b Bill Pearis

DBA crowd for JEFF the Brotherhood in Feb (more by Andrew St. Clair)
Jeff the Brotherhood

South Williamsburg DIY space Death by Audio will be five years old on March 31 and are throwing a birthday party for themselves featuring Neckbeard Telecaster, Grooms, Les Savvy Fav's Tim Harrington doing something solo, and Free Paint (Deerhoof's Greg Saunier and Flying's Sara Magenheimer). And maybe some special guests? Who can say?

While the 31st is the official anniversary party, all of March has been loaded with semi-official ones. Saturday (3/24) is a stacked bill, with Widowspeak, Eternal Summers, Bleeding Rainbow and Shark?. I actually saw the first three last week in Austin at various SXSW shows (like our Hotel Vegan day party on Friday 3/16) and all were in fine form.

There's also Sweden's Echodeck on Sunday (3/25),  reunited '80s Aussie band Feedtime on March 29, and  Little Lungs (one-off reunion gig) with Nouns (Marissa Paternoster of Screaming Females, who did part of the DBA stage mural, btw) on March 30.

While their were shows at what they called the Sugar Factory earlier (I remember seeing Dirty on Purpose and Vaz there during CMJ 2005), March 31 was the first show under the name Death by Audio (part of the space which Oliver Ackerman had been using since 2002 for his effects pedals company). I've seen so many memorable shows there (JEFF the Brotherhood, Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, METZ to name just a few) over the last five years. Here's to many more.

Full schedule at Entertainment4Every1's site.

Have always been a fan of them. Good work guys. Period.

Posted by SAP Training | March 24, 2012 1:09 AM

that club is like your 13 year old brother: copies every trend in every magazine, is completely full of himself, and never offers anything of any substance or value.

Sound is band, price is expensive, people who work there are the type of trash that makes NYC a worse place to live. But the name is cool, brah.

Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2012 6:57 AM

wow 6:57 you are the saddest dick around.

- dba is not a club, but a performance space
- if anything, they are your older brother who knows whats cool before the rest of the world does. will buy you smokes and porn and get your drunk.
- could very well have the cheapest door prices in the tri-state area
- and the best quality about dba is that its not you

congrats to death by audio. that place rules

6:57pm is dead on.

"Look at us, pretending to be hardcore punks."

Well-adjusted, no-heart trendoid bitches.

I bet if a new band (hardcore or not) from the city handed out 100 palm-sized fliers with a download code on each flier at that show they'd be lucky if 1 or 2 people downloaded their music, and chances are they would be the only 1 or 2 cool as in down-to-Earth not hip/trendy/bitchin' people in the room.

'Majority of their "performances" are band-shows - it's a club.

Cheapest door prices? Try among the cheapest door prices, big deal. Their prices are a combination of cheap rent (or rent far cheaper than Manhattan rents) and what their crowds are willing to pay.

DBA: Fronting like an all ages hardcore venue but barely supporting hardcore since 200X (whatever fucking year it opened.)

Posted by D | March 24, 2012 6:57 PM

^ Well, what do you prefer then?

Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2012 7:09 PM

Death By Audio: Fronting like an all ages hardcore punk venue but barely supporting hardcore since 2007.

Posted by D | March 24, 2012 7:10 PM

What do I prefer? I prefer DBA closes and people who support real music including hardcore punk open a new, better all ages venue in this space. Or this place closes so I never have to see photos as ridiculous as the one above again. Stupid name for a venue, too, cuz it sounds like Death By Stereo who suck mooseballs.

These people are like the fucktards who pretended to be "punk" 1991-96 when Nirvana/Pearl Jam/Green Day/Offspring/Rancid broke big.

Posted by D | March 24, 2012 9:41 PM

Those are some pretty rude off comments. Probably from people who work or support Bowery Ballroom or Terminal 5.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2012 2:40 AM

2:40pm Are all commenters who reply to me as dumb as you?

