to add my two cents in a civil manner, without resorting to personal attacks, which I realize I'm going to get mocked for. But whatever. I guess I have hope that this site could go back to being about the discussion of music instead of being a haven for trolling.

I feel dirty for even opening this thread a day later...

Posted by Matt | March 13, 2012 1:15 PM

What if Matt was One of Us?

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2012 1:23 PM

As good of an idea as site registration is, I can't help but say it'll take the ridiculous nature of commenting away -- and although the personal attacks would probably stop, I'd miss the absolute stupidity and randominity of some of the things posted here that often make me cringe/laugh after a shitty day.

Odd phenomenon, I realize, but honest nevertheless.
