Of Montreal

Last night (3/30), of Montreal stopped in NYC for the first of two shows at Webster Hall, as part of their current tour. (The second one is tonight. UPDATE: It happened and pics are HERE)

Openers Hard Nips and Computer Magic got the audience pumped, but by the time Of Montreal came on it felt as though the floor of Webster Hall was going to collapse before the end of the show. Beginning with songs from their new album, Paralytic Stalks, the band released white balloons, which reflected multicolor lights as they were passed over the crowd.

The energy of frontman Kevin Barnes increased throughout the almost two-hour set, and in typical Of Montreal fashion, the show included people in white bodysuits crowd surfing, white puppets, various psychedelic images flashing on screens, and the guitarist jumping into the incredibly enthusiastic crowd.

The encore was a twenty-minute mashup of some favorites off Skeletal Lamping, and Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer, which as I heard many saying upon exit, made the entire show worthwhile.

Barnes said he was excited to do it again tonight (3/31), but this time with Loney Dear and Kishi Bashi opening (the same openers from Chicago).

Pictures of Friday night's openers are coming later, but here are some of the headliner. More, shot of the setlist included, below...

Sorry but the words Computer Magic and Got the Audience Pumped should NEVER be used together as that shit would never happen!!!

Ugh, I thought people were over this shitty overindulgent act. I can't decide which is worse, this or Sufjan Stevens.

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2012 8:28 PM

Is that possibly the worst haircut ever?

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2012 8:34 PM

This is the gay man's sufjan stevens.

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2012 8:37 PM

This is garbage, is what it is

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2012 8:54 PM

What is garbage in here? The haircut? Disagree.

knew these guys 10 years ago in athens. self obsessed and self important then. I can't understand what kind of person this music is for. it's embarrassing.

on the other hand, elf power was and remains the best band of the late 90s athens music scene and just a killer psych rock band overall.

These guys need some Linbrain surgery for their fat heads.

were Kickball Katy's huge luscious redhead tits at this show?

Hard to believe Hard Nips got anyone pumped. One of the worst NYC bands ever. How'd they get on this show? AZN bro in Of Montreal? Gifts of drugs? BJs? Def by pulling favors, no one likes them!

This show is EXACTLY what's wrong with music in this town. Mad arrogant talentless people patting themselves on their H&M-clothed backs. All the old school dudes in Athens HATE these guys with a passion, and with good reason: they are only popular due to milking their appearance/sexuality.

Posted by Anonymous | April 1, 2012 6:19 AM

Shouldn't that food cart be Outback branded? How'd that get there WTF

Posted by Anonymous | April 1, 2012 6:23 AM

Kevin Barnes is not 'gay' - he is special. He is actually married to one of the ladies in the band.

Saw these dudes twice. Opened up for the Thrills at Maxwells in 2004, then when MGMT opened for them in 2005. Had fun, but it's time to hang em' up.

ugly people

I saw them last week in Chicago and they sounded amazing, better than I'd ever heard them play. Personally, I think Kevin Barnes is a pop genius.

Posted by Josh | April 1, 2012 2:07 PM

^^^ helps to be a pop genius to write at least one good song besides an Outback commercial.

i never read such pretentious, douche bag-y comments. I literally hate everyone who left a comment except for Josh. You the man Josh! Gay flaming lips, you can lick my bag.

Posted by EMELIE | April 1, 2012 11:21 PM

I thought it was a pretty great show, personally...sometimes I wish BV would disable comments, it's the same ten angry nerds trash talking every band they post about.

Posted by me | April 1, 2012 11:53 PM

most of you commenters are such fucking trash: go do something with your time
i kinda hate this blog because of you bitches
but i talked with the photographer at the show and so wanted to see what he took...
thanks for the photos.

for the rest of us
this show was AMAZING
it's the most i've ever seen NYC crowds dance at a rock show
if anyone recorded this night
i'd love a copy
i got a ticket at face outside after the show and went the next night
which wasn't nearly as good...
but they are a band i would see over and over

i made a mash-up video that gives a feel for the show
i left it in my URL comment thing but you can find it on youtube by searching the obvious

Do food carts offer hummus?

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2012 6:33 PM

all the haters who judge of montreal because of the theatrics and glitter and glam and pop should just go read the lyrics.
if you don't recognize genius lyrics then go listen to your nickelback and creed.
you obviously can't appreciate something that you can't understand.
so go get your pitchforks and torches and wait for dem' aliens to come down from the sky so you can show em' what 'umericah's all about.

Posted by velvet bubbles | April 10, 2012 2:10 AM

no YOU go listen to nickelback and creed!

Posted by Anonymous | April 10, 2012 1:32 PM