First off, it's pretty rude of DBA to tout themselves as a DIY showspace yet barely support hardcore punk the fuckin' reason they exist cuz hardcore punk was the scene which created the idea of the all ages showspace and actualized it all over the country with Che Cafe, DC Space, ABC No Rio, etc., besides that it was the first genre of music/music community to create the concept of music shows being open to people of all ages not just people 18 or 21 and over which much live music has sadly regressed into.

Second I don't work or support Bowery Ballroom or Terminal 5. Fuck them for barely supporting hardcore, too. I boycott Bowery Presents. If I did work for either, why would I give a fuck about DBA? It's a pissant place in the middle of Brooklyn which has and will never cut into BB or T5.
It doesn't affect my livelihood either.

Last I despise the crowd in the pic cuz they're all fake hardcore punks co-opting hardcore punk with the crowdsurfing, just like the fuckers who went to Nirvana concerts and Lollapalooza did in 1992, two decades ago. Spare me the "I don't want them to be let in on my secret" shit, I don't want their mainstream attitudes watering down hardcore punk until it is just another form of music where no one thinks or feels, just like mainstream society. Almost too late if not for the precious few who keep the true spirit alive with doing shit no one else does, which these trendy fakeasses bitches will never do. I guarantee you when DBA closes 99% of that crowd will disappear into the ether of society and no one will give a fuck.

Oh yeah, another thing:

I rule the comments section in metal articles. Once I enter the discussion, I give it focus and I love that it tends to revolve around what I post. Most responses after I chime in are directed towards me an stir up some real talk, and I relish it. I relish one Anonymous Asshole after another taking shots at me. Call me a troll, I call it like I see it and I touch a nerve. At least I get some discussion going beyond one and two sentence comments cuz most of you are so mired in the text/Twitter/Facebook culture you can't post more than a sentence or two which is why your brains hurt when I write. Yeah, you're used to shit you see on your fuckin' iPhone, Android, blah blah blah (your device you'll blow $10G on in monthly payments and device upgrades from planned obsolescene over the next decade like a dumbass.) Well, I'm not texting here, I'm writing actual thoughts and feelings, so deal with it.

And deal with me being on here wherever I feel like it, am moved to write cuz I don't talk out of my ass.

I'm not your iPhone, Twitter, Facebook, or whatever else you can only read and write more than 10-140 characters on.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2012 10:27 AM

DBA is a fucking awesome venue, and anyone who is concerned that it's "fronting" like a "hardcore punk" venue has outed themselves as someone who cares way too much about their own presence in some bullshit scene. Let me guess: you played in Cerebral Ballzy or some other dipshit "hardcore punk" band for five minutes. Why don't you spare us your Internet relevance crisis and take it out on your dick in your mom's basement per usual?

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2012 12:22 PM

12:22 was kicked out of Cerebal Balzy because he couldn't play bass for shit. He's still upset.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2012 1:07 PM

you really seemed to be fixated with the "hardcore" "all ages" "DIY" aspect of things. you are right "hardcore" was the community that built the all ages aspect to venus. but that is not the only kind of music around. if you go to dba site () you will see that the shows are a hodgepodge of musical genres going beyond just hardcore. i believe even the hardest of hardcore punk would agree to expanding your horizons and look beyond just one type of anything. so excuse dba if one night of the week they host a show that doesn't consist of a stack of amps and a drummer with a 15 rack set.

the people in the picture look like they are having fun.

this is one venue celebrating their anniversary. not everyone has to care. and not everyone will. and they are fine with it.

congrats to dba. and to anyone who can do anything for five years!

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2012 1:34 PM

Cerebral Balzy is still maybe the single greatest band name of all time.

Oh, and the shoe meat? More like Taint.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2012 2:39 PM

9:53pm Wrong.

10:27pm Yeah I work in a supermarket in Queens, whatever makes you sleep better at night, unemployed stalker.

12:22pm DBA is fronting like a hardcore punk venue. It has all the characteristics and practices of one yet barely has any hardcore punk. I could give a fuck about my presence in what is far from a "bullshit scene", which is what the pic in this entry is. Thanks for being Exhibit B (after Exhibit A the pic in this entry) for my case that DBA hates or wants nothing to do with hardcore punk. How easy you people fall into a trap I don't even set.

Cerebral Ballzy? LOL. Bigger LOL that you say "some other dipshit hardcore punk band" as if CB is a hardcore punk band when they're just dipshit. Even bigger LOL that you think CB is hardcore punk and that's the only name you could come up with out of all the names. Someone gets his/her hardcore punk from Vice Magazine and/or Afro-Punk hmmmm???

Why don't you grow some balls to go with that oversized dick with limbs which is your body and put a name to the tough talk behind a computer? And come up with something better than I live in my mom's basement after you drink a Drano smoothie, jerkoff.

1:34pm I'm not "fixated" on anything, I just don't like a venue that fronts like it supports underground music when it barely supports the music which is the reason all the shit they book and Brooklyn Vegan exists. Do NOT insult my intelligence and tell me if you took away 1980s hardcore including NYHC (New York Hardcore since some people on here consider Cerebral Ballzy hardcore punk and might not know what the fuck I'm talking about), DBA would exist - it would not, deal with it. Also, where did I say DBA should book mostly hardcore punk or book it period? I'm saying it fronts like it supports underground music yet barely supports the biggest proponent of it.

So what they're having fun? Your point?

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2012 3:32 PM

I LOVE that D think he "gives focus" to threads. It's hillarious really. I mean the guy rants like a nutjob and it's ALWAYS off topic. "Gives focus", ha. I also like that he considers typing 'D' into the name box somehow less anonymous. The guy really is a honest to god shit for brains.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2012 3:33 PM

I do give focus to threads and am far from a nutjob. How am I "off-topic"? If anyone's off-topic, it's you talking about me not DBA, you insulting me, and some true nutjob rambling on about how I live in Queens, make $38 an hour like that's shit pay, work in a supermarket, blah blah blah.

Who the fuck are you to say that I am "less anonymous", Anonymous? At least I put a name to what I say unlike you.

The only shit for brains is you because if I'm this and that why are you responding to me? If I'm a fool, you're the fool who follows the fool thus the real fool.

Posted by D | March 25, 2012 4:06 PM

Posted by C | March 25, 2012 10:01 PM

10:00pm EUREKA! My first impersonator! I am truly flattered. I've made it hahaha.

9:59pm Jimmy Gestapo? As in THE Jimmy Gestapo from Murphy's Law the band that hasn't put out a good record since the first one and has been milking that one and the second one (released in 1986 and 1989 respectively) the past two decades?

I doubt it's you, but if it is, lemme ask you:

When is your Murphy's Law cover band you call Murphy's Law gonna finally put out a new record with new songs not covers or live tracks of old shit? Your last one came out in the final year of the second Giuliani Administration (2001.) Also when you gonna change the name to Jimmy's Law which it is since you're the only original member left in the band and the dudes who wrote the music you milk quit the band in 1988 (Uncle Al) and quit or left the band in 1999 (Todd Youth)?

Honestly, end it New Year's Eve 2013 the thirtieth anniversary of the band's first show. Have Uncle Al play the first half of the show (Murphy's Law) then Todd Youth play the second half (Back With A Bong!) then call it a day. You're played out, "The Party's Over" is right as you were done once Todd Youth quit or left.

Posted by C | March 25, 2012 10:42 PM

Yeah, yeah, yeah you, C, are impersonating BBG, Jimmy Gestapo, Frohawk, and of course moi.

'Thing is, you're doing it all wrong. Create a fake back and forth between me and you.

I hope Jimmy G. sees what I wrote above cuz I am dead serious with what I wrote.

Posted by D | March 25, 2012 10:52 PM

^seriously you said you have benefits (I guess health insurance), so look into therapy. You might find that the importance of Jimmy Gestapo's actions exists only in your head.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2012 10:58 PM

YOU need therapy considering you've been stalking me across multiple entries including the Deerhunter one and have a bizarre fixation on my income of all things.

As an anonymous who has not had any involvement in this back and forth, I must express my appreciation to "D" for putting an initial to his comments. In a sea of nameless morons, it's nice to be able to identify at least one moron as a unique individual.
